Aloha Poke is the absolute best. I went once and immediately went back the next day. The fish is super fresh, the portions are generous, and every bowl is perfectly balanced. Nothing mushy, nothing drowning in sauce. Just clean, flavorful poke done right. It's also one of those meals that somehow fills you up without making you feel heavy, which is rare and appreciated. The staff is friendly and it's exactly the kind of spot you want in Dupont for a quick but legit meal. If you're even thinking about poke, stop thinking and go here. I'll be back... a lot. read more

They offer great portions with this place. This is one of those build-your-own-bowls type of situations so the proteins come premarinated in a simple house soy blend (to differentiate from batch marinated Hawaiian style poke). I opted to get all the toppings and it created such a great and varied texture and flavor for each bite. Crispy onions are a must in BYOB poke spots, it adds a great flavor when you're making your own bowl. I would recommend asking if you can mix certain sauces to your preference. I found the volcano sauce to be just a creamy sauce that kind of disappears in the bowl, something on the soy-acidic side might stand out better. One of my gripes about the DC food scene is that many sorts of foods are reflected but few places are the best representation of a particular type of food. So alas DC residents are offered a large selection of (generally) average food. I think Aloha Poke is a good example of what I mean. I'm glad it exists, as it does add variety for diners in the area. On a DC scale I would give it four stars, but on an objective scale that considers what poke is and could be, it's a solid three or possibly even a two. This spot is a pick-up spot. There's really no place to sit and eat. That's fine. The menu is confusing though, because they always seem to have seasonal items or limited-time-only dishes so it can be frustrating to order off the menu, only to see a random flyer placed somewhere after you've ordered for another item you might have considered. On the standard menu they have some three or four poke bowls and also the option to build your own. Off menu, I've seen things like crab rangoons, a California roll bowl for a special price, and a Philly roll bowl. These items are "off menu" as you'd only know about them if you look around the shop for adverts. As for the food, it's decent. Not horrible, but really doesn't hit the spot when I'm craving poke. Put differently, the poke here can't compare to what you'd get in Hawaii or say, California. The options for what you can have in a bowl are limited compared to other places. That's a business decision. The owners have to navigate rents and supply chains, so I won't fault them for their decisions on this matter. I will say though, that I feel the food here tends to be overly soggy. I like sauce in my food. I'll probably order more sauce than the average person. But the mayo and sauces that typically go into a poke bowl have different consistencies and when done right my bowl doesn't feel wet or "soupy." But when I eat here it tends to be just that. I feel the sauces are a bit too liquid rather than creamy. In any event, I will continue to go here, mainly for the variety and because it's one of the few restaurants in the area that in a member of the Dining Rewards Network, where I can also get airline miles in addition to my regular credit card miles for eating here. I hope they improve their offerings. But even if they don't, I suppose I'll keep coming. read more

