I reached out to Kate after my 12-year-old son took his first ISEE exam and scored sub-optimally on his reading comprehension section and appeared to have missed the mark on his essay (not scored). Kate responded immediately to my request and went out of her way to connect us with a tutor on a very short notice, as our son's second ISEE test was only 3 weeks away. We were very pleased with Amber, our son's tutor, who wasted no time getting to work. She came prepared with reading comprehension passages, which they worked on during every session. When he missed questions, she asked my son why he chose the particular answer and went through all the other answers and circled back to the passage to ensure he understood why he missed the question. In terms of essay writing, she came prepared with high yield personal narrative-type prompts, which they worked on during each session. My son started by outlining his ideas using thought-bubbles emanating from his central thesis. This exercise helped him organize his thoughts and stay focused during his writing. On the actual test day, my son's essay prompt was very similar to one of the prompts Amber had practiced with him and he felt as if he "nailed it." His score on the reading comprehension improved by 2 stanines in less than 3 weeks of practice with Amber! Nearing the start of my senior year in high school, we met at the Grandview Library in Glendale on multiple occasions. After my son took the PSAT, we had an idea of where he needed help before taking the SAT. I did a lot of research on SAT companies including Compass and Varsity Tutors. These were very expensive, but it seemed to me that what you were paying for was the middle man connecting you with tutors. Sure, they "train" and screen tutors, but I thought I could do the screening on my own. So, I decided to cut out the middle man and go directly to find a qualified tutor. I spoke with a lot of tutors before deciding on Kate. She is no nonsense and definitely knows her stuff. She knew exactly what to focus on with my son. The results? In one of my son's "weaker" areas, Reading, he scored a perfect 800 on the SAT. We engaged Kate to help my son take already solid SAT results to the next level, and to say that it worked -- in the course of a relatively small number of tutoring sessions - would be an understatement. Our twin boys had attended Kumon from 1st Grade-5th Grade and we believed it was beneficial and they consistently did well in school. At the start of 6th grade, it was clear that Kumon was no longer addressing the boys deficiencies and they continued to struggle in the transition to middle school. The boys were frustrated and so was Mom who continued to try and make sense of the common core math. I found Kate on Yelp. After a few emails back and forth, I almost went with a more local option since we live in Arcadia and she is primarily based out of Glendale. Her strong reviews and my need for a solution...led us to try her out for a month. It was the best decision we made for the boys. Their grades have steadily improved. More importantly, Mom is no longer frustrated and the boys enjoy school again. From basic tasks like keeping an organized folder to helping with school projects and of course the MATH, she has been so important to the twins success this year. I was very doubtful that 1 hour a week per child would be near enough to achieve significant improvement but I was wrong. We saw immediate improvement in homework/testing scores and grades.
