    Wiener schnitzel excellent

What a wonderful restaurant! Clearly a hidden local gem Reviews are accurate - service, good quality and comfort are first class. The Wiener schnitzel and meat balls were excellent as was the sauerkraut. Worth booking ahead or you will not get a place!!

Absolutely wonderful restaurant with the best Schnitzel in Germany! The ambience and vibe is super cool, definitely visit when in town!

Very small local German eatery. Very friendly traditional German restaurant with an English menu. Schnitzel with potatoes and a bottle of beer. The atmosphere is quite and well decorated. The food was great, as expected. They do take credit cards. Per the picture, no parking. I recommend this place!

Breaded Schnitzel with Raclette Cheese & Ham

Decided to give this place a try based on good reviews and I wasn't disappointed! I came solo around 4:45-5 pm on a Tuesday and was able to sit with with two kind women who allowed me to join their table (communal seating). Everything else was booked from 6 pm onward! Cash only, but if you have to go to an ATM like I did, there is one very close by in the Cathedral area. I ordered the breaded schnitzel stuffed with raclette cheese and ham with a side salad (it was so good!) Would definitely recommend and return here again.

We had a wonderful dinner. Wiener Schnitzel was the best. I had the meatball. The outside was crispy and filled with a little cheese. The tomatoes that went with it were great! We had a vegetarian too. He had the tomato carpaccio which looked delicious. Take the walk and check this out. We were more than happy with our meal and the community.

    Lamb roast with feta salad

This was recommended by an expat colleague, and I couldn't be happier. While I was the only natural English speaker in the very small restaurant, the servers were fantastically accommodating (with my poor attempts at German). And the food and wine were outstanding. The lamb loin roast with feta salad was honestly one of the best meals I've had. If I ever get the chance to come back to Mainz, this will be my first stop. And a recommendation to anyone who cares to ask.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Mainz. The food is wonderful and the wine is delicious…read more(and not too expensive). Totally recommend!

Ok- so - when in Mainz I wanted to get a "wine-based" restaurant in Germany - I googled wine…read moretasting restaurants -and this restaurant showed up. Well I went and it failed in almost every way. Where do I start.... Walked in and the seats were all booked out. I have NO problem with this.... But they led us to one table that was for diners who did not have reservations. Ok - it was inside, it was hot, but shame on me for not pre-booking.... That is on me! So - thinking we were going to get some good wine advice- after all - it was listed as a wine tasting place.. we picked some food items - and asked for advice... well - no real advice at all...actually nothing. Ordered some food. It came out with the wine that was arbitrarily selected. Ate it, drank it. Whatever.... Then the other server came over.... Asked what we else wee would like.... She pretty much said - I don't drink so I don't know - don't ask me. On this I am thinking - why the hell should she ever serve in a Weinstube. She took an order - and what do you know - NOTHING! Nothing ever came - nothing ever said.... Nothing. So crappy wine advice.... The second server never showed up and clearly did not give a damn about service. After 30 minutes of waiting for the dessert we ordered not showing- we threw in the towel. SO - WOULD NOT RECOMMEND

VISITED FOR LUNCH AND LIKED IT ============================…read more My husband and I looked for a German restaurant for lunch on Friday, April 10, 2026 after searching for German restaurants with good reviews. It is definitely very rustic and the service may be very slow even when not busy, but the food was good.

I love this place! The decor is totally awesome, bringing you back to Germany's yesteryear. One…read moreof their specialties is their schweinhaxe (pork knuckle) served with a side of potatoes and sauerkraut. German food is, of course, heavy with carbs and meat -- and most of all, pair this massive piece of pork with beer...and you're absolutely in heaven! They have a fairly large selection of beer from Pils, Radler, Weizens... as well as my favorite COLABIER (Germans *LOVE* mixing cola with beer). They also have a fairly extensive wine list too -- including APFELWEIN (made out of apples) which is well-known in neighboring HESSE (Frankfurt) region... and lots of soft-drinks too (including, Germany's [and MY] favorite, apfelschorle)! There is definitely lots to eat here and lots to drink here at a reasonable price. I've only had schweinhaxe once and it was pretty darn good here. The pork skin was nice and crispy--reminiscent of Chinese-styled roasted pork, and the pork meat underneath was tender and juicy. Delish! Potatoes and sauerkraut are pretty much standard, like at any other German restaurant. This restaurant isn't unique--as there are many other Augustinerkellers all around Germany, but the one in Mainz, as I was told, was modeled after the famous one in Munich. When I return to Mainz again, if I ever do, I will have to come back here for their schweinhaxe. Just the thought of fried pork knuckle gives me a warm feeling in my tummy. :) And by the way, the waitstaff here speaks English. A lot of times, Germans don't speak very good English, but here--they speak it pretty well. So non-English speakers...you won't have a problem :)
