We had to find a contractor to demo/fill a pool that had been unused for years. It was a very nice pool.... but the space it was taking up was a waste, and could be much better utilized. Their ideas improved the project from just a simple "fill in this hole" to "this is how I wanna use my back yard; do you have any ideas?". We purchased our house knowing that we would demo the pool as soon as possible. One thing led to another and before long, it got to November. I contacted Mandy via Yelp and she replied quickly about how to get an estimate. When Tom and Mandy arrived, they were professional and answered all of my questions. They spent enough time to understand why we wanted the pool removed and what we wanted to use the area for after it was finished. I never felt pressured to lock in a date or begin work right away. In fact, Tom was booked through Christmas so I figured he must be good! As the project start date neared, the much-needed rain looked like we would have to cancel the project until things dried up. Finally we were down to two options but we finally we went with AllStar, Tom, over another well known company in San Diego area. I was so glad with our decision even at the beginning we were enticed by another company that promised many things but kept changing along the way. Not only very professional and knowledgeable, Tom was a very honest person who explained everything clearly right up front to us: something he can do and something he can't or won't. And he would make the suggestion or recommendation for you to consider. For example, we wanted to have pavers on top of the filling dirt. He helped find a contractor for us, which tuned to be excellent. He personally coordinated with the contractor for the smooth transition to be sure everything was arranged well. Because of his efforts, we didn't experience any difficulty or issue in dealing with two different projects. He was also very courteous in taking care of any of our concerns and always made sure we were aligned. I just felt so comfortable and easy in working with him during whole processes. He paid great deal of attention to the detail such that there was nothing left behind. He often went extra miles to fix the issues that we didn't foresee. One thing I certainly see from Tom is that he takes great deal of pride in his work and very passionate about what he is doing. He will try everything he can to make his project perfectly completed. I had an in-ground concrete spa in my backyard that was leaking in several places. Given the current drought situation in California, I could not continue operating it in that condition in good conscience. The cost of bringing it back into operation was prohibitive, so I decided decommissioning it and reclaiming the space in my back yard made the most sense. I contacted several demolition companies that specialized in pools and spas, but AllStar was the only company that returned my call. After collecting some preliminary information, Mandy was able to give me a rough estimate but she scheduled an onsite visit with Tom and her so they could get a better idea of what would be involved. From the onsite inspection until the final concrete pour, Tom was a pleasure to work with. He explained everything that they would be doing, went over my options and how they would affect the cost of the job, and gave his insight into what he thought was the best way to proceed. Mandy kept me informed on the schedule and if any issues came up that needed to be addressed. As the project proceeded, if there was additional work that needed to be done, I'd ask Tom if he could arrange it. He never lobbied for the extra work, but was more than happy to facilitate it getting done even if it meant bringing in another contractor for the job. They finished the concrete pour last week for the new surface and I'm very pleased with the result. Even the work they did not do themselves (stucco patching, etc.) looks great. Tom and his wife were awesome. This review is a year late. Sorry for all that, but I had an ugly, non-functioning pool with a rusty chain link surrounding the pool and crappy concrete. The downside to buying a fixer upper with alot of problems. From the first call to the end, Tom and his crew he used were professional, came to all appointments, took care of all the permit issues, and I was able to get to work and not worry about the removal and fill of my pool. Tom even put up with me and my mom when the concrete slab (or what we like to call the 1,000+ square foot patio) became a larger and larger area. Tom put up with all of my indecision between what type of stamped concrete, the color mixing, and everything that goes along with the fact you are spending alot of money on a fairly permanent concrete slab (yes, it really is the patio covering over a good part of my back yard). I would highly recommend Tom, but as he is great at what he does, he is consistently busy, so plan ahead. He came when he said he would and stayed until the job was complete and I was happy. Yes, I am very happy. It still looks as good today as it did when he completed the job. And yes, this was a real job in Clairemont, and not a paid for review. I spent over $20,000 and considering I did my research and met with a few people before I made my decision, this was a reasonable price for my concrete slab. Yes, I do get a kick out of calling it that because it really is that large and could really be the size of small house floor plan. On the positive side, with all of the drought restrictions and raising of water prices this slab is great and i don't have to provide it much care or water. Whoo hoo!!!!!! read more

I requested a quote from AllStar and Tom and Mandy showed up that weekend. They looked over the job and told me what it entailed. They gave a pretty detailed explanation of what would take place and what they could/could not do. Mandy sent me a proposal a few days later. The price was about four grand less than what I thought it would be to demo a 1980's pool that had been empty for the last 12 years (Sorry guys...). I signed the contract and Mandy was in constant communication. She pulled all the permits from the city. They gave me an estimated start date of a couple months out, but called me a few weeks later and said they could start early. They had my 8 foot deep pool (450 sq feet) demo'ed in less than five days - I chose the compaction report so I would have less headaches if I ever sold the house. They worked through a 100 degree heatwave to complete the project on time and did a beautiful job, ensuring the ground was level and ready for the new pour. As someone who is unfamiliar with home improvement projects Tom walked me through my options for the next phase and ensured I was aware of pitfalls I hadn't considered (such as drainage and sprinkler lines.) Tom was