I do not recommend sending your kids here. A lot of immigrant parents who don't know better send their kids here through connections. There are two tutors here: Jenny and James. Both were terrible. They spent so much time expecting you to do the problems or write essays while they sat there on their phones for like 60 minutes. The last 15 minutes were spent reviewing and giving me advice. Jenny spent more time being my therapist than teaching me the material and made me watch YouTube videos instead of just drawing it out and explaining it to me. She should've assigned that as homework and then gone over it afterward. I know more about her entire life story moving from a different country and dropping pre-med than I do about AP Biology. I also later found out that the head director there, Jane, scammed my parents for more money. Right before I submitted my college essays, she asked my parents for hundreds of dollars to help pay the tutors since they supposedly weren't doing well economically. My parents couldn't say no because my college essays were on the line. What disgusting behavior to put parents through, especially when they were already paying thousands for tutoring sessions. I'm livid because I only found out two years later. As for James, he probably spent 90% of the time on his phone and 10% helping me write my college essays. I have evidence as well. He was so unwelcoming and would get annoyed with me if I didn't understand the advice he gave me. I would dread going to his sessions and feel extremely uncomfortable the entire time because he would just sit in front of me behind a glass frame, glancing up from his phone from time to time while I typed away on my laptop. I would never be able to ask follow-up questions because I would be met with so much attitude. read more

Parents, you can trust Alpha Co. This is a place you want to send your kids long term. All the tutors here are very experienced and dedicated. The tutors are mostly recent college graduates who are adaptable with their teaching method to suit your child's educational needs. This is important to me because I've tried other places where tutors were much older and  weren't experienced with the new common core method. Communication is also very easy. They reply to msgs and emails very fast, and they always try their best to accommodate our schedule, which I really appreciate because kids' schedules can be a bit chaotic. Sometimes they offer schedule changes based on upcoming tests...they really go above and beyond! They also have a very strong debate class that competes internationally, so we might try that this summer. It's been 3 years and so far it's been the best school we've tried! read more

알파코의 제니 선생님과 제임스 선생님과 제 두 아이가 함께 공부한 지난 6년동안 너무 감사했습니다. 알파코 선생님들은 아이들에게 진심으로 관심을 가지고 개개인을 존중하며 효과적으로 공부에 자신감을 가지고 성적이 오르도록 지도해 주시는 신뢰할 수 있는 분들입니다. 저와 비슷한 기준으로 학원을 찾고 계시다면 알파코를 강력하게 추천합니다. 제 두 아이의 사례를 나누고 싶습니다. 두 아이 모두 인문/사회/법 쪽에 관심이 있었습니다. 첫째가 고등학교 첫 학기 중간고사를 마치고 Math, English, 그리고 Science과목이 힘들다고 도움을 요청했을 때 foothill길에 있는 학원 5개를 구글해서 한 곳씩 상담을 했습니다. 제 첫 아이는 차분하고 내성적이고 중상위 정도의 성적을 받는 편이었습니다. 낮아진 성적으로 자신감이 많이 떨어진 상태여서 선생님들의 성품이 어떠신지와 1:1 지도가 가능한지가 중요한 기준이었습니다. 학원마다 고개를 젓는 아이와 함께 마지막으로 알파코를 방문했을 때 당시 제인 원장님께서 낙담해 있는 아이에게 용기를 주시며 수학과 과학을 맡으신 제니 선생님과 영어와 논술을 담당하시는 제임스 선생님을 소개해 주셨습니다( 제니 선생님은 UCLA, 제임스 선생님은 USC를 졸업하심). 아이가 대화를 나눠 보더니 선생님들과 공부하고 싶다고해서 바로 등록을 했습니다. 당시 아이가 EC로 시간을 내기 힘들었는데 그걸 고려해 세심하게 스케쥴을 잡아주셨습니다. 시간이 갈수록 아이가 표정이 밝아지고 학기말에는 성적이 원하는 만큼 올라 자신감이 생겼습니다. 그리고 GPA, SAT 그리고 대학별 Essay까지 원장님과 선생님들과 상담하면서 준비를 했고 아이는 자신이 원하는 top 50 사립 대학에 들어갈 수 있었습니다. 둘째는 활발하고 자신감 넘치고 전과목에서 골고루 우수한 성적을 받는 아이였습니다. EC로 고등학교 mock trial 활동에 활발하게 참여하고 있었습니다. 학교 공부는 무난히 잘하고 있었는데 Debate를 좀 더 전문적으로 배워 보고 싶다는 말을 하곤 했습니다. 둘째를 오랜시간 지켜 보시던 제인 원장님과 제임스 선생님께서 아이가 10학년 때 IPPF(International Public Policy Forum)라는 에세이 토론 대회를 준비하는 프로그램을 신설하셨다고 하시며 강력히 추천해 주셨습니다. 이 설명회에 갔는데 아이가 의외로 듣지마자 하고 싶다고 했습니다. 이 competition을 통해 그해의 주제인 NATO의 역할에 대해 6개월여의 시간동안 깊이 있는 연구를 하며 제임스 선생님께 지도를 받았고 준준결승까지 올라가는 결과를 거뒀습니다. 3명이 한 팀으로 일하며 토론을 준비하는 과정에서 아이가 이 분야에 대한 관심과 지식이 날로 확장되는 것을 볼 수 있었습니다. 11학년에 들어서며 John Locke Institute에서주최하는 Essay Competition을 제니 선생님과 제임스 선생님께서 추천해 주셨는데 아이가 설명회에 참석하지마자 또 하고 싶다고 해서 왜냐고 물었습니다. 철학, 정치학, 경제학, 역사학, 법학, 심리학, 그리고 신학등 7개 분야로 주제가 나뉘어져 있고 옥스포드 교수진이 고등학교 학생들의 주제별 학술의 깊이와 창의성을 평가 심사하는 권위있는 대회라는 점이 마음에 든다고 했습니다. 그 중 자기가 관심있던 두 개의 분야를 골라 약 6개월 동안 제임스 선생님 지도 하에 힘들어 하면서 에세이를 썼고 두 편의 에세이가 선정Shortlisted 되어 영국 Oxford University에서 열리는 시상식에 초대를 받았습니다. 학기 중이라 참석을 못했지만 아이가 무척 기뻐했고 무엇보다 이 과정에서 자신이 어떤 분야에 관심이 있는지 알게 되었습니다. 12학년에 대학을 지원할 때에도 제임스 선생님의 통찰력있는 지도로 자신의 에세이에서 어떤 부분을 강화하고 혹은 바꾸어야 하는지 큰 도움을 받았습니다. 아이는 HYP 중 한 곳에 진학하여 두 에세이 대회에서 관심을 가졌던 것을 깊이 공부할 수 있게 되었습니다. 저와 두 아이의 경험이 지금 중요한 선택의 기로에 있는 학부모와 아이의 중요한 결정을 도울 수 있길 바라는 마음으로 이 글을 씁니다. 감사합니다. read more

