In my short time here, was quick to realize that this office will do whatever they can to bill, bill, bill insurance regardless of the patients requests. I kindly asked multiple times to skip the X-rays on this visit since I had them done 6 months ago at my previous dentist out of state. Also, after reading reviews that their dental assistants frequently mess up their X-rays and take them repeatedly, and have had my mouth cut up in the past from these, I wanted to opt out as I've always had a perfectly clean dental record and no concerns. The doctor told me "I have no choice" and told me the law requires him to take x-rays every 6 months. I later confirmed with my new dentist that this is false, especially for patients with no previous dental issues. It was clear that this is only done to rack up their insurance billing. After I was told that I "have no choice" and given a smug attitude, I had to leave the office without receiving the dental cleaning. It's unfortunate how many doctors will prioritize money over doing what's best for their patients who spend their hard earned money on health and dental care. They will also try to make you sign a paper stating that they can perform a whole list of "extras" without further consent and hold you responsible for the bill knowing that insurance won't pay for it. read more

This dental office is a scam. Before considering a visit, thoroughly review all feedback. Despite being informed that my cleaning was covered by insurance, Aloha Dental insisted on charging me AFTERWARDS. They also claimed I required a root canal, yet upon seeking second and third opinions from different dentists, I was told that Aloha Dental is a scam for insurance money and I did not need a root canal at all. Aloha Dental operates dishonestly and should not be in business. Another dentist even disclosed that they often rectify mistakes made by this practice on unsuspecting patients. I absolutely would NOT recommend this place. First, they get you to sign papers that for them "standard" but they are not, one of them is financial polices which is literature paragraphs than actual policies to tell you they will bill you if the insurance doesn't cover the procedures even though they've checked your plans and know what's in and what's not. second one for procedures that you don't need but they make you acknowledge they are not covered, they also make you sign their own proposal of treatment even if you don't chose it. Second, the actually service, my experience was rushed for no reason, the X rays were taken 3 times and were not correctly and then the clean up was also pretty rushed. my partner was "not qualified" for regular cleaning and they required "deep cleaning" and said it will take hours and has to be in two seprate sessions , it took 20min and second session 25min + $200 Never had such bad experience with a dentist office and I wouldn't go there again. read more

Do not go here!! They're just out to get your money!!! I went here and got diagnosed with so many problems, didn't trust it, went back to my dentist in my hometown and he said my teeth looked perfectly fine! Notice how so many of these reviews say "great dentist, they found things no other dentist noticed!" that's because they're making stuff up for your money!! They also have weird energy and felt like salesmen. I was 10 minutes late (which was my bad, got stuck in a meeting), so they refused to clean my teeth. This by itself wouldn't have bothered me that much, I get it, they're on a schedule, that's fine. But they conveniently still had plenty time for the exam and to tell me all the work I would need to get done. It also shows that they book as many patients as possible with zero wiggle room so they can make as much money as possible. During the exam, they told me I had soft enamel, 2 cavities, and that I grind my teeth at night. They recommended a prescription toothpaste for my enamel and a custom mouth guard (tried to get me to buy it right then and there), and for the cavities to be filled. They used their little camera thing to show me cracks in my teeth as evidence of the grinding. 2 things about this: I have a cousin and a sister-in-law that are both dentists and both said that cracks are common after having braces and that they should've watched it before immediately jumping to recommending potentially completely unnecessary dental work. I went to my family dentist in my hometown and he didn't say ANY of that, I specifically asked about each thing and both he and the hygienist said they didn't see evidence of any of that. My SIL also said that she sees this all the time now where dentists immediately charge for care instead of watching it. The camera thing also majorly sketches me out. It feels like they're showing you stuff on your teeth as "proof" of their fake claims. It felt like a sketchy mechanic showing you random pictures of car parts and being like "see how the float bowl on your carburetor's choke joint is totally degraded down the left side? yeeaaahh