recommended by a friend who had her pool taken out and I could not be happier. We set up a start and end date, with a contract and price that was fair. He took care of the city permit, and started the job the day he said he would. The end date was one day longer, but it was so he could come back and do a clean up. He currently is doing the cement and decking in our background. We had a very specific design in mind and he is working very hard to give us exactly what we want. He shows up every morning and has a conversation with me and my husband about what to expect from that day. He has a crew that is friendly and knows what they are doing. Tom and Mandy came to our home this weekend with the expectation of providing a proposal for demolition of our pond and waterfall. Both have leaks in the cement which cause the operation to be very costly. After about 20 minutes of discussing options, they both asked if we would be looking to demo this even if the pond worked correctly. My wife and I both said "no" as it is such a focal point of our yard. At that point, they shared what could be done to repair this and even recommended a contractor COMPLETELY UNRELATED to them. (Someone they worked with in the past and who they respect). My wife and I processed this suggestion for a moment and replied- "you do realize that everything you are sharing with us will result in no demo work...thus no work for you?" They acknowledged this and said that it was "their way of doing business" and that "customer satisfaction has always been their main priority". Yesterday, Mandy emailed me the contact info for the contractor they know. Tom & Mandy also shared various sealing options that I can approach other contractors to seek bids from. I've met and worked with hundreds of contractors but Tom and Mandy are in a class by themselves! They drove over 30 miles each way to visit my home and recommend me NOT to use their services! Disappointed with service. We had AllStar Demolition remove our in-ground fiberglass spa, fill with dirt, and cement over. Also to remove spa equipment. When Tom and Mandy came out to give a quote they were very professional and seemed trustworthy so I felt good about them doing the work evening at such a high price. While transporting the spa heater down our steps, Tom and another employee, hit the heater on every cement step on the way down and chipped each step. When I asked what happen, Tom explain that the heater was so heavy they were lucky they didn't break their backs taking it down the stairs. Ramps were to be used but obviously were not for this part of the job. After asking Tom had his employee fill in the chipped steps (see photo). It stated in the contract that all lines would be capped. I asked why the lines that went into the heater were not capped and I was told by Tom these were not the water lines cited in the contract and the best he could do was fill the open lines in with foam (see photo). Also plants around the work area were left with fiberglass and cement dust on them (see photos). Not worth $5,000. No accountability was taken by the company in anyway or was a discount given for the poor job. Obviously would not recommend this company. read more

We will now have full use of the backyard, without the headaches and expense of operating a very large 1970s-era swimming pool in need of a major renovation He did great work with his Bobcat, and completed the filling process exactly as he said he would in the contract. He handled all of the details from beginning to end, and made sure that all electrical and water lines were removed, or capped, and also made sure that the old pool was demolished according to standard practices. He also restored the gate to the backyard back the way it was before he began. You almost wouldn't know that a pool once took up most of the space in the rear of the house. What's more, the fees we reasonable, less than the competing bids we received for this project. Tom is very personable, but at the same time very professional. Absolutely THE BEST!!!!!! Tom removed an in-ground swimming pool for us as our children were grown and gone and we simply no longer used it. We interviewed three companies. Only ONE COMPANY knew what they were talking about. The other two companies were a little bit less in costs but not that much and they told us it might go higher. Additionally, Tom gets your permits, saving you time!!!!! Tom walked us through what he would do, why he would do it, what he would do it for, how long it would take him, that he would clean up his mess when completed and that he guaranteed we would be happy. Tom never faltered on anything. He was there when he said he would be. Always with a smile and a wonderful personality and Tom worked hard, very hard and very conscientiously as if he were taking his own pool out.He was very diligently in cleaning up any mess that had been made. When he filled the pool with dirt he did not just dump it. He is such a master with that backhoe....Tom sprinkled the dirt, packed it down, sprinkled more dirt, packed it down and so forth and so on until it was complete. We have never had any source of water puddle anywhere, never had a dip anywhere where the pool was!!!!! When he is done...you would never know a pool had ever been there!!! My wife and I had a cement fish pond (complete with 4 foot tall cement waterfall) in front of our house. We lost all the fish a couple of years ago and emptied it. Since that time we tried to get it removed. My research showed it wasn't going to be that easy because it was less than 2" from the house and very close to floor-to-ceiling dining room windows. On the other side was our colored concrete driveway. A skid-bucket with a hammer attachment would be too dangerous. I contacted a contractor I had used in the past. He declined the job. I got another demolition contractor from Home Advisor. He finally came out and said he would give me a bid. He never did so I called him back. He said he would get the bid to me the next day. He didn't, so I canceled any further dealings with that company. I ran into Tom at Dixieline one day and saw his company t-shirt. I told him that was what I needed. I made an appointment to have him look at the job. He came out at the appointed time and gave me a bid for the work. It was very reasonable considering the proximity to the house and driveway. I agreed to the contract and within a week Tom and one of his crew were out (on time) to start the removal. Turned out whoever put the pond and waterfall in had a lot of concrete and didn't want to waste any of it. The pond walls were 6 to 8 inches thick. Within 1 1/2 days the pond was all out and backfilled. They took great care in protecting the windows and the driveway. Tom and his wife, Mandy, were great to work with and they are wonderful people.
