I tried this place out on a whim because it's in a great location. That's probably the biggest pro. They also have a nice selection of different brews. Now the cons.... The burger was $17 and had virtually no flavor. I wanted cheddar instead of American cheese, and was told they don't offer cheddar. Not a huge deal, but I would think cheddar cheese is common practice at a burger place. The drink was $8.50 and served in a small glass. For these prices I expected better quality and quantity. The outdoor tents looked fun. The server was great and attentive. I just don't think I'll be back given the prices. read more

I was really excited to come here based on the reviews and pictures. Unfortunately It wasn't all it's hyped up to be, at least for me. They have pictures as early as three months ago with menu items that they no longer have which was really disappointing because that's one of the reasons I wanted to eat there in the first place. I had the smash burger and my husband had the bang bang chicken. My burger was good and my husband enjoyed his sandwich, but I don't think we will go back. read more

We visited on a Monday night around 7pm. We were seated very quickly. Our waiter was very friendly and very quick. We had a few apps to start. All were our waiters suggestions. The crab cakes, The messy fries, And the pretzels. The pretzels I believe came with 3. They were about 4" in diameter. Tasty pretzels with a very good beer cheese to dip them in. The messy fries were decent. It's a pretty common app across the country. Nothing spectacular. The crab cakes weren't exactly crab cakes. They were more of a crab cake hush puppy. However. WOW. Those were fantastic. I'll say it now and again later. The crab cakes were the best thing I had. Top notch. As for my meal, I had the pork belly sliders. They were ok. I don't love the pretzel buns (personal preference.) The pork belly could have been cooked longer. Not quite enough of the fat had been rendered down yet. Pork belly can't be rushed. I had the hazey IPA to drink. Of all the IPA's I've had. I think it takes the cake for the best one. If I could get it where I live, I would drink it every day. It is really a good quality beer. Over all I give them 7/10. Service and beer were great. Food was just kinda normal other than the home run crab cakes. read more

Good-bring kids-very family oriented-good menus, average price food. We liked it. Lots of families with kids-plenty of seating inside and outside. Very cool igloos for private outdoor seating-plus a huge outdoor tent for outdoor covid safe seating. Can you call it yuppie? Yes and that's ok! Really neat. We went around 4 pm so lots of family with kids-maybe at night more younger crowd. Lost a star only because no baby changing table in any bathroom. Not cool. Otherwise go-we will be back. Good food and beer. read more

After driving by Alter Brewing too many times, my wife and I decided to give them a try for dinner on Sunday. Wow, pleasantly surprised by the menu and beer selections. We started with the Chili Garlic Shrimp, perfect for two people, delicious with a little kick. Entrees were the BLA Sandwich and Chicken Pesto Sandwich. Both were goooood, would order again. Suzy took care of us while we dined and drank. Ask for her when you go. I wanted to add a bit more. I had the opportunity to sample some beer before making a choice. I made a choice and it was a really great beer. Suzy, remember her? She suggested talking with her manger for a beer that would really compliment my sandwich selection. I went with their suggest and WOOOOOW, it made the meal. I also took home a six-pack and have been enjoying it immensely. If you're hungry you got give Alter Brewing a try! read more

Cool place. Really quiet on a Tuesday night. Everyone was super accommodating and nice here. Was able to peacefully have a nice meal. The beer is fine.... Nothing super amazing. The food was super delicious and easily outshines the beer here. read more

This was only our second time eating here, but the food, beer, and service were fantastic. The manager even took it upon himself to create an impromptu changing station for my son's diaper change since there wasn't a station in the Men's restroom. If they've got the apple pie skillet dessert, do it. read more

So glad I finally made it here! Outdoor space is amazing! Service was great! I can't wait to go back. read more

Alter Brewing + Kitchen - Delicious!!! Not a vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination but this plate caught my eye! - Brewpubs Near Me - Saint Charles, Illinois

Prime location right on the Fox River. Good beer and food. One of my favorite local get together spots.

Great brewery!! It was fairly busy when we went (on a Friday) but we got seated on the patio within an hour. The owner and employees were all very friendly. I would highly suggest the caprese melt!! Very good. read more

Alter Brewing + Kitchen - Heavy squeeze beer is the best! - Brewpubs Near Me - Saint Charles, Illinois

This is a beautiful restaurant in a great location. It is a new place so they all experience a rough patch here and there. We had some issues and the Manager Adam reached out to us right away to make things right. They just need some time to find their groove . Backend and front end both. Thank you Adam. read more

