The worst part is that, unlike most dressmakers/tailors, she will not give a price for an item if it's more than a hem. And then, worse yet, if you get an estimate, she doesn't abide by it all. One day it was $25 to fix a shirt and I declined. I subsequently changed my mind and took it back, then it was $30. When I picked it up, it was $35!! Plus she removes tags when I told her not to and she throws away extra material that I asked her to keep. Last visit, she totally damaged one of dresses. I'm done with this dishonest business. The second dress for the same occasion but the material was a silky texture. She suggested a change for the front portion of the collar. Her input was appreciated. I had lost weight and with the suggestion she made was something I would never thought was possible. I went to pickup the dresses. I was nervous, not sure that it would fit well. I was extremely excited when I tried on the first lace dress. She adjusted the zipper that I had trouble closing. It closed without any problem. The length of the dress was perfection. She is a true professional. The second silky dress was unbelievable. The front collar was very subtle and classic, exactly my style of dressing. Irene made me and my husband very comfortable. Her business is extremely busy nevertheless Irene made me feel like a priority. Here staff is efficient and everyone is greeted immediately and helped with their specific needs. I was referred to her from the salesperson who assisted me with my purchase of my dress. So off I drive on this Saturday night, having a strange familiar feeling. You see I've never been a wealthy fellow but back around 2009, I bought an expensive suit - to me it was expensive - at $800.00. As I pull up to Westfield Tailers, it hit me. This was the place I bought that expensive suit from a little Italian Wizard of a tailor. Not long after, I got in a tough car accident - suit was drenched in blood and lost to the ages. So tonight I walk into this same shop but now an older black gentleman comes out. At first he was a tad cranky and it had been a long day and he convinced me to return Sunday morning. But then we started talking like we'd known each other forever. He about his beloved Trinidad and his business paths to this shop and his son and more. Now I read the Yelp reviews and some were harsh - complaining he didn't do work on time. Well let me tell you: I showed up at 9:50 am on this sterling yellow Sunday morning and not two minutes later did he unlock the door. As cheery a greeting as I've had in some time: "I wouldn't want to let you down! It's all done - I just have to iron it!" So back we went to the spacious back work area filled with top of the line Juki sewing machines and various pieces of clothing he was working on. And there we stood, two fellows, one of Danish stock, one of Trinidadian, talking like brothers of some familiar kind - both seeing the world from the same empathetic lens. And as I left, freshly pressed suit in hand, he said generously that I'd made him feel the best he's felt all week. Too kind he was and I reminded him later that Sunday, the best was yet to come - time with his son. Tailors are a million dollars a dozen - the good ones. Mr. Thomas Charles is one of the good ones. And when put on this new suit tomorrow, I'll look all the better for the love and care put into its tailoring.

After visiting a couple shops nearby I looked up local tailors via the ol' Yelp app and Cranford Custom Tailors showed up a couple blocks away. I visited them and expected them to make me wait a while or even days to get the bag fixed. However, the staff was super friendly and kind, taking my bag and fixing it in minutes! They only charged a few bucks and I was on my way in under 10 minutes. The shop itself is not huge, but it has rooms for you to try your clothes on and there were tons of suits and clothes hanging around waiting for pick up, so clearly this business is well regarded. This makes me feel very good about coming back for my future tailoring needs.
