Delicious wings and pizza. My parents used to go here all the time when they would visit me at college.

Huge portions of excellent food. The pizza we had was covered in toppings with tasty cheese and large slices. The wings were hot and spicy and there was a lot of blue cheese dressing and celery to go with it. This place is a local favorite with families coming back each week. First time in Clinton NY and someone in town suggested us to try Alteri's. A very big mistake. We regrated big time the time and money we wasted in that Outdated restaurant. We felt that we were in the seventies. But that was just the least of our disappointment. The food was SO Bad and tasteless , beers we got on the tap were so flat, chicken was undercooked. WORST .., literally.... Worst service EVER. We didn't even get a chance to sit down yet. The woman running the podium (Sherry) should not be dealing with people. Absolutely running around like a chicken with her head cut off. Rude to customers, even more rude to the poor woman behind the bar. Barking orders to everyone, barely calling out names to people who are waiting for tables, mumbled the name once, then mumbled a second time, and before the name was out of her mouth the second time, said "going twice...", and then said, forget it & went on to the next people (group of 4). The bar area was busy, which is where people have to stand, so it's difficult to hear. We were told that a table would take about 20 minutes. We stood there for 50, (our choice), and watched obvious locals come in (they chatted up other folks there, as well as bartenders who seemed very friendly and sweet), and be seated ahead of us. We watched a couple come in. Stand there literally for seven minutes after chatting and be seated. Saw their name be put on the list in front of ours. I questioned, then was told they had a "reservation on the phone". Suddenly. NO apologies or even updates, zero. They don't care. It's a revolving door, and if you're lucky enough to get in when the door is spinning around, then good for you. It wasn't even busy when we walked in and thought we were lucky. It turned into a madhouse about 10 minutes later. Our name was on the list in the third spot when we walked in. A group of three people ahead of us, and another pair. No one else. How that turned into us standing there for 50 minutes watching couple after couple be seated, I have no idea. Had nothing to do with reservations. As we turned around after waiting PATIENTLY that long, obviously upset, we got a sarcastic "have a nice day". This is how they treat people who are obviously new to the area and not local. New faces. My jaw is literally still on the ground. DON'T bother ... i'm sure there are many other wonderful food establishments and restaurants who deserve - and will APPRECIATE - your business. read more

I dont know why this place has only 3 stars average. The food here is solid. The pizza here is solid. and the service is also solid. So that being said...Defintely come here and order their pizza. Their plain cheese and the sausage hot peppers ones were good ( spicy but good). The sauce is that dark, thick kind and the cheese is browned on top of a crispy round crust. Alteri's celebrated its 70th anniversary last year and we've been loyal customers for the last fifty. Not living in the village of Clinton, or surrounding neighborhoods, we drive 50 minutes each way to dine there several times a year. We made the trip last night and were disappointed for the first time. Our server Sherry (sp?) was excellent but the the food seemed lacking especially for the prices. A small piece of lasagna only was offered as a special entree. No salad or vegetables accompanied it for $24. A side salad was ordered for $7.00 which was a small bowl of lettuce and two tiny tomato wedges. The flavor of the lasagna was tasty but nothing special. Sadly, a long time family favorite, now mediocre at best, seems to be going downhill. read more

We've eaten here many times and the last few meals have gone downhill. After last night (valentines day) we will not eat here again. Party of 4, my wife cut ziti (1/2 order) with sauce, I had pizza the other couple had a chicken cutlet dish and spaghetti (1/2 order) . Pretty simple basic meals. Two wines and Two waters and one coffee. Also one large anti-pasta salad for the table with garlic bread. Yes, they were busy but food took over 30 minutes to get. We can overlook that because it was busy in there. I ordered pizza and sausage, crispy and it came with pepperoni instead. When i order crispy, its not uncommon to get pizza burned instead and I take that risk everywhere. This was burned a little bit. Very tasty and hot, but I really wanted sausage. I did not send it back - did not want to wait another half an hour and have end up eating out of sync with my wife and guests eating their food. The pasts dishes were served luke warm - obviously they were sitting out for a while. The chicken dish was described as "ok" by our friend. They served white wine instead of red, and fixed that mistake. As usual it was cold in the dining room - but since it's always cold there, I wore extra clothing. Don't get me wrong, it's not freezing or anything and some people like it on the cold side. We were seated near a back exit door that had a blanket stuffed under it to stop the cold air. The bill came to $92.39 By the way the two pasta dishes were 1/2 orders only. I've had great pizzas there and the salads are awesome. On a normal night you might catch a decent meal there, but I'd stick with pizza and avoid anything else. Nice people - great location. We left a $20 tip anyway, but will never go back. Having lived in New York City for 20 years, I have tasted pretty much every kind of pizza. That said, no pie in New York State compares to Alteri's Sausage & Peppers pizza. The best pizza around and this historic landmark of a restaurant offers many more solid Italian favorites including homemade pastas and dinners. Very cozy and friendly atmosphere. Enjoy the hockey decor and history. Fran Alteri, the owner, really knows how to take care of his patrons. Great service. Great food. The best people. First time tonight and won't be returning. Was excited about homemade pasta, we all decided to order it only to find out then they were all out. Ok...start over......my husband orders the seafood platter, $19.99 mind you, I ordered shells and meatballs and our son got veggie ravioli, $14.99. Seafood platter included one piece of fish four scallops and three shrimp, some soggy fries and dry Cole slaw.....definitely not worth the money! Food isn't awful, but unfortunately that is the best part of the restaurant. Service is extremely slow and the waitstaff is inattentive and dull. Me and two friends waited nearly an hour for two orders of wings and one entree. All in all this is great restaurant if you're over 70 and don't mind waiting for 2.5 hours for mediocre food. Our dining experience at Alteri's was a harrowing and painstakingly slow ordeal. The food is not all that, average at best. The fries tasted as if they came from the local Hannaford's. The fish and wings were mediocre and lacking in flavor. They did not have a complete suite of condiments at their disposal. The wait staff was dull and unattentive. They took forever to take our orders and bring us our food. The entire trip took well over two hours when it could have been completed in under half an hour. We politely asked for our food several times, but the wait staff refused to listen to our requests. I would rather hear the death rattle of my only child than step back into Alteri's. read more

