We visited the Alta Lodge in August for a wedding and stayed there for several days. The Alta Lodge feels like a lodge experience from days of the past. There are no passenger elevators, so trekking up and down the stairs with luggage without being "climatized" to the altitude is a challenge. It should be noted the staff will assist you with your luggage if necessary. Regarding the location, it is fantastic. The views are incredible; it literally looks like a post card. Although not skiing season, there are lifts (not in operation due to summer) everywhere. I imagine it gets pretty packed and crazy during the winter. Hiking opportunities are everywhere right outside the lodge. We went on a "novice" hike that took us to the top of a mountain like eight miles away. OMG. As part of the wedding party and my officiant duties, there were multiple breakfast and dinners organized by Alta Lodge. The staff was fantastic, and the food was good. Alta Lodge also has a weekend brunch that attracts people from all over the area. The brunch was top notch! Regarding the accommodations, we had a fireplace, balcony, and a view of the mountains. It was a great sight. Our room did a have a bad smell (as did other rooms in our group) that I believe is the result of months/years of moisture in the carpet, drapes, and wood. This is the only thing I did not care for. Only other issue is the front desk is not occupied 24/7, and anyone can walk off the street and into the hotel. I would recommend better security. Overall, the customer service and quality of wedding organizer made up for the two issues noted above. Again, the service at Alta Lodge was excellent! read more

We drove up to Alta for their Sunday brunch. It certainly is a beautiful spot. Alta is unspoiled, and dining while looking at that alpine view is a marvelous experience. The brunch is massive, and all the favorites are served. In addition, Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine can be individually ordered. The "all you can eat" buffet has an assortment of salads, egg dishes, a couple of pastas, breads etc. There is a dessert table as well. During your meal, an innocuous band plays music they call jazz. These musicians didn't go the Berklee School of Music, and their sound is more akin to an elevator than the Village Vanguard. The music is an apt reflection of the food at Alta. There's a lot of items, but nothing is memorable. Nothing is horrible, but nothing is good. It's like eating elevator music, if you get what I mean. Yet, I will return to Alta Lodge's brunch just for the experience. The drive is beautiful, and the view inspiring. With this kind of stimuli, the food is allowed to be an afterthought. read more

First class service from the staff and a selection of high quality items either from the all you can eat menu or the entree section. I've been wanting to try this place for a while now and so glad I did. It's definitely worth the short drive up the canyon. I had a great time because I didn't have to cook & clean. I could just concentrate on the skiing! I can't wait to go back again next year. Alta Lodge has all the essentials and none of the bells and whistles that could clutter your ski vacation experience. The staff is super awesome. Thanks, everyone! AMENITIES Use the courtesy phone at top of the stairs to let them know you've arrived. Allow the porter to carry your luggage. You still have to get used to the altitude. Take it easy on your first day. Store your skis and poles in the basement locker room. You'll find the combination in your room on a slip of paper. Boot and glove dryer in your room. Free wi-fi. Free morning yoga classes. Free afternoon tea (plus juice & cookies). Occasional star watching events after dinner. Movies and other events in the TV lounge. Borrow a DVD to watch in your room, on your own laptop. (No TVs in the rooms.) Don't trust the time on the alarm clock in your room. We kept setting it to the correct time, and it kept getting changed to 15~20 minutes ahead. If you need a fluffy white robe, fill out the form on the desk in your room. You don't need to bring a towel from your room to the sauna / hot tubs - there are extra towels outside the locker rooms. The sauna is in the locker room itself. General store and gift shop. Hours are posted. The Cross Town Trolley runs until after dark but the rope tow up the last little hill to Alta Lodge closes at 5. Have the Alta Lodge number programmed into your cell phone. They are happy to pick you up and bring you back to the hotel. One day I was at the bootfitter (Alta Sports) 'til late and they came and got us. So nice! YOUR ROOM I was perfectly comfortable in our room, though there wasn't much floor space for our morning Pilates warmup. Yes, you can hear your neighbors partying in the next room but you're too tired from skiing to be kept awake by that. Snuggle into your soft bed and sleep hard! Aveda products are in the bathroom, in case you forgot to pack your own shampoo. The little packets of salt are for the room humidifier. Use it every night! LODGE RESTAURANT If you have any special dietary needs, tell your server. The people in the kitchen can modify recipes to suit you. Great breakfast buffet. You can also have eggs made to order. For dinner, it's like being at Grandma's house - you can ask for smaller portions, or even have seconds if you wish. Every night there are three entrees (one red meat, one seafood, one vegetarian). Save room for dessert, because they have a lot of great