We recently visited Maria's Alterations to ask about hemming a dress and adjusting the sleeves. The…read moredress we brought was a simple black floor-length gown with a slit--something that could easily be worn to prom, as a bridesmaid dress, or to a cocktail event. Based on the shop's own description of handling "formalwear," we believed it would qualify. At the entrance, a sign stated the shop was by appointment only and for bridal and formalwear. Since we were already there, we stepped inside to confirm and possibly set up an appointment. Inside, the woman (presumably Maria) was sitting on her phone. She stood up when we walked in, and after we asked about the dress, her response was simply "no." There was no explanation, no apology, and no effort to help point us in a better direction. The interaction was short, dismissive, and left us feeling unwelcome. To be clear--the problem was not that the shop has limits on what it will alter. That is understandable. The problem was how it was handled. A professional response could have been as simple as, "I'm sorry, we only take bridal gowns, but you might try this other tailor." Instead, there was no kindness, no helpfulness, and no effort to provide good service. While older reviews may praise the quality of the work, our experience suggests customer service is lacking. If you are considering this shop for an important dress, especially something sentimental like a wedding gown or prom dress, think carefully before booking. Professionalism and respect are just as important as skill, and unfortunately, that was not what we experienced here.

She truly blew my expectations out of the water and then some. My dress fit perfectly on my wedding day and I felt amazing I forgot I even got it taken in. It was always so comfortable to go for a fitting and you can really trust Maria with your vision. And she is very honest and upfront about her pricing. I took a suit jacket to be tailored. Needed sleeves and torso/waist taken in. When looking at the…read morefit of the jacket, the tailor noticed that the cuff of the jacket has buttons that actually unbutton. The tailor said that the sleeves would have to be taken in from the shoulders and that it would cost $150 per sleeve and probably not worth doing it. I agreed and I left and went to another tailor. I was hoping that I would get a better price and this tailor was able to do it from the cuff and just move two buttons up to keep the look of the jacket. This leads me to believe that the tailor at Park Avenue Tailor is inexperienced. I will give three starts as this is just a review of the interaction and not of their work.

Long post but sooooo many levels of incompetence…read more I took a brand new pair of pants with tag still on. I stood there while both women talked to me. One of them pinned pants. We had a lengthy discussion in detail that I wanted the new hem to look exactly like the old one. One woman said she'd do it differently but I told them what I wanted. She said "yes it can be done" I reiterated "it's the style of the pants, and that's why I bought them and it could be done there was plenty of fabric and what I want". Both woman agreed it could be done. When I go to pick them up, they are done completely wrong. The hem I wanted to preserve was not done and the woman who did the work said the woman that pinned them didnt write down my instructions!! But the woman who altered them was part of the full discussion when they were hemmed! so she threw her colleague under the bus. Both of them were present and actively talking to me about the new hem and style I wanted to preserve. Both agreed it could be done. When I go to pick them up, they are not how I want it, it is how the first woman wanted it, and the second one blamed it on the first ones were not writing it down! Absolutely the worst Poor excuse, horrible Customer Sevice, I told him I didn't wanna come back. I would take a discount and just leave and they told me, " we can't give you a discount only the owner ." I suggested we call the owner and was told, "the Owner is in Greece." So these employees are not empowered to make a simple decision. What kind of Owner is doesn't empower employees to make simple decisions that might preserve a modicum of credibility, leaves them stranded and they do a FAILURE job - poor workmanship and oh by the way... Do not go there unless you want your clothes ruined. The kicker: I know how to sew and I know there was plenty of fabric and time to do it right. BTW, I used to own 6 dry cleaners so I know exactly what's going on there and it is not professional. Negative stats if I could!
