It can get pretty busy, but this time we were seated right away and our server was super nice. We even got a window seat! When we first sat down there were only a few raccoons outside, but by the time we finished eating, the area outside the windows was FULL of them. Obviously a huge selling point in this place was how leftover food was fed to the raccoons outside, which was extremely cute, but the food itself was very well-made if we are assessing it from the perspective of fried food. Tenders, chicken, gizzards, and livers were all seasoned very well and sizzling hot when served. Even with my experience having fried chicken in many places, I thought this establishment made theirs very well. My only major criticism, other than the fact that the food options were too oriented on fried food, was that the potato wedges that came with the dinners, albeit huge, burned my hard palate because it was way too hot, so a fair advice for every guest is to please break the potato wedges open so that they can cool down, before eating them. I had to use ketchup, which was cold, to cool down the potato wedges. And of course, one should totally enjoy watching the raccoons eat while consuming the delicious food! I love this place. And it's not because I worship raccoons. This has been a staple in Omaha for years. I remember coming here as a kid with my mom and grandma. The food is great! I highly recommend the fried chicken, that's what they're known for. And the raccoon show, of course. If you're a crazy raccoon/wild animal lover like me, then this place is for you. The words I'd use to describe this place don't come near to how it actually appears. It's a very Masonic feel with the big windows pointed out toward the woods with all the surrounding trees. The brick fire place makes the whole space feel so welcoming. I will indeed say my favorite part would have to be the raccoons. They're so plump and fuzzy! I had the Tenders 4 Piece Dinner which featured large juicy strips that they obviously made on site. No frozen, out of the bag chicken items here--these were actually tender and delicious. My wife had Chicken w/ Onion Rings (the waiter staff likely saved the bones for those hiding raccoons). She enjoyed the 3 smaller pieces of chicken and we took the breast for later. My meal came with Macaroni Salad which was ok (I have a high bar when it comes to that side dish) and potato wedges. The wedges were a good-sized potato cut in fourths, then breaded and fried. Nicely done, but I would have liked some additional seasoning on them. Two of our group eschewed the chicken and ordered Hamburgers. Both of them liked their burgers which tells you that the kitchen can handle more than just chicken. As we left, we noticed the big selection of pies and cakes -- they looked great and we wished we would have saved some room for dessert. Okay I came here exclusively for the raccoons but the fried chicken was top notch. Our waitress was so kind and moved us to a table with prime viewing after overhearing my excitement for the raccoons. There's about 80 wild raccoons that come pay them a visit and we got to see 4 of them (and 2 local cats). The waitress even showed us a pic from when there were 50 of them eating at once! For prime raccoon viewing the strategy is to go after dusk on warmer nights, according to the staff. I didn't get to try everything on the menu but based on raccoon activity the potato wedges were the favorite. However, we didn't manage to see any raccoons as the food pile for them are not full yet (they only feed the raccoons when it's almost full I think). We stopped by Alpine Inn late on a Sunday night and had an absolutely great time! We were the only ones there, which made for a relaxed and enjoyable experience. We ordered the "Dinner" option, and let me tell you--the fried chicken and fries were absolutely delicious! Perfectly crispy and flavorful. The bartender/server was so sweet and kind, making us feel right at home. There was also another gentleman there who was just as friendly--he even gave us his plumbing business card, which we really appreciated! It's little moments like that that make a place feel like a true local gem. Noticed they were in the process of remodeling the women's bathroom, which really shows they care about keeping the place nice for their customers. Love coming here and will definitely be back! It didn't quite live up to the hype. We went for the notorious broasted chicken and a look at the raccoons they feed the scraps to. It gives a true dive bar feel with a chicken cafe shoved in the back. Don't expect anything beyond chicken, fried sides, and a vinegar coleslaw. The menu isn't extensive, but with good chicken you don't have to be. We'd go again if we didn't live 30 minutes away. But for as far out of town as it is, it isn't worth the trip for us. Alpine Inn is a really neat place. Kids love it! Adults love it! It's tucked out of the way, down a wooded, curvy road, just on the edge of town. The building is old, kind of small, and the dark interior decor hasn't been updated since probably 1978. It's a bar/ restaurant, they have a pool table and an outdoor area with picnic tables that allows smoking. They don't have a huge menu, but what they do have is really excellent made to order bone-in fried chicken, huge, lightly breaded homemade potato wedges, and hand-breaded chicken tenders that are all freaking awesome. They do have other things like burgers, livers, gizzards, fried shrimp, etc. but I have honestly never ordered any of them because the bone-in chicken is some of the best around. I regularly crave it. It's cooked to order, so it takes a little while, but it is worth the wait. Also, don't forget to save room for dessert! They have a bunch of pie and cake options, and I have yet to try any that weren't really good. Aside from the amazing fried chicken, the other big draw is, of course, the loads of local raccoons that they have feasting outside every night! They have extra-large windows on the side of the building where they put the leftover chicken bones out so that diners can eat along with the raccoons safely from inside. Outside, they have multiple platforms built so you can watch all of the little guys as they run around, going from pan to pan, taking their chicken, squabbling, socializing, and eating. It's generally much busier at night because that is when the raccoons are awake. FYI, you most likely won't see them during the day because raccoons are nocturnal. I only mention this because I have heard people complain about being there at lunch time and not seeing any raccoons. Also, remember to bring your patience because there can be an hour wait for a table on a busy night, because they do get slam-packed, and then of course, the wait for the food, but it's some of the freshest fried chicken you will ever have. We like to go for lunch because it's way less busy during the day since the little guys aren't out and about till evening. If you have kids, take them! If you have grandparents, take them too! My wife and I, with my brother and his wife, ate lunch here today (5/28/26). My brother & his wife had been here before, but the Alpine Inn was a new experience for my wife and me. This place made some of the best fried chicken we've ever experienced! The chicken livers were also very good, but be forewarned, the gizzards, although fairly tasty, are pretty tough and chewy. Service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is that of an older dive bar, which I prefer, so this is a very casual place. We enjoyed watching the racoons outside as we ate, which I understand is what this place is known for. The only not so great thing about the Alpine Inn is the parking. There are very few parking spaces available, so arrive early, or park along side the road (as many people did). Still, this place gets 5 stars. read more

