Colledge was the best decision for us! We were referred to Jenny at Colledge by a friend that used their services for their oldest daughter. My friend told me that Colledge really "took the stress out of the whole college application process". That is what we wanted! Our daughter was in the 10th grade and we wanted to try Colledge out to see how the program worked with my child, who was then applying to summer programs. My daughter was interested in an intensive writing program. We met with Jenny and Kelsey who were so communicative and supportive. Kelsey worked with my daughter to apply to three summer programs and she ended up with her first choice in New York City! We met again with Jenny again early in my daughter's junior year for a short family meeting to learn how Colledge helps navigate students and parents through the complex college process. Jenny reviewed my daughter's transcript and activities and also explained that Colledge not only wants to help your child get into college, but into the "right college" for the child! They work vey hard to get to know your child, what their interests are, what they might want to study, whether they love urban or rural, suburban. Big or small schools? Sports? Our daughter was in the 9th grade and we had heard from many people to start preparing her early. We initially thought that the 9th grade was too early, but soon found out that it was the PERFECT time to start for us. We met with Jenny for a short briefing on what they do and how they help navigate students and parents through the complex college process. After hearing the benefits of what they do, we were convinced. There was no sales pitch... just great advice. We knew we wanted to be part of the program. I started searching for college counselling service from Yelp and was drawn to Colledge by its good reviews. We went to college admission night twice at the local high school and attended various seminars on many topics. I had pretty good understanding of the whole process in terms of what colleges are looking for from an application. Using a college counselling company is really for a peace of mind and better track the process in every step along the way. Should it cost that much of money? it's all depends on how much the perceived value is to you. In another words, it's a mental game. There is no guarantee that your kids will end up in a better school using a college prep service. Plus you cannot compare the quality of the service since you don't get the chance to try another one. It's a very margin business in my opinion. Colledge charges $350 for the initial meeting with Jenny. I have talked to 5-6 companies by the time I wrote this review. They are the only one charges for the initial meeting. I did sign up. Because of the perfect reviews on Yelp. Because I talked to two parents that used their services and lived in my city. Both parents are happy about Colledge. The meeting lasted one hour. It's professional and formal. For 40 mins I was outside, they talked only to my son. I was part of last 20 min. I asked what's make Colledge stand out among peers. how they usually work with students. what's the difference of their different packages. One thing they didn't give me a clear answer id when I asked what's their 2018 results and 2019 early decision results. They say it's privacy issue and they cannot release that information. They vaguely said 85% of their students got into their first choice of schools. After the meeting, I asked my son what's the takeaway. He cannot think of anything specific. Everything is he had already knew. I'm somewhat disappointed. It took me quite some effort to decide to go for an initial consultation with $350. I would hope to get something out of it. It does have some useful information, but it serves more of a advocate for their service and to get new clients instead of giving you very personalized advice targeting the situation of your kid's academic, extracurricular activities and the desired college and major. I sent my kid's transcript, activity list, SAT score in advance before the meeting and hope the money I spent will yield anything. But I got very general, under- prepared answer that is very general common sense. I didn't use their full service so I cannot say anything in that regard. But from the $250 initial meeting, I think it's overrated. I did talked to quite a few other college prep companies, some are remote in east coast and bay area. Depends on the different business model, some have counselor graduated from top school and in the field you want to study. Some have subject experts in special area to help with the activities/project/research planning. Some are new company setup by Harvard graduates to tap into this lucrative area. Some are somewhat bigger with many students admitted to top 20 schools. They all have their own advantages but none of them charge money for initial meeting even some meetings are with the owner/main counselor. BTW, the two parents that were Colledge past clients I talked to are obviously happy. Their kids went to colleges of their choice. The main takeaway from my talk with them is that if your kids want to go to small liberal art school, with low teacher-student ratio, and possibly scholarship, Colledge will be very helpful. The admission will be definitely less competitive and everyone is happy in the end. In that sense, Colledge does a very good job