Al's Comic shop on Pacific Ave in Stockton, California. Man this place is way cool. I've been coming here since around 1998. I would come to check things out. I mainly came for a magazine called Animerica. It's a magazine that has the latest and greatest Anime movies coming out and Manga. I do like other comics but my favorites are Japanese Manga. Now I take my 10 year old son here. He's strarting to read comics and that's way cool. I highly recommend this comic shop to all. A little update 4/17/18 Here's my story: My 17 year old Son has been wanting to comeback to Al's Comic shop for quite some time. Today I picked him up from school and brought him in. It's been a very long time since we last came here together. Coming in today brought back a lot of good memories. Stopping by with my three children and taking a peek to see what's what. Awesome comic shop. I wish I would have known about this place when I was a kid. They have almost all the recently comics neatly organized on a long shelf. A few are on the counter and the more mature, adult themed books are behind the counter. I mostly come in just to buy a comic i'm into at the moment but i also like to see what else they having going on. Fortunately i have self control and i'm frugal or else i'd buy more stuff. For real some guys and maybe gals too, have weekly boxes or crates where they drop a lot of cabbage on the latest issues. For me, this was my first comic shop. I've been a customer for years and have come to regard Al's as one of my favorite comic shops in the central valley. The shop has a very interesting layout, being a long narrow room with every wall lined with products. I particularly like how Al lays out the all the latest releases on the counter for easy thumbing throughs and selections. A hefty selection of D&D books and various model cars makes the shop all the sweeter, not forgetting the large TCG selections as well. I always found it fascinating that the walls above the shelves were coated with yesteryear posters, all the way up the edge of the high ceiling. In particular, the staff displays detailed knowledge of the comic industry and the clientèle in general, something that can't be taught, rather earned over many years of service and experience. They are great to chit-chat with and are helpful in many ways. I greatly like how they keep watch over the store. That is to say, they aren't giving an overall 'we are watching you' kind of vibe and it aids in feeling safe, something any parent should be grateful for (in the past, the entire area had a small problem with pedophiles trolling the shops and Al's, thankfully, didn't put up with it). If you're looking for a safe, pleasant shopping experience that is complete and affordable, Al's is definitely the place to start looking. read more

Growing up this WAS the comic book store. Others have come and gone. Others have come and merged with gaming with little areas in the back where stinky/smelling fanboys can play Magic. But not here. I remember before I could drive a car, taking the bus from our home in the North side to come here. Then when I could drive parking in the back and walking through the piss smelled alley to get to the entrance. Al is cool. He's a local legend. Growing up he wasn't too friendly. You paid for your books and that was that. In more recent times I remember having a conversation with him about the whole Hollywood movement and more and more comic book movies being made. I've been going to Al's Comic since i was 9 or 10 yrs old and im 40 now..and I always find a great deal. Al and his son Mike are 2 of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Over the years comic stores have come and gone but Al's is still alive and kicking. I used to buy old monster and sci fi model kits from them and while the selections are not like they were back in the early to mid and to some extent the late 90's..theres still a gem or 2 you can get if you come on the right day from that era...BUT lucky enough theres still some reissue kits (DARK SHADOWS, MONSTER SCENES) and superhero and star trek kits you can get on a regular basis. another great thing about the place no annoying magic the gathering or other game playing going on like at Grapevine on thorton rd read more

I don't think we're telling the truth. I've been to this shop multiple times and since it's the only shop in town that sells current books you're forced to come in. Let's start with the customer service, No hi how are you? Or any help looking for something? I don't ever feel welcomed when I've been in. And then, Wednesday's I believe I should be able to find books that come in but no. At times they already sold out by 10am. I understand that I can make a pull list but I'm not being asked to make one nor how can I even have that connection when they don't try. This saddens me because now I have to drive elsewhere to get my books. read more

Al's Comics is by far and away my favorite comic book store of ALL TIME! I have been shopping there since 1982, I think. The decor is still the same. Whenever I set foot in there it's like stepping back in time for me. I think of going there with my cousin who is no longer with us. I remember taking my kid brother there and feeling like a big shot. I remember staying in there for hours when was in high school when I didn't want to go back to my dad's where I was stuck for the weekend. And when I would drop in after having lunch with my Grandad. Ah, the memories. A few years ago my brother and I made a rare trip in togther. We were talking with Al and made mention of a drawing my brother made of Moon Knight. Al used to let the kids put up drawings of their favorite characters. We pulled a plank of perferated press board to one side and there was the drawing placed there in 1985. That reason, and a great selection of titles, keeps me going back for more. LONG LIVE AL! read more

This place is a perennial favorite for good reason -- it's been around forever and it's got a gigantic selection. Want a comic? I don't care what it is, you can find it here. On the downside, it's a cramped store that can be uncomfortable if you're intent on browsing -- I only come in occasionally (so the guy behind the counter doesn't recognize me and apparently that makes me a potential thief), and I don't enjoy the feeling of eyes on me while I look around. I wouldn't bring my son here (if I had one), but I would come in if I were looking for a particular book that I couldn't find elsewhere. read more

They leave you alone if you just want to browse but are always more than willing to help you find something and even chat about random nonsense if that's what you like. This review is loonng overdue. When my family moved to Stockton from the bay area, Al's comics helped a lonely teenager find some comfort in his shop. The shop itself is a throwback a piece of americana, as down to earth as can be but organized very well. There are movie and comics posters, vintage toys and baseball cards around as well as my favorite feature: ARTWORK from kids and aspiring artists. Al and Mike are always warm and never dismissive of kids who want to talk comics and collectibles with them. This place is a treasure.