that'll be $700 :/" when it's really just rusted but you have no idea what you're looking at. I've never seen that camera thing at another dentist's office, just weird. I also got really weird vibes from the staff. Not to toot my own horn but I've been told that I'm a good judge of character, and I felt like everything they said was extremely scripted, like they word everything very carefully and have everything rehearsed to cover all their bases. This is not the place to go for a root canal. I wish I would have known this last week. I was seeing a doctor here for the past 2 years and it was great for my 6 month check ups, cleaning, X-ray and even fixed a chipped filling that created a food trap. Don't go here for a root canal. Last week I went In for the first root canal I've ever needed because Dr Mulgrew told me I needed one on my back molar since it looked like it was infected. I've had a great dental history besides cavities and 2 crowns on back molars. Unfortunately during the procedure the root of my tooth was perforated. He sat me up in the middle of the procedure to let me know the tooth can't be saved and tried to blame it on a crack that was never apparent on any X-ray. I told the doctor I was not comfortable with him pulling my tooth at that time because I thought I had gone in for a routine root canal procedure and now I'm being told that my tooth needs to be pulled (shocking for any normal human) He closed it up with temporary filling material then referred me to on oral surgeon and also suggested he remove the tooth. dr Mulgrew left the sharpest razor sharp edge on my tooth which cut my tongue for the next 24 hours, I was numb and couldn't feel it until later that evening. I called the office to let them know that I was unhappy with the care I received and negligence of Doctor Mulgrew for leaving my tooth in the condition he did and that I needed to be seen ASAP to at least have the sharp edge filed down. They told me they couldn't get me in until Tuesday (6 days after my initial appointment) I am now in the predicament of going through tooth extraction and seeking an implant that will cost me thousands of dollars. This truly makes me sad. Thankfully I was able to see another dentist that explained everything that happened to my tooth and why I need to take the next steps. I hope aloha dental learns from this experience, I will never be back. This entire predicament could have been avoided if the doctor referred me to the SPECIALIST that does these procedures by the handful daily. So disappointing. read more

DO NOT GO. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. DR MULGREW DAMAGED MY ONCE HEALTHY TOOTH REQUIRING A ROOT CANAL AND CROWN. I went to Dr Mulgrew when my previous dentist retired. I had been with that dentist for more than 20 years and had complete confidence in their abilities. During my first visit to Aloha Dental I was told two unexpected things, that- 1. a filling I had was deteriorating and 2. I needed a night guard as I was grinding my teeth while sleeping. A custom night guard (I believe in the neighborhood of $600) was recommended. My previous dentist had never mentioned either of those issues which was surprising as they had always been diligent about the care that I received. Nonetheless, I decided to move forward with the replacement of the filling. On the day that my filling was replaced, I was told that I should expect pain for 2-3 weeks. (I've since learned from multiple sources that the standard is 1-2 days. Don't get a filling from Dr Mulgrew unless you're prepared for 10 times the industry standard for recovery.) Additionally, Dr Mulgrew told me that the tooth that he worked on had a very deep cavity and that it was probable that I would likely need a crown or root canal at some point as there was little healthy tooth left. This was surprising as I had no pain in my tooth and had never been told that there was an issue with my tooth. I was once again strongly encouraged to purchase a custom night guard. After 1 1/2 weeks, I was still unable to chew on the right side of my mouth, had considerable pain if my upper and lower teeth made contact, and persistent, continual pain 24/7. I scheduled a follow up appointment as I was about to head out of town for 2 months. At that appointment, Dr Mulgrew ground down some high spots. When I told him that it felt as though I was making contact with the left side of my mouth prior to the right, he told me that was "contradictory" to the symptoms I was reporting and told me that I was still within the 2-3 week window for expected pain. I went out of town and the same symptoms continued requiring me to visit and pay for two emergency out of town appointments one week apart. Each of these dentists were well regarded by several family members so I have confidence in their opinions. Each separately drew the same conclusions- 1. The initial cavity was very shallow with a small filling, 2. The replacement filling that Dr Mulgrew did was poorly and improperly done. It was also created with a low valley leaving a gap on the right side of my both when my left side made contact, 3. My previously healthy tooth was now DYING as a result of Dr Mulgrew's work. The X-rays, taken one week apart, clearly showed the dramatic infection that was now surrounding my entire tooth. 