The food was okay for me, but if you love greasy smash burgers, you'd probably rate it much higher. One thing I didn't love was the pricing. Prices have increased, and there is an upcharge for paying by credit card that I didn't see mentioned on their website. There are also no fountain drinks--everything is bottled and purchased separately. Service was great. The person cooking and serving us was very friendly and genuinely eager to tell us about the food, the location, and their sister restaurant (Hoochee's River basket). Overall, I'd stop by again if I were already in the area, especially for a casual picnic-style meal with a nice river view. The atmosphere/location is really what makes it unique.

The orders went to the back to get made. Not a big deal. Just a little confusing. The other two members of my party ordered first and moved down the line but there was nobody at the register so they found a seat. By the time I made it down someone was there and we managed to get it figured out. The food took a minute but finally came out. There seemed to be some confusion in getting orders delivered but we eventually got our food. Again, not cafeteria style at all. The food was delivered to our table. All in all it was fine. The food was really pretty good. One the pricey side for what you get but that's everything in Helen. I feel like we might not have caught them on their best day. I'd return.

Even with a long line of people waiting to be seated, nobody seems frustrated or impatient. Everyone seems to understand that it's a small place, there's a process, and it's worth the wait. The atmosphere honestly feels like showing up at Grandma's house for breakfast -- cozy, welcoming, a little busy, and filled with people who are simply happy to be there. One important tip if you're coming specifically for breakfast: GET HERE EARLY! Breakfast is served until 11:30 a.m., but they gauge their cutoff based on how many people are already waiting in line. For example, if it's 10:30 and there are already 15-20 people waiting, they may cut off the breakfast line at that point and let everyone arriving afterward know they'll be serving lunch. So don't wait until 11:15 thinking you still have plenty of time! The food is fresh, and one of my favorite things was watching the bakery items continually come out warm, tray after tray. You can tell things are being made fresh rather than simply sitting around. They have two separate lines -- one for the bakery and another for the café -- which helps keep everything organized. My server, Barbara, was incredibly friendly, pleasant, and welcoming. She made an already wonderful experience that much better. Parking can be a little challenging because of the size and location, but don't let that discourage you. You can drop someone off near the front before parking, and if you arrive early enough, there is additional parking down below. There is also a ramp available for those needing easier accessibility. This is exactly the kind of little place I love discovering while traveling -- great food, friendly people, small-town charm, and an experience that feels personal rather than commercial. I would absolutely recommend Hofer's Bakery & Café to family and friends, and I'd even tell them it's worth going out of their way to visit this charming little town just for the experience. Hofer's is part bakery, part restaurant and part retail. It might sound like a lot but it comes together seamlessly in terms of a customer experience. The food, service and atmosphere are all great. If you're going for breakfast, I'd suggest getting there early. This year I showed up about 20 minutes early and I wasn't the first person there. I did make it into the dinning room on the first round of seating. The line gets long but I'd also say it's worth the wait. They have a great fully covered patio with a fair amount of seating. If you're in town, for whatever reason, I'd strongly suggest swinging by for some food and/or drink.

It seems to be a local favorite because it was pretty busy when we arrived. We got the last spot in the parking lot. The lot is not paved (dirt and mulch); however, if you have a Tesla they have two charging units in the lot. Staff are very friendly and inviting and they do a good job of cleaning and maintaining the coffee station and customer seating areas. Prices are competitive to other businesses in the area, although the coffee is a bit expensive in my opinion, but it is delicious. I ordered an Americano and it was one probably the best one we had on our whole trip. Nancy and I both ordered coffee's, the Americano was $5.75 and her Coffee of the Day was $4.00. For our breakfast we decided on the Bacon Quiche $7.50 and the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Biscuit $6.95 to share. The Quiche was on point; it was much better than the Biscuit Sandwich. Don't get me wrong both items tasted yummy it's just the biscuit was quite dry. Nancy had to ask for Jelly to spruce it up. They didn't charge extra for the jelly and after adding the jelly the sandwich was actually the bomb; something for the menu development team to ponder. Craft beer is $8.99, domestics are $3.89, and they have PBR on draft for $3.50, nice! They also carry a great selection of 500 ml bottle German beer. Their weekly bar menu has a special for each day and the items range between $10-$12, which isn't bad at all. We didn't order any food but the food that was coming out looked great. Staff were friendly and efficient; I would definitely return again if I was ever back in Helen.