My husband & I went to Alter Brewing last Friday night. Was a short bike ride for us - we were hoping to eat outside but unfortunately there was a 45 minute wait for the outside patio (we didn't have a reservation). Drink 5/5- This was the first time trying Alter Brewing's beers - I tried the Hopular Kid APA - really enjoyed it! Crisp & fresh - would for sure order again. Food 5/5 - I had the Breaded Chicken Sandwich & my husband ordered the Steak Melt. The Bread Chicken Sandwich appeared pan fried which was delicious - definitely a must-get too if you enjoy capers & sun-dried tomatoes! My husband loved his Steak Melt, however unfortunately they did not have gluten free buns so he ate it without a bun. Allergen-Friendly 4/5 - The menu is marked with Gluten Free & Vegetarian items! However would have liked to see the availability of gluten free buns to pair with gluten-free menu options. Service 5/5 - Our waitress was fantastic! Attentive and very communicative. Took the time to check with the kitchen to inquire about gluten free buns. Atmosphere 3/5 - To be honest I didn't love the interior atmosphere. Felt too bright and large, I think I was hoping for a smaller, intimate brewery. However I would definitely go back to check out the patio! TL;DR - Delicious food and drink in a large brewery setting - lots of menu options to go around. The patio along the fox river looked beautiful - we will be back! read more

Service was decent, food was just okay, the real draw is the outdoor seating by the river.

This place is winning. Drinks are top notch, food is delicious (I would eat more of it right now but sadly I'm now home), Shannon our server was the bees knees! If you like things that are good go here and ask for Shannon's section. Enjoy read more

We found Alter Brewing after moving here and searching for a place like we loved back in our old hometown. We really enjoyed the appetizers and drinks, and our waitress was super friendly as well. We went right around 5:30 and it wasn't too crowded at all. We didn't have a wait, (we sat inside), our drinks were out in no time, and we generally enjoyed ourselves. I guess the one thing we were thrown off by is the brewery; we didn't see a dedicated menu, and there were only a few to choose from and not much variety of flavors. Other than that, it was a great experience. We will definitely be back. read more

Always a nice experience. Food is solid and I appreciate Robbie, thanks so much being a great dude. It makes my night to see ya tending bar. Cheers brotha. read more

Server maria was rude, rolled her eyes at our table, and had an overall shitty attitude! ‍ some people just shouldnt be in the service industry! read more

Man, I used to really love this place but the prices are going to keep me from coming back. Killer location and wonderful afternoon/evening shade along the river, but $19 for a burger?! C'mon. It wasn't even a good burger, either. My friend and I both ordered one and were quite disappointed in the taste - mostly charred. The fries and beer are always good, but I can get a great burger somewhere else for a lot less. I'm guessing they would justify their prices as keeping up with inflation, but let's be honest...nobody else has a $19 burger. read more

Love love love this place. The beer is the best I've ever tasted with a wide variety to choose from. The menu has bar food and healthy options. The food was delicious as well. You can't go wrong. Staff was clean, prompt and friendly. Decor and vibes on spot! read more

Great food, great beer and exceptional service. We stopped in looking for a birthday meal for our new 21 year old. Ariel, our waitress was awesome. Friendly and attentive. Good service like that is hard to find these days. The food from the fondu to the burgers were great. Grilled cheese bites are worth a try too. Definitely will be back. read more

Great service and beer selection. Modern open seating. We sat outside with a great view of the River.

Good smash burgers but can be expensive. Sitting outside is nice by the river & people watching is always fun. read more

Ambiance a bit loud. Food was average pub food, as we compare against More brewing in Bartlett. Beer selections a bit lacking in originality and flavor. In summary, not bad, but not enough to return. read more

The atmosphere was great. Next time we're definitely bringing a group so we can go in the igloos! All the food was delicious, but we didn't think the apple cobbler was much of a cobbler. It was 99% thinly sliced apple with the skin still on. Some people may love it that way, but I was not a fan. All in all I will definitely be coming back. read more

Great atmosphere and great beer. Recommend sitting in the outdoor encasements if possible! I had the BLA sandwich (bacon apple). Great sauce and it compliments the Smokey bacon very well. Wish there was more apple. The sandwich was missing some sweetness from the apple to compliment the bitter arugula. Still a fantastic sandwich, I recommend it! read more

We had our rehearsal dinner here in the restaurant's private room. Lisa was great to work with in securing the room and choosing our dinner menu. We had a 3-course buffet style dinner. Everything was delicious and our guests raves about each dish. We are looking forward to coming back soon to eat off of their lunch/dinner menu. read more

Beautiful day to sit outside for lunch. Beer was great. Service was barely satisfactory. Had to continue to ask for basic things we needed. Silverware, salt, the check. Fries were cold. Crispy chicken sandwich was 2 small cutlets not a breast. Burgers are better at a fast food joint. Way over priced. read more

The modern Brewery with little decoration and plenty of window space to look out at downtown Main Street St Charles the bear hair was very good and the overall look of the place was great although very modern in generic this is another great location in st-charles Illinois read more

As a person with a dairy allergy it's nice to be able to find vegan options at local restaurants. I was super exited to try out this place as I've heard many good things from family and friends. Food was delicious and quick, but my largest issue comes with the the cocktail "Caribbean Bliss". I found out after I began to have severe stomach pains that the coconut syrup "Giffard Noix de Coco" contains milk products / proteins . Not sure if it was my lack of in-depth research on each ingredient or the negligence of the business to inform their customers of the allergens within their cocktails on the online menu. Couldn't stomach the rest of my food and left the half drank cocktail on the counter, little disappointed. read more

