The VIP room was pretty empty as well. And you're not allowed to bring outside food or drink. Some shirts and hoodies for sale but pretty lackluster overall. Many people complained about the plot, but I went in with no expectations and had a good time. If you reframe it as you somehow fell into hell and need to escape, then you'll have a great time. Don't think too deeply. The actors, ambiance, decorations and room setups were well done. The ice room could've been colder with some dry ice. I do think it's pretty steep for a 35 minute escape maze and the behind the scenes was cool but short. The whole experience took us an hour, including bathroom breaks. I recommend going early because it seemed like the actors don't get a lot of breaks so I'm glad I got to see their more passionate acting when they're not tired yet. TL:DR - An emotionally moving experience that immersed the senses…read more Located South of Ktown and in the same building as Lab Rat Escape Room. There is street parking on the adjacent streets. Before I begin to gush about how much I love this experience, I think its important to note that this is not an escape room. There are puzzle elements but it is first and foremost a story. And that story is fucking good! I had done the Lab Rat escape room the previous year and it is still the best escape room I have ever done. I wanted to see what else Hatch Escapes offered and the Nest sounded great, so I went with that. My wife and I showed up on a cool Sunday morning and we're unsure of what to expect. We were lead to the 5th floor of the building and down a row of storage units. We were handed a flashlight, a tape deck, and then were guided into one. What would ensue for the next 2 hours was a beautiful story of promise, romance, dreams, heartbreak, and the memories of a world that might have existed. I was honestly not ready for this. I am not a crier in the slightest and found myself tearing up as I progressed through the rooms. The final room took all my will to not just break down bawling. When we walked back out into the sun, I felt a renewed sense of appreciation for the people in my life. If you're on the fence about going, just do it. You will have a great time and a moving experience.

Let's just say I didn't understand the other reviews about that it can make you feel emotional, until halfway through, something got me in the feels, and then at the very end, just when you think it's over, one more thing got all my emotions hit (in a good way) and I didn't want to leave. It was so special. The Nest is similar to an escape room as you are still solving some puzzles, but it's without pressure and everything builds upon itself as you go. I definitely recommend The Nest. I know it's strange but, I almost want to go back and do it again alone, just to absorb it in all over again.

The video they make you watch at the beginning also helped hype it up, as you're in a totally dark room and getting primed for some scares to come. The maze was especially scary when we went through it as it seemed like there was nobody else in attendance at the time, so you really got the sense of being all alone in there and knew that all of the scares would be focused on you. The actors' timing was good and they got me a few times for sure. I also liked how they took you through several types of scenery that all felt a bit different. The only part that wasn't great was the ending. They had a sort of blinding light that you had to walk towards, but it wasn't clear where to go from there. We almost went through a curtain back to another part of the maze by accident before we realized we were supposed to go out the door... and then it was over. I think they could have done a better job designating the exit and ending with more of a bang - it would be great to position a scare actor right under that light. This haunt was not on the level of some of the super impressive home haunts that are chock full of props and actors, but it's still a fun time in a local community, and at $3 each or 2 for $5, it's still worth the price of admission.

To add to this, we needed to be buzzed in so we could enter the premise. Once we were inside, the ambiance changed completely and there were a couple of IG worthy spots to take pictures while checking in. We opted for the spinning art experience since my daughter is too young to partake in the more elaborate ones. Originally, we booked for 4 people but one person got sick so we asked if we could transfer the funds for that person for another experience since there are no refunds. Luckily, was able to contact them the day before and added the bunny paint pour over experience. Ozzie was our guide and he was super kind and gentle with my daughter. We were instructed to pick 5 colors and then we donned our plastic bootie covers, apron and gloves. We entered our designated art room and was blown away by all the colors on the wall. There was even a tire swing which my daughter was all about. The spinning art experience was a lot of fun and I enjoyed seeing my daughter embrace the paint. I think her favorite part was when she had free rein to paint all over the walls. Overall, we had a great time. Only down side is that it does go by super quick and is quite an expensive experience for one hour. However, we get to have a treasured memento which is ready for pick up about 5 days afterwards and we did have a great time. That being said, #noragrats!

From their website to the lobby to even the hallway and entrances to the escape room, everything was incredibly detailed and on theme. Our group appreciated the acting by both our game master and the live actor, as they both added a theatrical element to the experience. I believe the Ministry of Peculiarities only hosts one escape room concept, which is called Hope End. It was on the creepier/unsettling side, but not too scary, so everyone (ranging from scaredy cats to horror enthusiasts) is likely to have a good time. It also accommodated our huge group of eleven (I believe 12 people is the max), and there were plenty of puzzles to go around. I would definitely recommend the Ministry of Peculiarities to anyone looking for a unique escape room experience! Personally, I'm keeping an eye out for updates -- I'd love to come back with my friends if they introduce a new concept.

There are live actor(s) but no physical touch. Their performance is really impressive, which seems more common in LA. Coming from SF, any live actors are usually much more reserved, so this was a thrilling change of pace. Clues are given freely and appropriately, which is a skill in itself and keeps the experience moving from one satisfying puzzle conclusion to the next. Overall I highly recommend Hope's End, it is an enjoyable experience appropriate for our group of 7 people. As a huge escape room fan, I can confidently say this is in the top 10% of escape rooms I've done.

It's definitely not a small con anymore and I still reminisce on not just the days when it was held at the Ontario Con Center (already getting pretty big), but at the Marriott Hotel in LAX, but if you want a bigger winter con, ALA is the place to go! They still do have the traditions that make this con unique, like the ALA ribbons. These can be acquired from attending certain gatherings, events, or panels, interacting with cosplayers or other attendees, answering trivia or quiz questions or doing a challenge, cosplaying from a certain series or character yourself, going through the ribbon station (I believe there's trading and a ribbon gacha as well), and even from certain artists and vendors. Just be MINDFUL and RESPECTFUL regarding ribbons since I've seen con goers turn their noses towards others for not having ribbons to give them? Like what in the world? Relax! There's a decent amount of vendors and artists, but I think it's honestly enough to see in 2 days (I was only there for 2 days after all). They do have some of the industry guests that I've seen at AX, so that's pretty cool. Really liked the Gamer/Anime Waifu themed energy drink mix that they were handing out different samples out every day. There's a small arcade area that's free to play as well, a singular maid café serving food and boba, an itasha alley inside, food trucks right outside, and there's a wing connecting the main con area to a separate side with the costume repair and other rooms and gathering areas. Just an FYI for cosplayers or photographers trying to get to some locations. It would be noted on the con map, but wouldn't indicate which floor it was on so there was some lateness and confusion since there are upper and lower outside layers. Would be cool if they mentioned this in future program guides. Sucks that the photo backdrop room is no longer a thing at ALA, but alas, I guess you can just go to the aquarium or pier instead for photos. My biggest qualm is the swap meet. Not only was it inaccessible to those with disabilities (being reachable only through a staircase), it's just ridiculous to even expect the sellers to carry SO MUCH merchandise down those stairs instead of having an elevator available to them. ALSO, Jesus Christ guys. Just implement an online queueing system or a virtual queue system. It's ridiculous that some attendees have to physically wait in line for 2+ hours just to have good pickings of the swap meet line. That wastes so much time that attendees could be shopping or having fun elsewhere. Yes this is no longer a small con and it's growing and will continue to grow, so here's hoping that those organizing it can grow as well!