While visiting Omaha, Nebraska, my husband and I saw Alpine Inn featured in a magazine, and we decided to give it a try. What caught our attention was hearing about the raccoons that come onto the back porch and eat the leftovers scraps. She shared some stories about working there, and I enjoyed talking with her and asking questions. Eve provided great service, and we left her a good tip because she truly deserved it. Unfortunately, the food was a completely different experience. We ordered the fried chicken wings and fries, and my husband ordered the 5 piece chicken dinner with coleslaw and fries. The food took quite a while to arrive, although it was hot when it finally came. The biggest disappointment was the fried chicken, it had absolutely no flavor or seasoning and it was very greasy. The wings were HUGH-I only ate one, and had I known how large they were, I would have ordered only two. My husband also ordered carrot cake for dessert, took one bite, and covered it back up. We asked for boxes to take the food back to the Hotel. My husband eventually threw his food away, and I tried eating one of the wings the next day, hoping it might be better. Unfortunately, it was still the same-very greasy and lacking flavor and seasoning. I'm glad we had the opportunity to experience Alpine Inn and see the raccoons, and Eve was absolutely great, but based on our experience, I would not return for the fried chicken. As I recall my years of rambling around the USA, writing Yelp reviews from the black hills of South Dakota all the way to the dismal swamps of Virginia, I'd probably say I've eaten my fair share of fried chicken, and seen more than my fair share of raccoons. However, I now realize that I have spent the first 26 years of my life seeing nothing but shadows, chained to the walls of my own ignorance. Thankfully, there are people in the world who break free from these shackles and lead society into the light of true knowledge, people who ask the important questions, like the owners of the alpine inn, who so boldly asked "what if you could eat fried chicken and look at a bunch of raccoons at the same time". Walking into the alpine inn is like stepping back into the past, from its cozy roadhouse decor to its patrons, who range from Girl Scouts selling thin mints to rowdy, corn fed, red faced, patrons eating those thin mints. Ordinarily a city slicker like me would feel out of saloon like this, but there is something that brings all of these people and me together, man's second best friend (following alcohol): Ursa Scrutum, the common raccoon. I saddled up to the bar and placed my order, which cost $13.50 for a chicken gizzard special with crinkle cut fries. And I began to wait for dusk, when these cuddly yet nocturnal varmints emerge like so many long forgotten feelings. It may just be the six and half Busch lights I had to drink while waiting for the raccoons talking, but I ended up feeling strangely nostalgic, despite being so far from home. The feeling of anticipation reminded me of being a little kid on Christmas Eve, staying up, unable to sleep, waiting for Santa clause to come and give you exactly what you wanted. Now that im an adult I can't remember what those toys were that made me stay up all night, but I do remember that feeling of waiting. All told I sat at that leather bar seat for about 8 hours, waiting for the sun to set (damn daylight saving time) and waiting to get my first glimpse of a raccoon eating fried chicken. Ultimately, I don't think the magic of the alpine inn is watching a flock of raccoons gorge themselves on platters of fried chicken scraps, laid out for them like a pagan sacrifice at the alter of the trickster god of Native American legend they represent. it's certainly not the bland, dried out fried chicken this place serves. It's that feeling of joy and hope for the future. For most of my life, I've felt like that kit, sitting on that twin bed, waiting for the morning to come and for my real life to begin. But now sitting at this bar somewhere north of Omaha, I wondered what I would say to that ten year old me; if I could explain why I drove three hours round trip on a Saturday night to watch some raccoons eat fried chicken. I wonder if that little boy would even recognize me, or if like the raccoons of the alpine inn, I've grown fat on the excess of fried food, light beer and consumerism. Driving west on I-80 after my meal, chasing the sunset of my youth and terrified to turn my head back and look back at the twilight of middle age bearing down on me like the Nebraska state trooper about to pull me over, I continued to ponder this. That was until a deeper feeling than introspection came over me, the feeling of all that greasy chicken which felt like a raccoon trapped in my small intestine trying to claw his way out. The word raccoon comes from alconquin word meaning one who scratches. The alpine inn scratches an itch you probably didn't know you had. I may have inadvertently got bit by one particularly friendly raccoon on my way out of of the restaurant and am now very itchy. read more

I was driving back to downtown Omaha from Sioux Falls and came here on a whim while I was researching dinner ideas. What drew me to Alpine Inn are the raccoons and how this is a house that turned into a restaurant/bar in a quiet residential neighborhood. I would never find anything like this back home in LA. We got there around 6:30pm and the dining area was almost full. I didn't get a chance to sit at the best state in the house, which are the tables next to the windows where you can watch raccoons and other wildlife. However, you can go and peek over when there's something interesting going on outside. The fried chicken meal was really good. Freshly fried to order so it comes really hot. I also tried the chicken gizzard and liver too. Both tasted fine since it's all fried anyway. This was a cool discovery for me while I was in town. Please note this place is cash only. read more