in adjusting your expectation and helping the kids chose the right school for them. But my kid scored 1550 in SAT without any preparation. Colledge took the stress out of applying for college. Jenny and her staff have a terrific program which not only helps your student stay on top of applications, but also guides your student in learning what is the best college match for them. All without mom and dad looking over the shoulder and tracking deadlines. Part of this process is helping your child learn about themselves; which our daughter really did. All so positive. Here are some great things about Jenny and her team. Super organized: I already said this. They have a web-based interface which is very engaging for younger folks. On top of deadlines: Our daughter's common app was pretty much finished before she started her senior year; awesome! Academic guidance: Jenny understands college admissions and was able to advise our daughter about what classes to take senior year; Open minded: The Ivy League was not an option for our girl. That didn't bother Jenny in the least. She recognized our daughter's considerable academic strengths and helped her find a terrific fit. You do not have to be a super star 4.99999 student for Jenny to love and appreciate you! Great listener: Jenny listened to our daughter and to us; seemingly endlessly -- and incorporated our opinions into the plan Brave: Jenny suggested options we would not have considered and also encouraged our daughter to be herself in her applications. Results: Our daughter was admitted to almost every school to which she applied and is attending a wonderful university in August. Kind: Jenny gets it. She knows this is stressful and hard and all her staff do. Our daughter always wanted to work for Jenny and came home with a smile on her face. I honestly cannot say enough about the incredible team at Colledge. We decided to meet with Jenny after receiving a wonderful recommendation from an acquaintance. After our first meeting, it was clear that Colledge was the place for our son. Jenny is one of a kind - warm, compassionate, knowledgeable and extremely well-qualified. Our son planned all of his own visits with his team at Colledge. At first, he was procrastinating, and not meeting deadlines, and even missing some meetings. The team worked together with him to get him on track, and helped him take ownership over the whole process. The transformation that we saw was amazing. Soon, all deadlines were met, meetings became a priority, and he turned in all of his applications before the deadline date (most of them were in at the early admission deadline). While many of his friends were scrambling to meet deadlines, he was sitting back with confidence, because he knew that things were in control. The colleges that he applied to were thoughtfully researched by the team, along with my son, to find the right fit. In choosing the college list, there were many discussions about area of interest (proposed major), personality and study techniques, positive environment, class size, school spirit and more. The essay writing portion of the program was just right. There were options of group workshops in addition to the one-on-one sessions, and our son preferred the one-on-one approach. The essay feedback from James and Ashley was invaluable. They were truly a team that complemented one another. The structure and rhythm of the whole program made the process so much less stressful, and transformed our son along the way. He has been accepted to 9 colleges!! He is just finishing up his college tours, and will make his final decision in less than a week. Honestly, he can't go wrong with any of the choices. A very long overdue review! I first visited Colledge about a year ago, the summer before senior year. I'm the youngest of three siblings, so when I finally came to a realization that college applications were quickly approaching, I knew this was going to be a rough few months. I asked my parents to schedule a meeting with Jenny. My family knew Jenny after previously working with my sister a few years ago (and getting her into her top school!), but I had no idea what to expect. I'm a pretty reserved person, and didn't really know how I would feel about sharing my personal experiences with other people. During the initial meeting, Jenny explained the college process to me. She took in my interests and matched me with members of her team. My college consultant was Arman, and my essay consultant was Kelsey. Arman guided me through my deathly nerve-wracking college interviews. Sitting alone in a room with an admissions officer was the last thing I would be comfortable with, but mock interviews really helped. I knew exactly what to expect, and walked out feeling confident, knowing I had nailed it. Kelsey did a great job with helping me with my essays without writing them for me. There were times where I needed a push to get my writing to a deeper level, and she was so patient and really brought out ideas and thoughts in me. I also highly suggest the essay bootcamps! Waking up early on a Saturday morning was difficult, but the immediate feedback is so beneficial. This process eased most of the stress of college application season. The consultants work together and plan deadlines for each of your applications, taking into account your hectic senior year and extracurricular activities. I ended up being accepted