It's was FREEZING today, so I though it was time to finally wear my brand new, super-soft, not-particularly-inexpensive sweater. Not 5 minutes after I put it on, my puppy jumped up on me to play, and ended up biting a hole right in the middle of my chest. THIS IS WHY I CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!!! In addition to just being bummed about what happened, I am also heading to the mountains to ski tomorrow, and was planning on getting a lot of use out of my new sweater. Jeanne responded to a post I made on Facebook, looking for someone who might be able to fix the hole. I dropped the sweater to her asking if there was any way I could possibly get it fixed same-day. I had the sweater back in less than 2 hours, and unless you're looking for it, I really don't think you can notice the repair. Price was reasonable, especially considering the quick turnaround. Looking pulled together and chic has a lot to do with proper fit. I have been going to see Jeanne at A Stitch In Time for years. She and her assistant are great at alterations. Jeanne takes the time to make sure your clothes fit as they should. She is also a pleasure to work with. Don't cheap out on your look. Go get your clothes fitted properly! read more

For my 100th review, I wanted to wait until a 5-star establishment came along. But for some reason, I keep going to places that have some major flaws. So, I'm just going to bite the bullet and do this review. I hate to give this place 3 stars because Jeanne seems to be very nice. But I agree with other reviewers that if you've got something kind of complex (e.g. a prom dress), then you want someone who is extremely detail-oriented and careful, which is what Jeanne seems to be, so going here is fine. But if you want simpler alterations, then this might not be your best choice. In terms of the work done, it's good. I brought several pieces for her to alter, and the work was done when she said it would be done. But for a simple pair of brand-new pants (not dress pants) to have the hem shortened for $17? And it's not like I was asking for anything complex. Maybe that's not fair criticism because maybe other tailors charge $17 for such an alteration. But considering that I paid $20 for the pants, to then pay $17 for the alteration seems expensive. My other main criticism about this place are the hours. I agree with other reviewers who point out that the hours are limited. To be fair, she's a one-person operation, but the limited hours creates the situation that Anne S. described where backlogs create a situation where you have to pay a premium to get anything done here. Again, for complex alterations, this might be the place to go. But for simple alterations, go elsewhere. Where? I'm not sure, but there have to be other larger places with better hours in the area. read more

Jeanne created a beautiful christening gown for my son's baptism from my wedding dress. She was super helpful in navigating the process from pattern and notions thru the measurements and fitting. I really appreciated her working with me to enhance the gown in certain ways to customize it and/or incorporate features from my dress that the pattern wouldn't have otherwise accommodated. She was patient and meticulous in ensuring that all fit a growing baby and the end result was breathtaking. A family heirloom in the making! I was able to display his gown after the baptism and all in attendance were in awe of the craftsmanship. read more

The first time that I saw Jeanne, I needed to get measured for a bridesmaids dress. According to my measurements, I should have ordered a 6. Jeanne told me that I should order a 4- she had tailored enough of the designers' dresses to know what size I actually needed. The dress arrived, and the 4 fit perfectly! She kept me from having to pay to take the dress in! I have since seen Jeanne to do the hem on 3 Bridesmaids dresses and take one of them in. Every dress was tailored perfectly, and completed on time- the most recent dress was able to be completed in a week. read more

This was my second time having Jeanne tailor a dress for me. The first time around was for a friend's wedding and I just needed a little taken in, in which she did a great job. However, this time around I needed a dress taken in and train removed within 2 weeks of my boyfriend's sister's wedding. Jeanne was not only warm, kind, and understanding but extremely professional and timely as well. I picked the dress up the day before the wedding (now that's putting a lot of trust into someone) and the outcome was phenomenal. The fit was absolutely perfect and the amount of compliments I got on the dress at the wedding is all thanks to Jeanne. Highly recommend!! read more

Jeanne also alters men's clothing, and more importantly, does a damn good job. I've used the same Italian tailor in Providence, RI most of my life (I'm 41) and he has since retired. My wife has used Jeanne in the past on dresses, etc., so I went down there with a few pairs of pants and she did a great job. Jeanne has since tailored dress shirts, dress pants, casual pants / khakis, jeans, shorts, etc. for me -- all great work. And now everything FITS like it should. So, if you're like me and you really can't buy "off the rack" and have it fit properly, make an appointment with Jeanne and she'll set it straight. Prices are reasonable and in line with the industry, but cash or check only (which is OK by me for small businesses - I get it). Besides, many of the manual "trades" (tailoring, hair cutting, shoe repair, etc.) are lost arts. It's nice to find someone who knows what they're doing. Thanks Jeanne. read more

Take your simple alterations elsewhere. Nothing special here. I called this tailor before I came in, and good thing I did because she was finishing her last client, then closing up for two weeks. She wasn't very pleasant...asked me if I had to try it on. Well, yes. You think? I explained I just need a simple hem on a simple maxi dress. She is closing up for 2-weeks and told me she couldn't get to it until at least when she returns because she has a backlog. This place is hardly ever open, they close everyday at 5. So if you work in Boston our out of town and can't get to it before 5 you are SOL. And frankly, if she is that back-logged she has plenty of work which means she is going to charge an arm and a leg. Take your business elsewhere. Tailors are a dime a dozen, especially for simple alterations!!! read more

I went here to get some bridesmaid's dresses aletered this summer. Jeanne was FANTASTIC- she did a marvelous job on the first dress, and was completely honest with me about the second dress. She said that although it was a bit long, it looked fine the way it was, and that there was no need to spend money on alterations. Can't beat that kind of honesty!! read more

Jeanne is fabulous! I went to see her last year after a bit of internet research for a good tailor on the south shore - she gets great reviews! I brought her a bridesmaid dress that was too big and had awkward straps, and she took it in and fixed the straps for me. I was very pleased, and so when it came time for me to get my own wedding dress, I called her up for my measurements. She doesn't usually alter wedding gowns, but because my dress was just a simple silk chiffon, she said she would hem it for me once it arrived from the designer. My only negative experience was that about a week before she promised me my dress would be ready, she called and said she wasn't sure when she had promised to have it ready, and that she was going to be away on vacation, and therefore I wouldn't get it back until almost 4 weeks later than expected. Being the laid-back bride that I was, I said no problem, because I had left plenty of time before the wedding, and i felt pretty confident about Jeanne. I got my dress back in plenty of time, and it fit fabulously - she even sewed my corset into the dress for me while I waited :) She also recently started taking in monogram orders, which means I will be giving her even more business! I was very impressed by this place and highly recommend it to others. Two weeks before a wedding (where I am a bridesmaid), I realized I had not altered my bridesmaid dress yet. This is a very complex dress - 4 layers including a 10" train - and it looked like a potato sack on me in the beginning. I needed the dress alterations turned around in one week. I went to A Stitch in Time and everything came out perfectly. She fit the bridesmaid dress to me like a glove (on the first try) and it was ready for pick up one week later. The alterations cost me $135, but it's because the dress is difficult to alter. She also offered me an option to make the long dress into a cocktail dress post-wedding. I think I will likely take her up on that as she is very talented and will make the dress useful outside of the event. Long story short - don't skimp on alterations. Get your bridesmaid dress altered here and she will make the dress look beautiful on you. read more