The food is delicious and the raw fish is fresh and not overly marinated. One feedback on the food is to caramelize the onion to bring out the flavor of the fish instead of using it raw. I like how they have 3 sizes available to allow customers to choose based on their appetite of the day! There's also alternatives to healthy options like brown rice, cauliflower rice and tofu. Not good. I got Aloha Poke to go last week and it made a disappointing lunch. I got the large poke bowl size with white rice & mixed greens as my base. I doubled up on salmon and added on ahi tuna (marinated with sesame and shoyu). I topped it with seaweed, edamame, scallions, black sesame, and avocado, drizzled with spicy aioli sauce. The fish wasn't very fresh and flavorless, especially the tuna. I had to push myself to eat it (when I typically love eating raw fish). I didn't like how thick the scallions were cut (1 cm pieces). Toppings were just OK. The most disappointing part was the rice, which was clumpy and hard, some pieces with much more vinegar than others. Very unbalanced and unappetizing. Love that you can get spicy topping options like jalapeños and also fruit options like mango and pineapple, not all places do that. Sauces are generally very good, I prefer the samurai and wasabi mixed together. Staff are very nice and friendly, especially the owner who is sometimes there. Online ordering option is great and they are always on time, which is helpful when I'm stepping out of the office for a quick lunch pickup. The restaurant itself is a pickup only style, which is fine with me for what I need. When the weather is nicer there's outdoor seating that people often use. Overall this is my go to spot for poke, even though there are other options closer to my office. I've been here many times over the last year, so I can say that the preceding is consistently true. Amazing service and great value at this poke spot in Dupont! The bowls are kind of shallow so I think they put less of the base (rice/greens) than other poke places, but I actually preferred that and found that the Big size was perfectly filling, and for less than $13 I think it's the cheapest build-your-own poke, at least in the Downtown area. Also, they do NOT skimp on the toppings at all - my bowl was so full I couldn't even mix it at first. The service was great as well - I had initially ordered a scoop of marinated tuna, but since they were out/didn't have any, my server gave me an extra scoop of protein on the house. Great spot for delicious and fresh poke bowls with decent portions and quick, friendly service! I've been to Aloha Poke an almost embarrassing number of times in the last few months, but it's genuinely one of the best poke spots in DC (especially in the Dupont / downtown area). The bowls do look a tad small, but I think it's just their shape -- they're quite sizeable (18 oz for the large and 24 oz for the kahuna) and are perfect for a lighter dinner or lunch. Although Aloha Poke has a fair share of house bowls, I'm a huge sucker for a build-your-own experience, and Aloha provides a wide selection of toppings (and you can add as many as you would like), which amplifies the customization. It's also great for folks with dietary restrictions, especially since they do a great job of marking the various allergens in each ingredient and sauce on their website, as well as whether something is gluten-free or vegan. One note is that they frequently run out of a few ingredients (i.e., zucchini noodles, naked tuna), so you might not always be able to get exactly what you want, but there's usually a good enough substitute that you can still make a delicious bowl! I have also noticed that they like to add a lot of sauce to the bowls. Sometimes if I forget to ask for the sauce on the side, I end up pouring out a good couple of tablespoons of sauce, especially if I've opted for a more liquidy sauce rather than a mayo-based one. It tends to not be a huge problem for mixed greens, but every other base really soaks up the sauces and gets oversaturated and oversalted. The staff is super kind and speedy, and I'm always in and out within a few minutes; if I decide to get it delivered, Aloha Poke is also always one of the fastest restaurants on Uber Eats. read more

When I walked in, I noticed the place is very small. Only big enough for to go orders, no dining in. When I got home, I noticed that they STUFFED my bowl! It was jam packed! I really appreciate that. I feel like I got my monies worth. I enjoyed my bowl overall. The avocado was browning which I hate but understand and the rice was a little...cold? I usually dine in at Aloha and never experienced this issue. Regardless, this shouldn't have been an issue. I got a medium sized build your own bowl with 2 scoops of salmon and there was barely any fish in my bowl. There was a lots of base (rice and zucchini noodles) and toppings, which would have been nice if I had more fish. Sauces (samurai and ponzu) were very good though! Picked up poke from here. The inside of the shop is not clean. The bowl prep station doesn't span across customer standing space like other build-your-own poke bowl places, Chipotle, Cava, etc. You go in and if you order a custom bowl, tell them what you want and they make it in the back. You can't see the ingredients through a glass window to decide if you want it in your bowl which is important to me in a poke place because I won't get an ingredient in my bowl if it doesn't look fresh or good through the window, especially fish. The cuts of salmon in my bowl were not great. The marinated fish option isn't actually marinated, I watched the worker put on the marinade in the back when I ordered. The rice is not fresh and appears to be made once at the beginning of the day, or the previous day, and stored in a big plastic container. The crunch ingredient is actually fried garlic, and the flavor is really strong and overpowering-- do not recommend. Also don't like how mango is a premium topping here. With that said, the vegetables I got in my bowl-- cucumber, Maui onion, edamame, scallions were fresh. read more