into my first choice school, in addition to acceptances to other colleges and scholarship offers. Colledge is a wonderful service, and I highly recommend it to everyone for the following reasons. Small team approach: Each student is assigned 2 counselors: an overall application advisor, as well as a writing specialist, with Jenny overseeing all three teams. I personally felt like this was a great approach because it created clear spaces where I could focus solely on writing or solely on application processes. Additionally, the small teams of counselors always have meetings on their own time, so I always felt that everyone on my team was up to date on my progress and was ready to support me in every step. Comfortable Workspace: The essay bootcamps that Colledge holds were incredibly helpful. Starting in July all the way until November, Colledge holds 3 hour long essay bootcamps where students are able to work at Colledge with 3 essay specialists on duty throughout the session ready to give any holistic advice, diction recommendations, or being sounding boards for ideas. I cannot emphasize enough how helpful it is to have a space outside of my home where I can work productively with the help of trained professionals. At these bootcamps I was able to finish a rough draft of a new essay each time I went. Interview Practice: Leading up to the months when interviews begin, students are able to prepare with their application advisor and hold mock interviews. I found this helpful for fixing small mistakes such as saying "um" too much, not thinking through a question enough before answering, having bad posture, etc. It also served the purpose of soothing my nerves before a real interview because it made me realize that these interviews are an inherently human part of the process and let me figure out my style in connecting with people. General advice: Instead of having to do countless hours of research on my own, I was able to send any questions I had regarding the application process to my counselors and receive very prompt feedback. TLDR: I would recommend Colledge if you really desire a space outside of your home to work on your application with professionals who are supportive, motivational, encouraging, and incredibly prompt in feedback and communication. read more

I was dreading the college application process with my son. While we had done some college hunting and research, he was not fully engaged in the process. Fortunately at the end of his junior year, I was able to convince him to attend a free seminar held by Colledge on how to utilize the summer months to write college essays. I was immediately impressed with Jenny and my son seemed open to working with someone on his applications. We set up a meeting and jumped on board. I wish we would have signed up with Colledge earlier in the process, but I am so happy we moved forward when we did. Jenny met with my son and parents separately. She listened closely to what we had to say, eased our concerns, and tailored the program based on our son's input and what we discussed. Jenny turned out to always be accessible, especially when important last minute issues came up. She was an excellent resource for us - much more so than our son's guidance counselor at school. The group/team approach was excellent. Jeff was our son's college consultant and Lee Ann was his essay consultant. Jeff turned out to be a perfect match for our son. He was a motivator and leader, but was a friend as well. Lee Ann offered suggestions on how to improve his essay writing without making him feel small. Our son felt heard and understood. He gained confidence in himself and improved his writing skills. The team eased his anxiety about the college application process and made him feel good about what was ahead. Our son took advantage of the essay boot camps during the summer and fall. While he never looked forward to them, he did say it was great to have a place to just focus on the essays and to get them done early, way before the deadlines. He completed all of his essays (Common App and supplementals) at the boot camps. Our son was never stressed about finishing his essay work and was happy he could share his writing with people who could help him make it the best it could be. It was gratifying as a parent to see our child take ownership of the process, follow the schedule he and his team created, work ahead of deadlines, and build his confidence. I have two children who are currently being advised by the team at Colledge. My son is a sophomore and my daughter, a senior. My children have very different personalities, skills, interests and talents and Jenny Umhofer has put together a team that meets their individual needs in a thoughtful, thorough way. This drove the entire process from school selection to essay development. Our daughter was interested in a small, academically challenging liberal arts environment where she could also play soccer. Jenny and Ashley helped us to compile a strong list of target schools that fit her criteria and gave suggestions about a few schools we hadn't originally considered (but were a great fit). When it came to writing application essays, James and Ashley worked with our daughter to develop a strong personal statement that highlighted her strengths and told a unique story. For supplemental essays they helped her to remain focused on answering the prompts with specifics. The