Been to this place twice. First time was pretty good, food was on par for craft brewery and beer selection was very good. Atmosphere is cool and they have great outside seating area by the river. Would probably give 4 stars but in our 2nd visit the wife got food poisoning from the ahi tuna sandwich. Shame as now we won't got back again. read more

We went in Thursday around 5:30 - hosting staff excellent vs previous experience..seated at high top. Excellent server. We had one shareable - the polenta / shrimp - it was so good! And a very large portion. We also shared the mole chicken sandwich with onion strings...SO good... can't wait to come back!! read more

Starting with the positives this place does have good drinks and beer. However the lack of professionalism was quiet astonishing when it came to the service and food. During our meal on the 4th one of our party members ordered a 25 dollar pasta dinner. When the food came out the meal was found lacking. The dish consisted of a half box of pasta a handful of veggies and a strip of chicken. The meal advertised a full chicken breast. Our party member requested more protein however our server stated that was not possible. After we where getting ready to leave we asked if the sever could comp the meal in some way. She start up said no and that how the food comes out of the kitchen is the way it is. We found that answer unacceptable. She did go talk to her manager however the answer remained the same. The manger did not even make an effort to come over to our table and apologize. I would not recommend coming here unless you are only coming for the drinks. If you do order food make sure to avoid the over priced pasta dishes. read more

Friends encouraged us to join them here for our first visit and we were blown away. Due to it raining, We were able to grab an inside corner window overlooking the outside patio on the beautiful Fox River of St. Charles. We sampled many in-house brews and found all to be delicious but unique creations. We moved on to appetizers to have a huge pretzel with a home made cheese sauce and 3 amazing extra small sauces, a massive mouth watering bowl filling brisket with peppers over home made chips, and an amazing Brie flatbread. Our server Kelly was amazing in her friendliness and knowledge of the menu and got drawn into a book sharing two of our group had. We also had the pleasure in celebrating Kelly's early birthday with the helpful Manager Jess's assistance. We ended with a wonderful desert at Kelly's suggestion. Overall, a real gem of a newer restaurant in a beautiful redeveloped area of Downtown St. Charles. 5 stars for beers, food and service. Can't wait to return! read more

have been here with friends many times, good selection and particularly great appetizers and drinks!

I know this place will be great. They are still working out the finer kinks - who isn't with COVID?! The wait times for a table are very long, and plan at least an extra 15-20 minutes on top of what they quote you. But there is lots to do and see nearby, which makes me very thankful for their reservation texting system. I really enjoyed the pretzels with beer cheese. That was such a delicious appetizer. My breaded chicken sandwich was also very flavorful, and the roasted red peppers with arugula were a great mix on it. My husband liked his shrimp sandwich, but he said it was a lot of bread for the amount of filling on it. While the flavors were great, the bread to filling ratio is a little off on that one. I had the mixed drink with coconut and lime in it. While delicious and much needed after a 90 minute wait, the $11 price tag is still fairly steep to me for how tiny the drink is. Definitely one I would make again at home myself though! Our server and everyone else who stopped by our table was really nice! We will definitely be back with friends and family. read more

First time we actually got in. Had too long wait times before.. there was a storm expected, so we chose to sit and eat inside! Husband had the ribs, I had the steak melt. Appetizer.... of beer cheese and pretzels. Ribs were tasty & tender. Appetizer..... what's not to love when cheese and beer marry????? Server was on top of her game! We tried a cocktail each off the menu and did not disappoint. Manager stopped by to make sure all was good! Nice touch for sure. Have a few and eat.. great outdoor seating area. See ya again soon! Keep it up! read more

I didn't find anything particularly great about Alter. The service was fine, the atmosphere ok, the food was just ok. I would not attempt the "obstacle course" it takes to get there again. There are many other better options. Not bad...just not great. read more

Great beer and awesome patio. DO NOT GET THE BRISKET SPECIAL!!! For $20 dollars you get four little shoe leather tough pieces of something I wouldn't feed to my dog. Overall all, the menu needs to be changed to thrive next to the other restaurants in the area. Will be back for the beer and atmosphere but will take my dinner & lunch business elsewhere. read more

Beer and location = awesome. Food = AppleBees. I've come here so many times with friends and family, so I've tried most of the menu including: Burger = decent, best thing on menu Shrimp linguine = too much oil Shrimp roll = bland Crab salad = canned crab Mole sandwich = there was literally no mole, very bad Veggies and polenta = $21 for veggies with balsamic drizzle I want Alter to do really well, but it needs to change its menu if it wants to compete with the better restaurants in Geneva. I've learned my lesson: come here for beer but go next door for dinner. read more