My aunt asked for my help to find a good tutoring place for my cousin after they tried many after-school programs around Foothill. I have to confess they pretty much tried everything in the area but we finally found a school that was a perfect fit for him. She didn't try this place sooner because the cost sounded a little steep at the beginning, so she tried other "cheaper" places (though the prices are all pretty similar)... but in the end, she figured that saving that $10 was not worth it for the quality that she got from Alpha. Here are some points my aunt and my cousin really appreciate at Alpha Co: 1. They truly CARE about every student. Some schools (which I won't mention the names) that they tried last year, would only care about getting the money and they wouldn't care at all about the students... At Alpha, they teach students based on each one's needs and give attention to every single kid individually. The staffs are very professional in what the do, they help with the student's struggles, and does mentorships for future plans as well (universities, majors, internships, etc) 2. Communication at Alpha Co is amazing. A big problem in other places was that the staff kept on dropping the ball about letting their customers know things like rescheduling classes. Here, everything is easy and quick. The staff here always communicates well with the students and the parents, so my aunt is always telling me that she feels really in the loop when it comes to my cousin's progress, from his successes to his challenges. 3. Teachers are highly qualified committed, and most importantly, CONSISTENT. One of the reasons my cousin left another tutoring center was because of teachers' inconsistent schedules. They were switching teachers every month! Here, the teachers are always the same and my cousin also gets along with all of them. Some days when I would go to pick him up, I would notice that the teachers and staff know him by name. 4. Flexibility in scheduling. They always try their best to accommodate the days/times of classes according to my cousin and aunt's needs or convenience. It was really tough to find a good time that works for my cousin and my aunt due to their busy schedules (aunt working, cousin in other extracurriculars). But, the staff here is very communicative, helpful and patient until they could find the best schedule for him. 5. Grades and overall progress in school. My cousin is doing much better now. It didn't happen drastically though, but it did increase slowly throughout the semester. Although he's great now, my aunt still takes him to Alpha because she thinks it is a much needed academic support until he graduates high school. Plus, she wants him to stay in contact with the professionals here so he can get advice for colleges when he starts applying. Trying different schools was definitely not easy for them, but I can see how much more relaxed and confident my cousin is. My name is Chloe Kim. I was a student there since my freshman year of high school. Now I will be working as an academic tutor during their summer program with elementary students. I am beyond excited!! I can't believe I came this far in my life. It's incredible!! I just recently graduated from Crescenta Valley High School. I will be attending California State University of Long Beach as of 2023. My major is liberal studies in which I will be studying to become a preschool/ T-K teacher. There was a drastic change in his grades at school. We have tried many other tutoring places around the area before but so far we had the best experience here.