4. I now needed a root canal and a crown. and 5. I had no need for a night guard. One dentist went so far as to say "I make it a practice to not comment on another dentist's work but it is clear, this dentist damaged your tooth and was trying to lay the ground work to cover for that. You would not need a root canal if he had not killed your tooth." So, I am now approximately 5 weeks out from my encounter with Dr Mulgrew and Aloha Dental. Dr Mulgrew poorly and unnecessarily replaced a filling and killed my tooth, and I've paid for 2 appointments with him, along with 2 emergency out of town appointments and will be paying for a root canal, temporary crown and permanent crown. Additionally I've been in pain for 5 weeks and am still unable to able eat anything but soft foods. Prior to writing this review, I called Aloha Dental, explained the situation to the office manager and let him know that I wanted to give Dr Mulgrew the courtesy of discussing things prior to posting a review. I understand that mistakes can happen and wanted to afford him the chance to accept responsibility for this situation. To his credit, he did give me a call. Regrettably, he did not take any ownership for the mistakes that were made, assumed no responsibility and made no attempt to try to rectify things. On the positive side, the office staff at Aloha Dental has always been courteous and, when I was left waiting for 30 minutes for an appointment, they offered an HEB gift card (which I declined). If you are seeking dental care, I would STRONGLY advise against Dr Mulgrew. There are many talented, responsible dentists in Austin. He does not appear to be one of them. read more

I ended up getting a bone splinter from the tooth extraction. It was removed but the issue ended up being more than just that. This extraction process was unnecessary. If any dentist pressures you to get your wisdom pulled, don't do it unless it is actually necessary. I learned this the hard way. Aloha dental is big on trying to sell you mouth guard and wisdom tooth extractions. Dr. Mulgrew went into my mouth like a savage and now I have a bone that sticks out of the inside wall of my mouth. Amazing place!!! Took both of my children to get dental work a few days ago and I was immediately impressed with their services. Aloha's location it's perfect with ample parking. The office was clean, elegant, and modern. The front desk guy, Jason, was friendly, knowledgeable, and very quick. Within minutes of arriving my boys were getting their X-rays taken and subsequently their treatment done. The office it's equipped with state of the art technology and top of the line equipment (their chairs even massage you). Their hygienist, Claudia, was very professional, thorough, and helpful, she even took the time to teach my kids proper brushing and flossing techniques. One of my kids needed an extraction and Dr. Wang was very patient, caring, and took all the precautions so that my child didn't suffer any unnecessary pain, their assitant, Mayra even held my boy's hand while the doc pulled his teeth out! Starting with some of the comfiest dentist chairs I have ever sat in to the cool "sun glasses" they provide while in the chair. Pros - The front desk staff has always been super nice as well as the dentists. Cons - I started going here around 2010 when they were more relaxed about the frequency of dental X-rays. Over time, they became increasingly aggressive with their demands for X-rays and wanted to have them every visit. Having a very clean dental record, I would protest about the frequency, and they would tend to be flexible with exceptions to their policy (which I believe is every 6 months or every year). Then one appointment, after already pre-confirming with staff over the phone that I would not have to get X-rays at that visit, the dental hygienist refused to examine me, essentially kicking me out of the office. While that's fine and good and they are entitled to their policies, it was a complete waste of my morning. Additionally, she told me that it was against the law for them to examine me since it had been over a year since my last X-rays. I'm not sure if that's a law or not, but I did look up the American Dental Associations promulgated pamphlet concerning radiation recommendations and it basically says for an adult with healthy teeth the recommendation is 24 to 36 months so I call Applesauce. Finally, in 2011 I was given a full mouth X-ray (approximately 20 x-rays) without being offered a thyroid guard, which I wasn't aware existed at the time. A little over a year later, my general practitioner discovered a large goiter on my neck during a routine exam. Coincidence? Perhaps. But it does irk me that the person taking the X-rays was too careless to take that one extra step, and so I'm left to always wonder if that was somehow related. Now I have to go to an endocrinologist once a year and get it checked. I've had to get several biopsies as well. It's been a huge drag, not to mention expensive and unsightly. Are the two things related? Maybe not. But it'd be difficult to prove to me that they are not. What makes matters worse is all of the smug dentists out there who will write off anyone who objects to excessive X-rays as being overly paranoid or ignorant. Would not be surprised when a comprehensive study comes out saying they were wrong all along. read more

