We stopped by at opening (18H) and asked if we could make a reservation for a bit later as we wanted to explore the city a bit more. The owner with limited English told us no reservations, just come back. We did just that an hour later and he was able to seat the two of us. The owner suggested a great Riesling. We struggled a bit with the menu in German since the options variety boards and not the typical entrees we had gotten used to so the owner sent out the cook to help us. We ordered a cheese variety plate and a plate with some meat varieties, cheese, and bread. Both included a few pickles and tomatoes. They were exactly the type of light fare we were looking for that night and what we expected at a wine bar. The restaurant was loaded with antique character and fit the image of what you would want a hidden gem winestub in an old city like Cochem to look and feel like. The same larger groups we saw waiting for the opening were still enjoying their meals and more wine which was easy to understand. We started with a glass each, but enjoyed it so much we got a bottle. Highly recommend Alte Gutsschanke!

What better place to get an authentic German cuisine than in the country itself...Germany....it…read morealso happened to be my birthday so my son made reservations for the whole family to dine at Gasthaus Zur Breit, a local German restaurant located along a quiet road with beautiful views of the valley. Open 24/7. Our reservations was at 6:00 pm but got there early enough to snag the last parking spot left. The place was packed with locals and people from the Air Force Base nearby. You can hear a roar as you approach the entrance. A huge screen HDTV greets you as you come in and the locals are all glued watching their favorite sport Soccer. their team was playing the French at that time...that explains the loud noise...It was a good thing that our table was at the other end near the veranda facing the nice green hills below. The view from our table was stunning. We ordered the ff: Schnitzel Rustikal with bacon and baked onions, served with pan-fried potatoes and stringbeans, Spargelschnitzel, with asparagus and hollandaise scalloped with cheese, with bacon, Vesperplatte, A variety of different sausages served with homemade headcheese ,pan fried potatoes and bread, Gourmet Salad, The portions were Huge and everything came in a huge platter. There was something different from the menu...An Ostrich Steak for 17.80 Euro. I was told it was delicious but I don't want any surprises, Looking back I should have tried it. Well there's always a next time. For dessert the waiter came out with a big birthday cake complete with all the candles. It was so sweet of my son to buy the cake from the commissary and sneak it in without me seeing it.. He invited some friends who were also dining there to join us for dessert and a bottle of wine. Everything was good and everybody had a GREAT time!! The waitstaff were all very pleasant and cool. Will I go back there again. Absolutely!! to try the Ostrich Steak!!

Having already had brats just earlier in the evening, my friend pointed me to the long list of schnitzel options in the menu. I opted for the schnitzel cordon bleu because why not mix two cultures into one?! And with the factory a few kilometers down the road in Bitburg had to wash the meal down with a rather large glass of Bitburger beer. The beer was top notch. The meal was a bit overly salted including the fries that would've been fine without so much sodium. The flavor was ok but not the most memorable. It was kind of the equivalent to dining in any chain restaurant in America.

We passed a few restaurants that seemed open but deserted before coming across Rüdesheimer Schloss Weinhaus. Bright lights, lots of people, and what looked like a lively atmosphere. We were sold! Lively turned out to be an understatement. Unbeknownst to us, our ship's optional excursion to various German beer houses had ended up here, and with a band everyone was in fine fettle! The band played German music then American songs, the group was feeling no pain and dancing up a storm. Definitely lively! We had a nice booth a little farther away where we could observe all the activity but still enjoy our dinner. For us, it was a wonderful experience: delicious, authentic German cuisine, attentive, friendly service in English, and a well appointed, lovely restaurant with obvious history. The main course, the wine, and dessert were all wonderful. A memorable evening!

The restaurant is quite large and is a gathering place for food and drink, serving traditional German dishes (served family style) and local wine and beer. Schloss Weinhaus serves local beer and wine, and the welcoming servers keep everything coming, from starters, main course and desert. They don't slack on the beverages either. The crowning glory is the live music with standard German and American songs (some Elvis, Roll out the Barrel, et). It's a rollicking good time.
