First off, fair warning, they DO NOT TAKE CREDIT CARDS. Traveling in Europe you should always have Euro on you. That being said, there is an ATM around the corner, easy walking distance from the restaurant. There is an English menu and our waiter spoke enough English that I didn't have to use too much of my broken German. I thought the food was good. My pork knuckle, potatoes and beer was great. My son thought the schnitzel wasn't that good. That was disappointing. I tried some of his and certainly have had better. Nice outdoor seating area, with ashtrays on every table (yuck, but again, we're in Europe!). Not much of a view and not a real good location for people watching. Nothing really wrong with this place, but with so many other options, I likely won't be back. read more

Got the split pizza and it was amazing along with the pizza rolls. Service was great and drinks were good! They were busy and it was a nice chill vibe! Love the Italian decor and ambiance! Went here with my family to experience my first German restaurant. This is one interesting place... people from all over, people in suits, people in shorts and a strange looking creature on the wall. I learned later, the creature was something akin to our jack-a-lope here in Colorado but with a German flare. My Sister-In-Law did all the ordering since I don't speak German. She ordered me a Dunkel, some Schnitzel and what I believe was Pumpkin soup. Who knew Pumpkin soup could be so tasty, thick and creamy. Be fore warned, the portions are bigger than average here. I would have given this restaurant a 5 star as the food and atmosphere was very nice. The reason I gave them 1 less star is the fact they turned away three parties who came to the restaurant based on their hours of operation posted. The restaurant was empty and they still turned these customers away as they decided to close early based on low demand. They should stick to their posted hours of business based on this website and others or make the effort in revising these hours where they are posted in order to alert their customers. read more

Most of my co-workers eat here. I heard about it for years and years and years, and I finally got to try it out. After a short of a lengthy walk from the hotel, we find this unassuming restaurant filled with diners outside the establishment. Yes, it's my first proper sit down restaurant in Germany, so this spot will be the one to baptize me on my very first schnitzel. Not that rubbish made with chicken either, they created that for americans. I prefer the full on pork schnitzel. The food came and it's topped with white asparagus and smothered in cream sauce. Mmmmmmmmmm!!! It looks crazy amazing. The batter was crispy, plus combined with the cream sauce it's rich and hella yummy. The asparagus complements the whole dish as a flavor cutter since you need at least a vegetable to cleanse out the palette a little. Was it the best schnitzel I have ever had?? No... no sir not at all, BUT! I enjoyed the crap out of it. The service and the dining experience was very pleasant. The girl who was assigned to us was very attentive. She checked in on us from time to time, even the owner came to help out. Until the time somebody shows me where the real good stuff if. This is my measuring stick for schnitzel here in Mainz. Well, perhaps I was expecting more based on some of the reviews. Good, solid place. Service good. Food was about average, I'd say. Spargel soup was good/ok. The chicken schnitzel with peaches was different-good. Solid place for the price, the folks working there are nice, but it isn't quite up to being a place I'd recommend higher than several other German style places. But if you're looking for solid food at a reasonable price, then this is worth a try. read more

A frequent stop from crew members on layover from my airline, and it's easy to see why once there. Prices are great and portions are large. Is it the place to go for the most incredible schnitzel of your life? Well, no. But it is quite tasty and will satisfy the craving and then some! Not to mention, the staff is always quite attentive, friendly, and prompt. It's tucked away on a side street, so it's a quiet location if you're particularly looking for that. Meh - how to best describe my experience: the price is good, the food ok and the service friendly. The place seems to be specialized on airline crews and they have a printed menu in English. However, after a couple of times it gets pretty boring as the menu hasn't changed a bit since my first visit. I will go there again but Mainz has so much to offer that it would be sad to only go to one place - even if the value for the money is ok. read more

Been here twice, first time I had schnitzel which was super salty, but I loved the potatoes. Portions here are huge. This time I had the pork knuckle (which I had to take half home) and it was only €13. It wasn't as crispy nor tender as I had hoped. Inside is exactly what I would expect of a German tavern. This is the perfect place for American tourists to grab a German schnitzel. Those seeking something more local and authentic may want to try elsewhere. That being said, the service was good and the food delicious. I started with an onion soup which was good/tasty/not the best. I enjoyed the beef stroganoff, too much to finish in one sitting. The beef was cooked med rare perfectly. My colleagues had schnitzel platters that looked absolutely salivating and both plates were cleared by the end. Prices are average and for the food quality/portions far from unreasonable. I adore Zur Sonne! They are so good to us flight crew and I see that their regular patrons are treated with equal care. The food is excellent, always tasty and hot! Try the red cabbage and ANY of the schnitzels! They give you a lovely complimentary applekorn (?) aperitif after your meal that is super yummy! Many of the staff are long time employees and always recognize their "regulars". Seriously awesome food and a true "gem" in the heart of Mainz!! read more

If you're hungry - especially if you're hungry - for beer, wine, and big plates of classic German food, you cannot go wrong here. Great place to bring your friends and co-workers. I ordered the daily "special plate" which had three meats, a side of fried potatoes, and salad. The other reviews do not lie when they say generous portions are served here. I thought it would be smaller portions of three meats, but it was a full plate of meat. Service was good, and I was offered a table away from the bar soon after arrival. I entered around 7 PM on a Tuesday, so it wasn't "weekend" busy. Recommend and would return. read more

Used to be a good place for dinner, but was extremely disappointed this time, there was just 2 waitress for attending all the table, I have waited for at least 5 minutes , standing at the door, almost begging for attention, and both of waitress was crossing In front of me, without telling not even a welcome, neither in German or English, after 5 minutes,they gave a table, and another 5 sitting there ,she just left a German menu and turned way from me, I don't even have time to ask for an English menu. After 10 minutes , she came to my table saying she had made a mistake and there was a reservation for the table, I have just stand up and left the table, and returned to the entrance door, another five minutes there, until I just gave up and left the place.