I have seen Dr. Wang and his team many times over the past year and he never fails to deliver. He is an honest and kind dentist that I am lucky to have found since moving to Austin a few years ago. His explanations are crystal clear, scheduling is hassle-free, and the office itself is relaxing and clean. Avoid! They don't take normal xrays. My insurance covers 100% xray costs but whatever method they use (or way they bill) left us with surprise invoices. Their xray process was very painful as well. I went in for a general cleaning (cavity-free) and was then told I had a mouthful of cavities (but never told how many?). She viewed the photos taken and just kept saying that shading was a cavity, that one is a cavity and so on. Our insurance also covers 100% cleaning fee but I was told that there was a random $50 at the end of the appointment. ALOHA !!!! everyone :) i went in today as a new patient to get my teeth cleaned & get an overall exam done . the front desk staff , SARA , promptly greeted me with smile & helped me check-in swiftly. the coolest thing about this office is that " SMILE " they take a pic of each of their patients for records; i already felt welcomed & cheered up .... great vibe ( two thumbs up ). while i was sat in the office , i realized they see " KIDS " too... i overheard they had a gentleman in the office speaking atleast 3 different languages ( spanish & english) while he was constantly on the phone couldn't get the third one.... IMPRESSIVE !!!!! multi-lingual staff.. i was then seen by , COLETTE , she introduced herself as the Hygienist . she came across as a very warm & caring person. Colette was very educative & explained to me what she was going to do. she is very dexterous & knows what she is doing. she kept an ongoing dialogue open throughout my time in the chair . & i must share this guys .......................... they have MASSAGE CHAIRS in this office . so here i am getting my teeth cleaned & getting a MASSAGE too ( two birds with one stone ) Woo Hoo. my exam was done by Dr. Jumper , he was very patient & diagnosed & came up with the appropriate treatment. he took a look at the x-rays & PANO ( 360 degree x-ray ) explained to me about the possible outcomes. After having a bridge put in, I complained about gum pain and was told it would go away after a few weeks. When I went back in for a check up a few weeks later I let the team know that the pain was still present. I spoke to Dr. Mulgrew who suggested I wear a mouth guard and said I had bruxism due to grinding my teeth. I let him know I had never experienced bruxism prior to my new tooth but said I'd get an over the counter mouth guard for now until I could afford a custom mouth guard. The mouth guard helped but didn't take the pain away 100%. I still experienced sharp pain a few times a week. I got a call from the office asking when I wanted to come in and get more work done (another bridge on the opposite side of my mouth) and I said I wasn't comfortable with going forward with another procedure while I wasn't satisfied with my current bridge. I said that I would be going to a new dentist and the office admin asked me to come in right away, so that Dr. Mulgrew could shave down my tooth. I went in, waited over an hour, then had my two minute procedure done. I haven't had tooth pain since the shaving. I will not be going back for any procedures in the future because I don't feel like I was heard when I expressed my discomfort to the Doctor on multiple occasions. read more

I visited Aloha Dental today, and really enjoyed it - which is to say a lot, because who truly enjoys going to the dentist?! Anyways, everyone was super friendly and welcoming. Not to mention, very helpful, and accommodating! Especially, Claudia, David, and Dr. Jumper: Claudia was sweet and gentle, and genuinely seemed happy to be there and to be taking care of me. David was equally kind, pleasant, and easy to talk to - he also gave me some helpful tips that I appreciated. Dr. Jumper was knowledgeable, thorough, and direct, while still being friendly and warm. They all make a great time at Aloha Dental, and that is a guaranteed way to have patients leaving healthy AND happy. The office is very clean, comfortable, and decorated nicely. The dental chairs are also equipped with massage capability, so that was a relaxing and luxurious addition to my experience.
