Aloha Hula is a Polynesian cultural dance school. Hula and 'Ori Tahiti are the two main cultural dances taught to all students. Students can start at the age of 5. Classes are spread throughout the week. Based on Age and/or Skill level, you will be placed in a specific class on a specific day. Aloha Hula also competes in 'Ori Tahiti competitions throughout the year. One of the top competition groups in Southern California. Beginners are on Monday's at 6pm. When the instructors feel that you are ready to move beyond the basics, they graduate you to a more experienced class. If you don't want to graduate, you are more than welcome to stay in Beginners. If you want to graduate but you can't join the more experienced classes then unfortunately you have to stay in Beginners or stop attending. The school's schedule has been the same for the 10+ years it's been open. The schedule isn't going to change to accommodate one person. Tuition is due at the beginning of the month. If you don't turn it in on time there is a late fee. As it is with almost every business in existence, you are expected to turn in the exact correct amount of tuition you must pay ONCE a month. They don't accept credit cards but lots of small family owned dance schools don't accept credit cards. Not a big deal to pay tuition in cash when it's only ONCE a month. Classes vary in size. They can be as small as 15 dancers to as a big as 36 dancers. Most Polynesian cultural dances are GROUP dances not Solos. You learn to dance as a unified group. Some of the larger classes have had students who have been dancing for YEARS. Dancing in big groups is part of the culture. And the fact that so many dancers have been dancing with Aloha Hula for 10+ years speaks to how well run the studio is. The floors can leave your feet dirty, sure. There are about 200+ students walking in and out of that studio weekly. That's not including the parents who also go in and out. They sweep and mop the floors consistently but with that much foot traffic the floors still end up a little dirty. Even with people taking off their shoes to walk across the dance floor. The students have learned to adjust whether it's bringing wipes to class to clean their feet afterwards or simply washing your feet when you get home after spending an hour in class getting sweaty. A minor inconvenience with a majorly easy solution. There are people who smoke but they always smoke away from the back door either in another parking lot or around the corner of the building. Always away from the kids. It hasn't been a problem. In reading some of the One Star reviews, a lot of the complaints are petty at best. You're not there to be treated like you're on an island resort with some backwards version of "ALOHA" -- you're there to LEARN and RESPECT the history of the Polynesian people. It's a cultural practice. As the instructors themselves are Polynesian, they take the representation of their culture seriously. It's mind blowing to say the teachers have no "aloha" cause someone isn't getting their way. You aren't paying to do whatever you want with someone else's culture. And just because you are paying doesn't mean you are entitled to be accommodated. Any Polynesian cultural dance school will behave in the same way. The teachers are strict. The classes are full. I have been dancing here for around a year and half. Towards the end of college I wanted to start an hobby to keep me fit and active. Aloha Hula is am amazing studio. I started in a beginning class and within a few months moved up, I felt so accomplished. Within the first year I was even part of a performance, which really bonded me with my fellow hula sisters. If you like to breath second hand cigarette smoke, this is the place for you. The few times I have taken my daughter to hula class, I am always slapped in the face by the staff, owners, management and parents who have a full on smoke out in the parking lot. The smokers have no regard for the health of the young lungs that have to walk through to get to and from class. I can't even stay in the parking lot to work in my car while I wait. The smoke is continuous, strong and disgusting. I feel like I am in some cheap Vegas casino when I am waiting for my daughter. I'm only saying something now because i thought it was just a random, coincidence that they all smoke cigs, at the same time, for the duration of the class. But I see (smell) now that this is an everyday event. I would ask you to please stop or move farther away from the class and kids and non smokers but I already know you won't. If your own health doesn't concern you, why would anyone else's? The hula dance class is alright. read more

