Went here twice because the first time it was taking part in the food and beer tour provided by the company of radius tours of Munich and the second time my mom and I went to eat alone since we liked it so much. I would say both times I was not disappointed. The food is great in quality and prepared freshly and carefully. The servers are kind and funny. The experience is worth the time as well. Food was okay! It was two of us dining and we ordered still water. They brought two bottles despite us ordering one. We didn't drink it and they refused to take it back even though it was unopened and we didn't order it. The manager literally wouldn't even listen to us. It cost 7 euro. He was extremely rude and continue to wave his hands without listening. Additionally, before all this there was a fight amongst staff that led to glasses being broken at the bar. We only experienced some beers and an appetizer of meats, cheeses, spreads, pickles, and salads (the name of the dish escapes me, sorry). The meats and cheeses were plentiful and delicious. The cheese spread (Obatzda) was the best of our trip - rich, tangy, and full of flavor - perfectly paired with the large, soft pretzels. The interactions with the server were minimal but it is often the culture. Based on the one dish and our beer, we enjoyed the cozy, laid-back atmosphere and would probably come back again. read more

Terrible, rude service. They do not like non-Germans here. Food was ok but we were treated like crap here. We were chased away from the first table we tried to sit at and then we're ignored. My wife asked for a second cup of tea and the waiter made some bs excuse about their computer system. Never got the check so I had to go inside to pay. Needless to say, no tip was given. It's too bad as the food was ok. Avoid this place if you are a foreigner. There are far better places to spend your money. read more

Typical Bavarian locale. I have been twice since it's near my hotel. I'm traveling alone so it's easier to find a seat, the place is always busy! Don't be surprised if you have to wait, if you have a larger group. This is a favorite for locals, as well as tourists. They serve Hacker Pschorr beer. It's a good, long standing Munich beer. The first time I went I had the Wildgulasch (deer meat) with Semmel Knödel and it was fantastic! Nice hardy meal on a cold winter night. Second visit I had the special: Zanderfilet v. grill, Blatt Spinat und Salzkartoffel mit Mandel Butter (grilled pike-perch, sautéed spinach and salt potatoes w/almond butter). It's one of the best meals I've had on this trip! I always drink the Dunkle Bier (dark beer) but they have a variety along with beer mixes (Radler, Russe, Cola Weizen). read more

Not a great German experience. Came here as cute location and was busy. Took waitress 10 minutes to even greet me then another 10 for her to bring the table beside me their drinks but she'd forgotten mine (i ordered the same time as them) she then says 5 more minutes at which time i said I'd have to go and I'm happy to pay but need to leave to get to a store as didn't realize they're closed tomorrow. Waitress got mad at this. Then made me pay full bill (fair enough as I'd ordered food so i get that) however then when we went inside so i could pay and i asked for my drink at least to quickly drink, it wasn't even made/ after standing there for 5 mins waiting for them to make it and no one doing so i just left. read more

Chose this place based on location and outdoor seating. Beyond that, there was nothing else to get excited about. It is Munich, so of course the beer will be good as it is in every other place. A lovely German/Bavarian themed restaurant, the food was authentic and service was quick and friendly... Try the kaiserschmarrn desert, but share as the portion is big enough for two :)) This is the place to visit, at least once, if you are in Münich. read more

3.5 stars. We came here to give my visiting brother a flavor of Munich cuisine. Altes Hackerhaus maintains its old rustic Bavarian charm such that on their English menu, they even claim themselves to be a landmark of Munich. On a Friday night (9:30 PM), the place was still very crowded (and it is not a small restaurant). We waited about 15 minutes before we got a table. Service was (understandably) hasty and impersonal, but we also got our drinks and food quickly. And no complaints about the Hacker-Pschorr beers (one of my favorite Munich beers) or the food (Rahmschwammerl, Maultaschen, Nürnberger Rostbratwürste, and Kaiserschmarrn to finish). I was on a mission to eat some white asparagus on my last night in Munich. I ended up in this place because it was listed in my guidebook and I was over being the only person out in the streets during heavy rain. I got the asparagus and potato dish. It was good. White asparagus is generally very pricey and I would say this was on the less expensive end of things. The service was good as well read more

I stopped in here for dinner tonight. They had a nice small beer garden in the back. The bread was good and potato salad. I ordered the wrong sausage and it wasn't good but I am sure the food is good here. That was my fault. The beer of course was very good. read more

Rude, uncaring, and overall bad service. Waiter seemed friendly at first but when we asked for the check, he said he'd help us out once he helped another customer and he just walked right past us. We waited 30 minutes for him to come back around and but he just kept avoiding eye contact. Eventually we went into the restaurant from the sidewalk seating and asked to pay. The brewery "Prew im Haggenviertel" which has been renamed several times and currently known as "Hackery Brewery" has been being making beer on this site since the 15th century however the building was destroyed by fire in 1825, rebuild in 1831 and fully renovated in 1985. It still has some old world charm and is heavily visited by locals. Just a quick note - don't assume the staff here knows English because a lot of them do not or don't wish to speak it. If you come here, be prepared to try and speak a little bit of German else I am not sure what type of experience you will have! If you want a staff that you will be 100% sure speaks some English this is not the place for you! Our experience was fine and it was worth the visit to feel immersed in the German culture. I arrived with a German speaking party of 6 on a Thursday night (what would have been Thanksgiving eve in the states). We had called ahead for reservations and we were promptly seated. Food: 3 stars. First, I must admit that I am not a huge fan of German food. Second, I have to say that each entree was huge.. even for US standards! The food here is authentic German so you had better like meat and a lot of it. If you do, this may be a 4-5 star experience for you. Boiled brisket of beef with horse-radish (S) and boiled potatoes - 3 stars - Beef was cooked good and horse-radish was essential as without the horse-radish this dish would have been really bland. Crisp-roasted suckling pig, in dark beer sauce with potato dumpling and cabbage salad with bacon - 3 stars - good but not great. The sauce and potato dumpling was the star of the dish. Bavarian apple strudel - 3.5 stars - I thought this dish was flavorful. The apples were cooked just right and the cream sauce was a good complement to the apples. Beer: 4 stars - Hacker-Pschorr Leichte Weisse was a really good beer! Service: 4 stars - service was good but remember we were speaking German. Ambiance: 5 stars - Warm and inviting decor. Lots of wood and iron, guns and antlers. Lighting was perfect, not too bright and not too dim. Tons of locals. We heard nothing but German spoke around us. Noise level was moderate. Attire: This restaurant is pretty casual. I wore jeans, a sweater and calf high boots $: I would say this place is a good value. You get a lot of food for the price. read more

Traditional place in the heart of Munich - and the former original building of the Hacker brewery (now part of Hacker Pschorr). I have been there on a business dinner, taking out some non locals to a Bavarian location. The portions were gigantic, the food was traditional, the service was good. Our first night in Munich after a long and delayed flight we wanted to start the trip right with the right mood for the German trip. Altes hackerhaus. Saw they had seating and looked fun so we went right on in. The open space is of course just like a beer hall. Plenty of people drinking and eating. Our Dirndl wearing server was jovial and sat us at a nice table along the window. We went for the beer of course plus the assortment of sausages and schnitzel. The portions were large as in the Schnitzel could easily feed two people. Thankfully, we were sharing. The beer was cold the food was good from that I know and everyone was friendly. Seemed like a great start to the trip! Of course we had to end the meal with apple strudel with warm vanilla sauce...of course we do. Thankfully, I'm on vacation and plenty of walking they days ahead to the calories where okay right? We enjoyed the meal. It was hearty and comforting on a cold Munich night.