choices, and the portions aren't enormous. I often had the mixed berry compote just by itself. This is for an update of the brunch. Chef Raddon retired and the reigns were turned over to the new guy who's only been around 20 years. That said, while most things stay the same, some change. It's still a great deal, and they've done a fantastic job of shade on the deck compared to the old days. The layout and style is the same, but a couple things have changed. The magic dish for decades was the teriyaki chicken thighs. They were marinated for five days in a mild sauce that made the flavor concentrate all the way through the meat. Now it's gone. So is the giant bowl of chocolate mousse with whipped cream layers. The thighs were replaced with chipotle spiced boneless chicken thighs that were a little dry and not really showing the chipotle very much. There was a nice pot de creme instead of the mousse, but it's not the same thing. So, I'll miss a couple of the classics. I'll hope for some form of signature items to replace them. It won't stop me from coming. read more

Stopped in for brunch after checking out wildflowers at Albion meadows and Cecret lake trails (in July). The view from our table outside was incredible. The food was delicious. Great salads, lots of vegetables, eggs Benedict, waffles, cannoli, multigrain blueberry muffins, I won't go through the whole buffet menu unceremoniously, but basically it was all good and really well done. Unfortunately, we were there when the mountain shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This lodge has the most amazing staff. They made the cancellation of the remainder of our stay seamless with immediate refunds for our rooms, ski rentals, and ski lift tickets placed to our credit card. The employees had to be disappointed by the loss of their seasonal employment, but they remained so pleasant during the turmoil. As for the hotel itself: It's not a luxury hotel, but it's meant to be a ski vacation, not a spa. The room was clean, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the food was delicious and well-presented. First, I am going to say that I have had nothing but excellent experiences here. The following comments are intended not as criticisms (because frankly this lodge is what it is...and is superb at being itself...see other reviews for details) I could go on for years describing the awesome experience we've had here. I am leaving comments intended to provide tidbits of wisdom for those new to the Lodge. This is a true ski lodge adventure, with nothing but friendly people and helpful staff. The four stars I give the Alta Lodge are for real. 1) Do NOT bring a car...I know it is tempting to drive in because SLC is so close, and renting a 4x4 is fun...but trust me you will be angry and disappointed if you do so. Why? There is NO parking. None. Driving up for the day is fine, as there is a lot of day-only parking by both bases. But overnight, you will find no place to park. Even if you do find a spot (between 4-5pm is about the only time to roll the dice) you will be subject to some seriously draconian local laws that end up with your car in SLC suburbs, and you out $500+. Example: you MUST snow shovel out 2 ft in all directions around your car whenever the local constable feels up to it, usually about 12 hours after last heavy snowstorm. If you have experienced snowfall in Alta, you understand why this is an issue. Just don't drive in. Please. When you find yourself cursing under your breath, remember I warned you. 2) You will be carrying gear/bags up and down stairs pretty much constantly. Three flights from surface to lobby in sub- zero weather, at 8500', with snow covering the stairs, and multiple doors to pass through is no joke, son. The staff will help, but you are going to be doing the heavy lifting. There are no elevators. None. Period. If your cardio is not up to snuff, you will feel it immediately. 3) The hallways in the lodge are narrow. Comfy, but narrow...to the point of only being passable by one person at a time. This applies to the stairwells, so be prepared to wait. Dragging skis up and down from the lockers is not a delightful experience. 4) This is sort of a niche comment: if your kids are going to ski school, you will need to carry all of their gear up those same three flights (with multiple doors) I mentioned above. At 8500'. In sub-zero temps. Just a warning. Why is this important? Because newbies to skiing will NOT be able to use the rope tow to transport themselves to the Albion base (where all the green runs are.) That means you will need to use the shuttle provided by the Lodge...which leaves at the top of the stairs. There are places to store their gear at the Albion basin (like at the Alta Java coffee shop) but you will pay a premium. Last check it was $5/set per night, plus $10/boots. 5) If you are renting gear, the Deep Powder House is up the stairs from the lobby. Convenient, but the folks fitting you need some experience. I also suggest that if you choose to rent here, the slightly pricier upgrade to "demo" skis and boots is worth it as their basic rental equipment is absolute garbage. Better choice: rent in town (SLC) and save the pain. 6) The lack of TV is not a big deal...the kids' club is fun for all and gets the computer/social media addicted kids out doing something besides the usual Nintendo stuff; Even if they need more stimulation, the internet connection is fine and free, and there is a big selection of DVDs in the lobby for easy check out. 7) OMG this review is too long! Bear with me, almost done. The walls are paper-thin. Keep your expressions of passion to a minimum. 