This is a wonderfully run dance studio full of that island warmth and aloha spirit! I was raised in the islands and I can tell you that I feel like home here. Pros: They are the only Hula studio in West Valley. So if you're in the area, they are the only option. One of the instructors is great. Youngest son I think. Cons: They don't accept credit cards. The payment system is antiquated. You write your name in an envelope, put your cash and give to them before the first class of each month. They only accept cash. It's very inconvenient and takes up to 10 minutes of the 50 minute class as they sort the payments out. Why not let people pay by credit card in advance? They don't clean the floors after each class. Floor is icky and you have to dance barefoot (of course). Please clean it. It doesn't take much to run a swifter. Very unhealthy. They move you to another class when you improve. You don't have a choice. If the class is another day/time, then you have to accommodate your schedule if you want to continue. They are supposed to have one hour workout classes during the weekends but it is not consistent. I showed up a couple of times only to find the place close. No warning or sign. You pay for the month but if there are 5 weeks in the month, they will cancel one class. It is up the owner's discretion which week she will cancel. The owner is not nice. The first time she taught our class, she did not smile at all. Like we were such an inconvenience to her. She talks to a class full of adults like we were kids - domineering and condescending. I left that class thinking, I don't pay this woman to watch her yell and be rude to her customers. She makes it clear to everyone that she runs the show. The Good: They teach you the Hula dancing moves The Bad: The classes are over crowded, everyone bumps into each other. They accept cash only- which would be fine but they don't have change. What kind of business expects people to bring exact change every month? The floors are disgusting! I understand that you need to take your shoes off but it would be nice if they actually cleaned their floors because I went home with black dirty feet. So gross. I've danced with Aloha Hula for about 2 years give or take; participated in Ho'ike 2012 and 2013 (annual show). Lyn-Del is a great teacher of Hawaiian dance. She pushes you to learn proper form and teaches the story and feelings behind each dance. Her sons help teach and they are wonderful, too. This is a family oriented studio. Everyone is very friendly; they welcome new dancers and want to spread a little aloha. Come in and don't be shy! There is street parking in front of the studio along Chatsworth Street, but it can get crowded as there is a neighboring ballet/tap studio. There is a small parking area behind the building accessible through the alley way, too. The bottom line - come here if you are interested in learning Polynesian culture and dance. But Aloha Hula will give you so much more on top of that: you'll become a part of a hula family, make memories, exercise and have fun. In response to another review: Yes, there are many dancers in the beginning class, but isn't that a good sign? It's popular for a reason. If you don't like learning in a group, they offer private lessons. The studio is tidy and if it's ever "dirty" its only as much as to be expected with all the foot traffic. Each class pitches in and cleans up after themselves. Tuition is paid monthly and they accept cash or check. Class times vary depending on your dance level, and that can't be determined immediately. Such a great teacher and it's cool that they go to competitions of all ages. The people involved seem to be having a lot of fun. I've been going for about a month and I've been having a lot fun. It get increasingly harder and "duck" walks are definitely NOT my favorite. Bring your own sarong and get there early to get a skirt. It's better to have shorts or leggings underneath. You should definitely stretch before you go into class because you just go straight into it when the class begins. Be prepared to feel sore after and definitely feel it in your back. Aloha hula is such a great studio, my daughter has been dancing there for almost 3 years now and she's become so committed to dancing with the help and direction from aunty Lyndel . Aunty Lyndel and her sons are such great instructors, they are dedicated to teach the dances and culture to each student. Aloha hula has been such a great experience for myself and my daughter. I also attend the fitness class on the weekends. It is so much fun and an excellent work out. I feel I get more of a work out and sweat more than I do on my daily run. I use to dance with Aloha Hula 10 years ago and now my 10 year old daughter is. When this is your culture and you want to make sure your keiki's (children) have the same love for their background which is what my desire is, not to only know where they came from but be proud of who they are. No one is rushing her before she is ready. She stays were she is until she is good enough to advance. The only reason I'm writing is cause I read some of the One Star ones. The One Star reviews seem...petty? And the one from the Karen complaining about the show price is funny. Most groups charge upwards of $700 so $250 was an amazing price. I don't know what they charge now though. There aren't any smokers present during the kids classes. I'm there every Tuesday with my kid so I would know. Also the schedule is the schedule? It's not their job to accommodate you, their job is to share the culture. Which they do. I don't know why there was a complaint about improving as a dancer? That's kind of the point. ALL the