admissions process can be very stressful. In the end, our daughter gained admission to her "first choice" school. I can't say enough about our experience with Jenny and her team in working with our daughter on the college application process. As this was our first pass at getting a kid into college and we were a little behind schedule when we commenced this process, Jenny was instrumental in getting us up to speed, developing a plan and reassuring us that we would be just fine! Jenny and the rest of the Colledge team excelled at...... Communication - Email communication is concise and informative. Further, we never felt we were out of communication, nor drowning in unnecessary correspondence. Computer Interface - The website and dashboard utilized is fantastic. It is highly functional, user friendly and contains informative links that were often used. Calendar and planning - A macro calendar was developed quickly, giving a clear overview of timelines, deadlines and time management needs. Email updates regarding key dates, meeting content etc. were received regularly, keeping the plan on track. Strategy - There is a lot more to this process then knowing what to do when. Understanding the admissions process and the unique preferences / requirements of the target schools was huge. Further, having a strategy for early versus regular applications was equally important. Jenny's strength in this area was one of many difference makers. Essay Bootcamp - The essays are critical and the difference between our daughter's early essays and those she ultimately submitted was night and day. Essay bootcamps are held regularly and were a great help in getting the essays to the finished product. Jenny and her team will not write these essays; rather they provide the tools and guidance to maximize the potential of the essay writer. Availability - I remain amazed at just how much time our daughter was able spend with the Colledge team. Whether regularly scheduled meetings, planned group sessions, boot camps, "office hours" or the occasional 5 alarm fire - Jenny and her team were always available. Jenny only takes on a certain number of students at a time, ensuring that availabllity remains dependable. Results - Our daughter has not heard from all of her schools yet but has been accepted at all schools applied to thus far - leaving us very optimistic for the remaining applications. Colledge is an outstanding service, stellar in every way. I'm the mother of two children, both with completely different personalities and learning styles. Even though my daughter is already at college, I wish I'd known about Colledge for her, because of the sense of agency and ownership that Colledge has given my son. My husband had heard of Colledge from a friend who works in NeuroPsych at UCLA who said Jenny was the absolute best in the business. My son has learning differences and is prone to anxiety. He came to Colledge with wobbly confidence, unsure where he would get in, even if he would get in, anywhere. He thought that, despite being a hard-working kid with good grades and decent ACT scores, he might never be college-bound. College is so competitive today that he, a kid who isn't the top tier kind of student because of his LD, is not your cookie-cutter kind of student. Jenny, Seth and Lee Ann took what could have been the most stressful time of my son's life and turned it into a positive, character-building, confidence-building experience. They helped my son find his "best fit" colleges and feel confident applying to them. He decided to apply to many schools Early Action to increase his chances of admission. Their essay feedback was beyond AMAZING with editorial suggestions and help with understanding the fundamentals of a good supplemental essay--hard when you're writing one after another for so many schools. In addition to that, Colledge has a wonderful, streamlined organizational system that really kept my son (and me) on track to initially help him lay out different schools he might be interested in and compare them in a chart-like fashion and later to remind him of application deadlines. Mock interview prep work made all the difference; his interview style took off and went from a lot of throat-clearing, (and much to my chagrin, saying "like" and "cool" a lot!) to feeling confident about answering his interviewer's questions, expressing his own strengths and weaknesses when asked and talking clearly and intelligently about what he was seeking in a school, and why he was interested in a certain major. Perhaps most important of all, Jenny and Seth and team are warm, kind, and responsive, which meant that my son looked forward to his appointments and to working with them. Navigating through the whole college application process can be intimidating, overwhelming and downright terrifying, for kids and parents alike. I highly recommend Colledge to all high school students. Parents cannot help with this stuff the way an outside service can, and a school college counselor simply cannot provide the individual attention that helps the applicant put their very best foot forward. My son started working with them in the summer after his junior year but earlier might be good, too. The impact Colledge has had on my son's life is enormous. What a massive relief it was to know that Jasper was working with the whole team at Colledge and that everything would be all right. And it was!