8) Use the (provided) humidifier in your room constantly. The dry air in this high altitude dehydrates you before you even don a pair of skis. I would also suggest a simple bottle of saline nasal spray from you local pharmacy to avoid nosebleeds and stuffed up noses. In this environment, Sudafed and Afrin are near useless compared to simple saline spray (i.e. doctor speaking.) 9) Have I mentioned how great the staff are? Mikey and Gregg provide a high level of personal service (as do all the staff, though their names stand out.) Enjoy the tea/crumpets/cookies/lemonade apres ski in the deck room while your kids are monitored by the kids' club staff outside (sledding anyone?) Better yet, hit the Sitzmark Club for an apple cider with brandy, and destress. 10) Last Tip: bring a swimsuit. The sauna and hot tubs call to those weary and overused calf muscles. Insider's Tip: when you go to breakfast (which is great) make a PB&J to take with you for lunch on the slopes. The staff will gladly wrap it in foil for you, and save you from suffering the typical lousy preheated burger on the slopes. Add in a piece of fruit from the never-ending fruit bowl and you're set! If I could give this place 0 stars I would! This was the absolute worst hotel experience of my life. I stayed here along w/ my sister for 3 nights and the accommodations were terrible. I am genuinely confused by all of the 5 star reviews! #LIES! First of all, the lodge is located way up high in mountains where the scenery is absolutely beautiful... Unfortunately, this is the one and only good thing about this place. The stairs: There are no elevators at this ski lodge so you have to walk up and down 3 huge flights of stairs to get in and out of the hotel/lobby, this was terrible for us and will be to anyone else who has never experienced being at this high of altitude whether you are in shape or not. Trekking these stairs at 8,600 miles high and having no other option is outright hazardous!!! The room: Just awful.... If I didn't know any better, I'd say these rooms were put together w/ a hot glue gun! The walls are paper thin, cracks and holes in the ceiling, dark, dingy, smelly, old and there is no tv, microwave, mini fridge, iron, or even a clock radio!! Beds are hard as a rock and sheets are paper thin. The air conditioning system is a huge, old and loud box that sticks out from the window, carpets are filthy and there were open spaces in between the SINGLE paned Windows which left the Windows all foggy/sweaty and exposing our room to the outside elements. The bathroom is actually quite nice compared to the rest of the room. Bright, small and pretty clean. On our last night we were abruptly woken up by a LOUD banging noise coming from the air conditioner. We called the front desk and were told maintenance would not be on duty until 7am but were willing to come take a look at it... That was a huge waste of time as the guy from the front desk took one look and said he had NO idea what was causing the noise and didn't know how to fix it. The air in the mountains is very thin which makes it quite difficult to breathe, especially at night. Thankfully, they provide you with the world's very first humidifier to get you through the struggle! Seriously, the humidifier provided is REALLY old and gave minimal relief during the night. It also had a sign on it that it is "best used with 1 packet of salt," and of course, we weren't provided any. The pool: There is a very nice view of the mountains from the deck outside of the pool area, but one of the sliding glass doors was broken and wouldn't open/close. We tried to activate the bubbles in one of the pools by turning the dial and nothing happened... so, we went over to the next pool ( btw it's not a pool at all, it's a HOT tub) to use that one. We turned the dial to active the bubbles and water from the first pool started shooting up out of the Jets and splashing water all over the floor and making a very loud noise! We saw a staff member passing by and told him, he tried to fix it. He couldn't. He told a maintenance worker who came in and said that's how it was "supposed" to run.....? WHAT?! It was so loud and distracting we just left. The staff: Overall, I thought the staff were pretty friendly and at least made an attempt to be helpful until it came to the "breakfast situation." This ended up being one of the biggest disappointments of our entire stay. Based on several reviews, many had positive things to say about the breakfast served here. We were told that because we were attending the conference down the street we were excluded from the daily breakfast at the hotel because "they heard" that complimentary breakfast would be served at the conference. Apparently, there was a miscommunication because breakfast was in fact NOT included in the conference we were attending. We expressed to the front desk that we were not being served breakfast at the conference and we were STILL excluded from daily breakfast at the hotel. Had we actually gotten to try the food here and liked it, this review may have earned an extra star... I guess we'll never know. Frankly, this place just needs to be completely remodeled, revamped, and redone. I cannot see how anyone could ever stay here in the winter season when it's snowing, staying here in summer was as bad as it gets. Also, all of the other hotels