teachers are great. And the students who attend are extremely diverse so the comment about discrimination is questionable. It's POC owned and the student majority are POC. Also the floor, if you leave with dirty feet you leave with dirty feet. I've seen the owner clean that floor every week. My oldest took a modern dance class in college and she danced barefoot and her feet were always dirty when she was done. It's not a big deal. It's a good school. That's what's important. Aloha Hula is a fun place to learn Polynesian dancing and culture. They offer all levels of hula and Tahitian classes for children (girls and boys) and adults. The studio also provides and cultivates a great community to meet new friends who share the passion in dancing and the culture. The instructors are well-known in the Polynesian community, both on the mainland and the islands. They each have their individual styles in teaching, but all have been enjoyable to learn from. My daughter and I have been coming here for more than a year, and we are enjoying the classes and the shows/festivals that we have been able to participate in. There are only a few places that I truly love going to... 1) Home to my family, 2) Church because I need Jesus, and 3) Aloha Hula Dance Studio! My family has been a part of this studio for 4 years now and there is nothing I don't love about this place. Aunty Lyn-Del (owner) makes sure that we learn not only the choreography, but the stories and legends behind the music we dance to. She teaches us in a way that we have so much honor and respect for the Polynesian culture. My daughter started at 4 years old - she was a rough and tumble, hardcore karate girl. Because of the guidance and love she has received from Aunty and her 2 sons (Taimane & Kaikea), she is growing into a graceful young lady who has a love for the Islands. She's learning how to dance with Hawaiian implements, sing/read/speak in the native languages of Hawaii and Tahiti, and become part of a sisterhood. I brought my daughter here not because I thought she'd look cute in the costumes (although she really does) but because she wanted to learn more about the dancing and the culture. I've been dancing with AHS for 3 years now. My husband makes fun of me because he says I've secretly been wanting to be a hula dancer all my life, but never said anything. Yes, I am shy! My 8 year old has been going here for about a year now. She has learned many Polynesian dancing techniques and discipline since she started taking class with Aunty Lyn del. She has made real friends along the way who have made her time in her classes fun. My youngest one, who is 5 years old, attends the baby Pua class. She does truly enjoy aunty Ella's class. I love Aloha Hula Studio! The director, Aunty Lyn-Del and her whole (very large) family are dedicated to teaching Polynesian culture and are wonderful and talented dancers and musicians. The haumana (student) roster is huge and everyone is kind and supportive of each other. Depending on the class you can learn hula, tahitian, maori, or samoan dances, or ukulele. Also, Aunty Lyn-Del and other well-known kumu teach workshops at the studio from time to time. Best of all, they know how to have fun!! I have had a few negative experiences with this place. Most recently, I was told about a ukelele class for my 8 year old daughter, was told to buy her own uke, which we did and show up this certain day and we arrived... no one there! I called and they said they didn't have me on there list and there wasn't enough kids to run the class, poor communication! They told me they would be starting it in about a month, it is now 4 months later and still no call... thanks for making me buy this ukelele, that has never been used! Other experiences include me calling for information on their program on 2 seperate occasions,, like 2 years gap in between and NO ONE ever called to give me information! I feel like I have had to chase them to join their special, exclusive Polynesian tribe! But nevermind, don't think they live aloha here anyway... on another occasion, I tried walking in to try and speak with someone while they were in the middle of a routine and was given the most dirty look by the instructor! I'm over this place, they are a horribly ran place and are the complete opposite of the welcoming culture that Polynesians are supposed to convey read more

I am a houle girl who has fallen in love with Polynesian culture and dance. I was super excited to find Aloha Hula and see the sign for Tahitian workout classes on Saturdays and Sundays. What a great workout- loads of fun. Auntie Lyn is an expert instructor and this studio is the perfect example of Hawaiian Ohana. So much has changed since I crashed the exercise class- my daughter and granddaughter are now taking classes, my granddaughter is competing in Tahitian dance competitions, and our life is filled with awesome new friends and amazing opportunities to be a part of this beautiful culture. I came in as a beginner and was the only guy in the class but it did not matter. In fact they are also looking to grow the "kane" (men's) class. My niece and my sister introduced me to this halau.
