I was desperately looking for a last minute alteration for a bridesmaid dress before getting on a plane the next night for a wedding. The first seamstress completely missed different areas on the dress. I had a friend pick it up for me and I didn't realize until the night before my trip... YIKES I was in the midst of leaving a very tearful voicemail at Simply Barbara after hours (around 9pm) hoping for a call back the next day when instead, someone picked up the phone. I explained the situation through tears and Barbara helped calm me on the phone and told me she was still in the shop working on her daughter's wedding gown, but if I could come now she would see what she could do. I arrived sometime around 9:30pm. Barbara was so patient and comforting and did the alterations that night while I sat on the floor watching her and sharing stories about our lives. When it came time to pay, I was ready to pay any amount because that's what she deserved. Instead, she charged me even less than the first seamstress. I will never forget her kindness. I came in and I mentioned to her what areas didn't fit me properly and she said she could work with the dress. Afterwards she began to hang up my dress so I mentioned to her shouldn't I try it on so you can pin it etc. Then she said oh yes try it on. I tried on my dress and she was on the phone for a few minutes talking to a customer and left me waiting and seemed very distracted, this stressed me out because the first 15 minutes of the consultation are free, but after 15 minutes she charges you $15 per every 15 minutes so I didn't want to get over charged. Anyways she comes back and starts pinning my dress which was okay. When it came to the back part of my dress it was a little tight on me and I asked her can we fix the back, and she goes on to respond in a very rude manner what did I tell you when you walked in. I was really thrown off by her response, I actually own a small business and I would never talk to customers this way. I responded and said I don't know much about tailoring or wedding dresses so I may have the same questions more than once, I hope that's okay. She responded and said it's not about tailoring etc it's just that I know if I can work with something or not. I then said well again like I mentioned I don't know anything about tailoring so I hope I could ask the same questions more than once and that be okay, she then said it was okay if I did. However this interaction left me feeling very uncomfortable and like I was being talked down too. Wedding planning is already stressful and a lot for most people and all I was expecting was some kindness and respect which I did not get here.

Not 5 minutes after I put it on, my puppy jumped up on me to play, and ended up biting a hole right in the middle of my chest. THIS IS WHY I CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!!! In addition to just being bummed about what happened, I am also heading to the mountains to ski tomorrow, and was planning on getting a lot of use out of my new sweater. Jeanne responded to a post I made on Facebook, looking for someone who might be able to fix the hole. I dropped the sweater to her asking if there was any way I could possibly get it fixed same-day. If you've ever gotten fitted for a bridesmaids dress, you know it can be kind of an adventure. The…read morebride may or may not have seen wedding photos in The Knot in which all the girls look fantastic in clingy yellow silk. (It's *her* day. It's *her* day.) The sizes don't match up with mall sizes. You can end up feeling (A) like a heifer and (B) like the bridal shop is trying to make money on future alterations. You're not a heifer, but the bridal shop, with its in-house alterations services, certainly stands to benefit by being generous with their measurements. (And to be fair, I'm sure it's common for people to be on Day One of South Beach and feeling good when they get measured and be up 10 lbs. when the dress comes in and the shop may be hedging its bets, but...) That's where an independent, competent tailor comes in. Based on a positive recommendation from a co-bridesmaid, I went to Astgik's with another friend in the same wedding. I lucked out; my dress required only a strap shortening ($25). My friend's dress was a different story (like, she and I could have hung out in her dress together). Yes, the alterations cost almost as much as the dress, but as-ordered, my friend was wearing a navy satin garbage bag. Once Astgik was done, it was a dress. It took a few weeks (even for mine), but they were done when promised. I don't know if I'd gone in by myself if the strap-shortening would have been done faster, but this was just before Christmas/New Year's and I'm sure my friend's dress took a lot of work. Astgik is friendly and funny and the price seems reasonable for the quality of work. I will go back for future bridesmaids dresses and dress pant-shortening, dress/skirt altering, etc.

I had the unfortunate experience of using this dry cleaners for alternations. I had a lot of…read moreclothing items that needed to be altered and was able to show their seamstress which areas needed work. This was a large order costing me around $350 which to my surprise upon picking my order a month and a half later, found the quality of the alterations to be below subpar. There was one item of clothing that wasn't even altered which was incredibly frustrating because we carefully went over all the areas that required attention in great detail. When I attempted to tried to address my dissatisfaction, I was quickly told that they "did make alterations", yet were unable to show me exactly where. I explained that I have tried the clothing on after the job was done only to find that they did not fit. Seeing that I was disappointed, they only offered to fix one clothing item and disregarding the other items. They never bothered to offer to redo the job at free cost, instead expecting for me to pay even more money for a job that they did not met. I'm sure their dry cleaning services are great but their alternation services are below standard. I will not be using them at any point in the future. 1/10 would not recommend.