in the area were completely sold out at the time of our stay so it was impossible to find other accommodations, if we could have, we definitely would have. After years of hearing about the legendary Sunday Brunch at Alta Lodge, I finally experienced it myself last week. And despite the high expectations I had going in, the overall experience still surpassed all of them. The food was incredible. They had an extremely wide range of top quality breakfast and lunch items available, and were eager and willing to bring me anything that wasn't already out. Delicious coffee, fresh juices, croissants, fruit, waffles, eggs benedict, you name it, they had it. Although the food was delicious, the service was incredible. Extremely friendly and helpful staff from the moment I stepped in the door until the moment I left. My server, Mikey, was one of the best servers I've ever had. He was on top of everything, kind, funny, personable, everything you could hope for (but seldom get) in a server. The Alta Lodge is known for it's "at home" feel. Many of the other customers knew the staff by name, and were visibly feeling as though they were at their home away from home. But as an Alta Lodge novice, I was pleasantly surprised how "at home" I felt as well, despite it being my first time there. read more

I have always wanted to stay at the Alta Lodge for a ski vacation and finally did the last week of January 2011. This is the old venerable lodge dating back to 1939! European style in the Mecca of Utah Powder. Real skiing at its best. The rooms are clean and well appointed, our room in the newer East Wing was very quiet at night, included boot warmers, a killer view of the mountain, a desk, plenty of drawers and storage, hooks for ski gear and a phone.But the very best thing: NO TV!, I finished one book and got half through another. Alta encourages relaxation.. The lobby is small but invites one to sit and read a good book next to the fireplace. Included is an excellent breakfast daily, with eggs to order, fruit plate to order, buffet options that should satisfy just about anyone. Good Starbucks coffee and Tazo teas. Dinner gives one the choice of three entrees, soup and salad and dessert. They have a good selection of tasty wines at reasonable prices. The Sunday night Buffet is fantastic and was my favorite meal at Alta, with great salads, shell fish, fruit, excellent smoked salmon and my favorite, pickled herring in sour cream with fresh onion. (something rarely offered ),The Sunday buffet entrees included teriyaki chicken, curry over wild rice, spinach crepes, sweet potato fritters. All excellent. Then there was a dessert table but I had too much by then and wanted to sleep so I passed on the cheese cake, tiramissu, and more. Diners are encouraged to join others and share large tables which was delightful, we enjoyed the company of guest from all over the world. Many guests are regular visitors booking the same week annually for decades, or coming several times a year to stay at the Lodge. The staff gets an A+, from the young bellmen lugging heavy ski gear up and down three flights of stairs, to the afternoon tea and cookies hostess, to the front desk staff but most of all the restaurant staff was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I came herewith my 6-old and can't wait to bring my entire family back.There aren't TVs in the room but who cares? This is a place for skiing or hiking, full stop. This is the best place for skiing (I have never been there in other season, than winter) I have visited in the US or Europe. The place is charming, the staff is very welcoming, and careful in fulfilling all requests. We've never felt safer in any other hotel - leaving phones, tablets, computers, money in the room meant we will find them exactly where they were (there is a safe, don't misunderstand me!). Of course, I understand the people, who complained about the stairs to the road; the thing is, though, if you have come for skiing, these stairs you won't need to climb, unless you want to use your car and drive for an hour to go ski somewhere else. But why drive, since you can go to the top of the mountain, and just move on the other side? That is, if you are not happy with the lack of snowboarders. In other words: I highly recommend it, and wish more people discover its charm. If there's one thing that was changed recently, and could be criticized, that's the change of the wooden fireplace with o gas one. P.S. My wife Megan and I had the most amazing wedding experience at The Alta Lodge, in Alta, Utah. From start to finish, we were stunned with how easy and lovely the experience was. Here are some of the highlights that made this place the best possible wedding venue we could have imagined: 1. Maren, the wedding coordinator, is amazing. She was always super responsive to any of our emails and phone calls. She was really knowledgeable and organized. She made sure that we knew timelines and what was coming up. The day of the wedding was a breeze--she took care of EVERYTHING. The whole space was completely set up with all of our decorations, place settings, and guest book. She helped us immensely when we didn't know where and when we were supposed to walk down the aisle and she made all of the transitions from each part of our evening very smooth and easy. 2. The rest of the staff at the Alta Lodge were incredible. We heard from so many of our guests and family members how nice everyone was. I don't think I've ever stayed anywhere that has been