Stopped for lunch on a Saturday, with my family, which included a 6-year-old and a 3-year-old. It wasn't busy, yet we waited literally an hour between sitting down and eating. Kids split a small pizza, wife and mom each got a salad, I ordered a BLT. The server said the delay was that the pizza takes 25 minutes to cook (even though that doesn't explain the remaining 35 minutes). She also tried to give us someone else's order. The salads were good, and the kids seemed to enjoy the pizza (which seemed a little over cooked to me). My BLT was not great - literally 3 strips of bacon. It would've been fine, otherwise. So, bottom line: Food was adequate, service not so much. With all the excellent restaurants in the area, I don't see eating here again. read more

I do not understand why anyone would write a review that is anything but 5 stars. This place is a legend in the area and rightly so. Their food is all home made from scratch, their pizza takes a while to cook since they are making each one from scratch. If anyone does not like their food, it is because they are too used to having processed Italian. This place is the real deal. I absolutely LOVE the wings and pizza here. The blue cheese isn't great, but the wings make up for it. Service is OK when it's not ridiculously busy. Fair warning - this place is always full of locals, and everyone knows everyone. This can sometimes slow things up a bit, but the wings and pizza are totally worth the wait. Honestly one of my least favorite restaurants ever. The only thing keeping this place going is loyalty for a family owner restaurant in a small town. I've been on multiple occasions and each time have disappointed with the food and service. The homemade gnocchi... nothing to write home about. Chicken dinner... came with either canned or frozen vegetables and the chicken had no flavor and was dry. Fish fry... nothing special served with underdone fries that tasted frozen. People are willing to pay for good, quality, small business owned food. I just wish Alteri's gave us that. read more

Staff was very attentive. The pizza looked good but hard to believe it's the best pizza in this area. Not sure I believe that. Odd that it's all the reviews really rave about. I tried the flowers pasta and it was alright. The sauce is pretty good. I'd get it again. My boyfriend had a chicken parm sandwich and he wasn't super impressed. I'd say the best part about the meal was honestly the sauce. Other than that, eh not so impressed. As a "local" since 1998 this place has never impressed me. The pizza is not impressive at all although many real locals (family from Clinton for at least 50 plus years), love it. The pasta, salad, etc. also nothing to get excited about. I did come in for lunch one day and had an egg salad sandwich (served on white bread) that tasted delicious. It does often have a local crowd at the bar on friday evenings which can be fun. read more

Hands down, best pizza in the area, with a recipe that's been around since the 1950's. Nice, hard-working staff too. The drawbacks are that the decor in Alteri's needs updating - very dark and somewhat dank even though they have a very large dining room. We usually order the pizza to go, or eat at the bar. Horrible food and horrible service; the head waiter told us it would be a 15 minute wait and we waited 40 minutes to be seated! Once we were seated, it took almost an hour for our food to come! The waitresses wouldn't make eye contact with us or fill up our water pitchers unless we asked multiple times. I ordered the lasagna and it was terrible. What came out of the kitchen was wet noodles microwaved in a ketchup-tomatoey sauce. I will never be coming back to Alteri's and I strongly recommend that you take your business elsewhere. read more

Came in from out of town on our way to the funeral parlor. I don't know why it is listed as pizza place, they have much more. It is a nice family neighbor restaurant. Great ambiance, clean and helpful staff. Also said not good for groups??? They were setting up for a retirement party. Granted you couldn't have a large group but for 20-25 I think it is fine. Now to the food, I had a turkey sandwich (on a great crispy roll) with Homemade cream of broccoli soup, my husband had a large order of wings, sister in law had homemade cream of broccoli soup with grilled cheese, and my brother in law had a deluxe hamburger. We ordered two pieces of cheese cake which the waitress said were small but we all had at least two fork full which was enough for everyone. Everything was great.
