Yesterday, I went on the Zippy's app and ordered the strawberry gelatin cream pie and 2 apple napples for my mom. It's super convenient to order through the app because I believe the pick up time is only 15 minutes from when the time you order. You can also choose what time you want to pick it up. Another tip I suggest is, if you don't want to order the whole pie and just want to have a slice. I think you can just buy it by the slice at either the restaurant side or at the counter. The strawberry pie is so wonderful! I think they used to have it on their permanent menu years ago, but maybe because it wasn't as popular, they took it out? That's what I'm assuming. I love jello and pie so this is the best of both worlds! The crust is a little buttery, and I think there is also a layer of chocolate, then it's filled with a custard cream, topped with a layer of strawberry jello and the edges has a whipped cream. OMG, so heavenly! I hope you'll try it and enjoy it as much as me.

The one-star review started out because I purchased two bakery items: a donut and a cake and both items had foreign material in it: a hair on the donut and a plastic/nylon or other strand of scrub brush or equipment in the cake. I would have just let the hair on the donut go, because in all my years of eating, there has been a hair, here or there. I have found pretty disgusting things worse than hairs in my food, so I was ready to let it go, but then my son found what appeared to be a plastic strand in his cake, so it was time to take action. I didn't want to be out $16 for donuts and a cake we didn't want to eat. I called the Napolean's Bakery location in the evening and spoke to a really nice manager who was really apologetic about the whole thing. He was very sorry and offered me complimentary items for the hassle of having to come back to the store to return the items, but I said there was no need, I just wanted my money back. I told him I'd be coming back the next day with the items, so they can see for themselves what I've found (I took photos but decided to let Napolean Bakery figure it out, so I've taken them down voluntarily). The next day I took the products back to the same store and had to deal with different manager who was not well-versed in customer service. I won't go into detail here but let's say it was not a pleasant experience at all and I left feeling perturbed. I got an email from two managers asking me about my experience so I let them know what transpired, from the time I found the things in my baked products to the service I got, and they were concerned and addressed some of the problems. I knew then Zippy's/Napolean Bakery takes their Yelp reviews and things like this seriously. I'm upping my review rating here from a one-star (eeks! I think not!) to a three-star (A-OK) solely based on the fact that Napolean's Bakery reached out to me and they really were concerned. I would have thought a company so huge that has cornered the local market couldn't be concerned with just one complaint, but they do take all matters seriously and that's all right in my book.

Then another mom-and-pop shoo in National City, Ching's Hopia opened up and is still going strong. Some time in between, my Lolo (grandpa) brought some hopia baboy straight from the Philippines...Eng Bee Tin brand hopia baboy, to be exact. Yes, it's the same famous family brand in Manila's Chinatown, Binondo. So yeah, hopia has been a childhood favorite of mine and Eng Bee Tin and Ching's have ruined hopia for me lol! You'll never see me buy pre-packaged, store-bought hopia! I missed out on Ching's during my last San Diego visit, so I really wanted to try Manny's Bakeshop's ube hopia. The interior is no frills and the displays never look packed in the afternoon. Maybe they have more selection in the morning? A bag of 11 pieces of ube hopia costs $5 flat. Minimum $10 purchase is required to pay by card, but luckily, I had enough cash with me. To my surprise, Manny's ube hopia were pretty good. They have faint ube flavor, but still flaky, pretty moist, and not too sweet. I saw someone commented on the lack of ube flavor, but I thought this was comparable to Ching's but slightly smaller. I've never tried Eng Bee Tin's ube hopia and I heard they invented ube hopia to satisfy the Filipino market? Maybe Eng Bee Tin's is bursting with flavor, but until I can somehow visit Manila Chinatown or San Diego, I'm content with Manny's ube hopia. Manny's also has a stall inside Waipahu Festival Marketplace. I've consistently seen hopia there as well.

I've always wanted to come the these anniversary specials. I was finally able to. I arrived at 8am the line long as expected. Shortly after one of their helpers came around and handed boxes out to put our pastries in. Which was nice to get in advance. They also went around and passed out ice cold water. My mission was to get a few jumbo (filled with a good amount of red bean my favorite.) and Hokkaido Anpan's which I did. It was freshly baked, warm and delicious! If you're an Anpan connoisseur.