so accommodating or where people were so willing to answer our questions or help us figure out logistics of our stay. There are a lot of stairs getting in and out of the building, and the staff jumped to help us (and our guests) with any luggage or bags and were super quick to drive my 93 year-old grandma to the venue so she didn't have to take the stairs. At one point at dinner, the waiter asked Megan if she wanted an additional plate of gnocchi and brought her more food! 3. The view from where the ceremony takes place is breathtaking. I've never been to a wedding before when people exclaim how gorgeous the background is (now, it was our wedding, so it makes sense that people are telling us nice things, but we totally agree!). We can't imagine a prettier place in Utah to get married. Also, a lovely moose made an appearance during the toasts and decided to hang around to hear everyone's speeches! 4. This place is super affordable and easy to understand the billing procedures. We had seen horror stories online about people being surprised when they received their bills after the wedding; we thought they were super transparent about all of the charges and we felt that we left having a full understanding of the payment. Also, we loved that there were so many things included in the price: a free night, a wedding coordinator, flowers, linens, etc. 5. The venue is SO cool. Megan and I are not super fancy people, so if you're looking for something *really* fancy this is probably not the place for you. But, if you like eclectic and cool places, this is the place. We loved that there was a hot tub and that breakfast was included every day. The brunch was AMAZING. There was a nice room on the top floor that was a common area for us to continue our wedding celebration after the actual wedding was over. 6. Finally, we were a little nervous about having a wedding in Utah as a queer couple. When we asked the Lodge about how they felt about having a queer wedding, they were very enthusiastic about us having our wedding there. We only felt totally supported and celebrated the entire weekend. One of the staff, Gregg, went out of his way to tell us how proud they were to have our wedding there. He also informed us that we were the first queer wedding at the Lodge. We are happy to say that we were the first and that we could see anyone feeling completely welcome here! read more

The Alta Lodge is wonderful. It looks and feels like a classic European ski lodge, with a warm fire in the bar and lobby in the winter, and incredible access to wild flowers and hiking in the summer. Let me tell you, I tend to be inadvertently critical (ok, I'm going to call that 'detail oriented' instead). This place was EXCEPTIONAL!! The staff were SO nice, without being unprofessional, which is often a difficult task to accomplish (or so it would seem). True, there are a number of stairs and a fairly lengthy walk from the road to the lodge, but at most hours of the day or night the lodge provides a van that will shuttle guests' luggage up to the top so as to ameliorate this inconvenience. The rooms are humble (i.e. without televisions), but the bed may have been of the highest quality I've encountered in a hotel. All in all I would CERTAINLY stay there again, even if Alta Ski Area maintains its no-snowboarding policy :-) read more

I cannot say enough good things about the Alta Lodge! It is truly wonderful. The staff is the perfect mixture of professional, courteous and laid back in that mountain kind of way. The rooms are clean and cozy. The Food and Bar are top-notch. The whole place has a wonderful family atmosphere and allows you to spend time with others at the lodge and yet still allows you plenty of opportunity to relax and get away. And for the winter vacationers, you cannot beat the option to step into your skis right outside the door. read more

Very disappointing they don't offer espresso coffee. Have to put on ski gear and go find a nearby caffè.

The Alta Lodge is unique among ski resorts...no rental car hassles, no dinner reservations extended by a wait of an hour in the bar, no tipping, in short , No Hassles. I read one of the reviews (bad) and wonder if that guy even stayed there? I usually go in January as we have gone the same week for almost twenty years. No snow this January and our reservation was moved to last week when it dumped 55"!!! The staff is very friendly as the ski bums that work here Know it has to work smoothly and efficiently and to keep the customer happy. What makes them happy is that skiers go to Alta to ski as there are no shopping centers, coffee or wine bars, stuffy crowded restaurants: and the staff finally got the good snow they have waited for all season. All the ever pleasing staff was smiling and friendly as ever and I have been going since 1978. The place is a Lodge from the late '30's. Yes, the rooms are small but clean. Recent efforts at remodeling show quite well and are pleasing. The food has not changed much at all over the years as there is no reason or need to change...it is all about understated comfort and quality. Unique to many Utah ski areas is the ability to fly in and ski that day as well as the day of departure. Ski vacations are not cheap so why lose two days in the process? Everything here made my ski trip exactly what I wanted! Amazing brunch in the summer too. Great food and service. I love the family feel. It was like being in Europe. If you get a chance, try the almond cake, it is AMAZING! read more
