This establishment is something else. I signed up my son for some math tutoring and the contract price was $66.00 per one hour session once a week till the end of this year. This was a month ago. Well since then my son has only gone to one session and thats because of the tutor he has is no longer a junior tutor but now a "premier" tutor and I should now have to pay the "premier" price for the same service. Well, I said no thank you find me another tutor and they did. Well my son really liked this tutor so we were all happy cuz that in it of itself is a task. Had one session, then I get an email from the school about a tutor leaving junior tutor to premier and to be happy for this person. Like I truly care. So low and behold I get a call saying that my tutor for my son cant tutor him unless I pay more money. I own a plumbing business if my journeyman plumber became a mater plumber in the middle of your job I cant charge you more money. Thats not your expense. So now I reported this to the BBB spoke to my attorney and sure enough this is not the way one conducts business. I came here to ask about tutoring for my daughter for the ISEE. I had never heard of MeriEducation so I was a bit skeptical. The center looks really nice so I decided to walk in and ask a few questions about services for my daughter. I didn't know this but the owner, Joan, is actually the director of the center and she was so personable and explained everything thoroughly-- very thoroughly. I felt as though she cared more about informing me than selling me. She offered my daughter a free one hour session and just to test it out. I told her that I wanted to sign my daughter up and was ready to sit in the contract but she was very adamant that my daughter try it first. Wow. I was really impressed by that. For that reason, I really wanted my daughter to be part of Meri even more. My daughter has been going for three weeks and loves it. She comes home happy and wanting to come back. Just incredible! It is unfortunate that I need to dramatically lower my review of MeriEducation, but it is 100% warranted I believe. Background - we have been a customer for over six months and have tutor sessions twice a week until recently - 1 for Math, another for English. Their #1 math tutor recently left, which was unfortunate, but some turnover is to be expected. We did try new math tutors, but unfortunately they were not the same caliber as Jocelyn. We've easily spent over $1,000 here. Now for the reason for dropping from five to two star review - our block of sessions was up and we received no notification that renewal was due (which we gladly would have done). They simply gave away our slot and made no real effort to recover from this (they offered other slots with the same tutor, but times that wouldn't work for anyone). Impact: they have lost a long standing customer who had raved about this place to anyone who would listen. Not only did they loose future revenue (which would have been significant over the course of the next 8 years), the positive word of mouth references will go away. read more

My grade in math started off as a D- and they helped me raise it to an A-. My younger brother has been going to MeriEducation for the past 1.5 months and so far, it has been an awesome test preparation center with a learning-oriented atmosphere. The tutors and staff genuinely care about the student's studying habits and test scores, with the goal of helping him improve his SAT. In addition, my parents and myself always get follow-up emails on practice tests he takes, which explain possible areas of improvements or weaknesses. I came into the center asked about he prep programs and the manager stopped what she was doing and sat me down to explain everything about the program. She offered a free SAT and ACT test. My daughter took the test and the manager went over everything thoroughly. I spent almost two hours asking questions and she was SO patient. We are using Meri for PSAT test prep. I can't say enough great things about them. I heard about them from another mom. Katie is my point person and she is very knowledgeable and a great communicator. We are using Agnes for English and Joseph for Math. My son (15) was originally reluctant about having the extra work, but all the people there were on my team helping him understand the value of the time and effort. After a few sessions he is actually really enjoying his time there, and sees how it is helping him not only with testing but also in his school work (which he was already doing great in, but now is doing even better). He likes his tutors and respects them. I haven't felt any pressure at all to spend a certain amount of money. Meri has online booking which is convenient for me to look and see what we can do that fits our schedule. I book the tutoring on a week by week basis. I do it a few weeks in advance in order to get times that are best for us. I've been grateful for the time that Katie and Agnes have spent with me and my son explaining how the testing process works and what we need to do to help him earn his highest possible score, since he has certain schools he really wants to get into that are very difficult to gain entrance to. The atmosphere is engaging and comfortable. I feel like Katie gave me a lot of extra time on the phone explaining the process and I really appreciated that. She texts me each week to make sure things are going well. I had high hopes for this place because our oldest daughter went there 6 years ago before they opened in Pasadena. Unfortunately they have become a money driven company that has lost its educational feel. They try to pressure you into buying series of 24 or 32 classes under the pretense that you will save money. Minor detail that they carefully omit during the sales call is that you will only save money if you can get the Senior Tutor or the Intermediate level ones. So when it comes time to schedule your sessions you find out that their ONLY senior tutor for English is not taking on new clients and their Senior Math Tutor is not available for the next few weeks and that they do not have any Intermediate level Tutors for English either so you are left with the Junior Tutors that you are ending paying more money for than if you paid for them as you go. The Coordinator kept on telling me that their was no difference in qualification ls between Senior and Junior. Ok then so why is there a 20 to 30 dollars difference in their hourly rate? I tried to explain to the Coordinator and Joan the founder and owner that it was wrong to mislead clients instead if understanding and apologizing she was very condescending and treated me like a pauper who could not afford their classes. They probably have a lot of clients right now so she feels that she can disrespect a dissatisfied customer. I hope she figures out it is the wrong way to do business at some point. We will be going somewhere else where we might pay more but get the service we deserve. read more
