This FreshCo used to be a Sobey's. I like FreshCo a lot, mainly because the items that I typically…read moreget are cheaper than most grocery stores. I also like earning Scene+ points when I get groceries. I came here after seeing a Saturday matinee movie at the Cineplex SilverCity in Richmond Hill. Normally, I got to the FreshCo in Richmond Hill. Instead, I wanted something different and visited this grocery store for the first time. It was a ten-minute drive over, which was fine. There was plenty of parking. I backed into a spot. I heard a motor running the entire time that I was near my car. It was powering an amp that a man had for his violin. He was playing songs and busking in the parking lot. More on that later. I like Sobey's. Markham doesn't have one. This FreshCo does have that Sobey's feel. Aisles are wider. It is spacious and clean. I came to get fruit. The strawberries from Mexico looked ripe and yummy. I also got a bag of gala apples. I needed celery. The selection wasn't as pristine, but I did get what I needed. It didn't look horrible. What's special about this store is a massive kosher foods section. It was impressive, with fridges everywhere. I was here for paratha. It was on sale. I was happy. Naturally, I picked up Dare cookies. I nabbed the last box of coconut. I also got a box of Celebration raspberry truffle cookies. I was excited to see Coke orange cream here. It was in regular and zero sugar. Yes! I got a case of twelve zero sugar. I like that each FreshCo store is different. This one had empanadas, crepes, and pancakes. They were all in the frozen food section. I got a package of beef empanadas. I am looking forward to trying them. I got a nice female staffer at the checkout. She scanned my Scene+ barcode off my phone. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and all was good. I loaded my groceries in my reusable Longo's bag (there's a Longo's across the street that I've been to and liked), thanked the woman, and left. I put away my groceries in my car, found a loonie, and added it to the violin guy's tip jar. He had a sign saying that he was supporting five kids. It was windy and I appreciated the effort. His playing was flat at times during Hallelujah. I felt like I was being harsh. He was in front of a grocery store. It's not like he was performing with the symphony with better acoustics and needed perfect pitch! This grocery store rocks. I'm glad that I did my grocery run here. (84)

I needed to pick up a few grocery items, so dropping by Food World Supermarket afterwards was perfect. This building used to Rose Garden Banquet and Convention. I'm guessing that due to the pandemic, this business suffered and shut down. There is plenty of parking in front and around this supermarket. I backed into a spot and walked in. The doors automatically open, which is wonderful. This supermarket is located across from Burger King. I often frequent it when I crave a flame-broiled burger. Both are in the same plaza as Wok of Asia. It's clean and cheerful when you first walk in. You see cases of pop and sparking water. The produce section then greets you. I needed avocados and celery. Prices are either comparable to what you see at grocery stores like No Frills, but the quality is better. Both produce items that I grabbed were fresh and in great condition. This grocery store carries halal items. It features a lot of South Asian products, such as Parle-G and paratha. You also see ramen and Ribena, both of which made me love shopping at this store even more. I saw everything from custard to paneer. It does sell corned beef in cans and rose water in glass bottles. Cool! The meat section is impressive. It's huge with every cut of meat that you can possibly think of. You can get food to go. There's a stall within the supermarket where you can get pizza, shawarma, and more. I paid for my produce. The woman at the checkout was extremely pleasant and nice. I paid with my debit card. This store gives you a plastic bag. I thanked her and headed to the exit. Just before you exit, there's a stall that sells desserts, ice cream, drinks, and more. I asked the woman behind the counter whether their drinks have added sugar. They don't. The store goes with the natural sweetness of their fruit or veggies. I wanted to get the sugar cane and coconut hydrating beverage. She had run out of coconut, so I got a large sugar cane drink. As she made my drink, I looked at the desserts display. There were individual portions of chocolate mousse cake and sponge cakes. You can also get milkshakes, ice cream, and more. She asked whether I wanted ice in my sugar cane drink. I said as much as the cup could fit the ice. It was perfect on a hot day. I asked the nice woman how long this supermarket has been open for. It opened on May 18th. I paid with my debit card. Done! I thanked the woman and left with my groceries and drink. The sugarcane was indeed the real deal. It was naturally sweet and yummy. I was happy with my drink. It was nice consuming it as I drove home. Whenever I was in the area to grab some dinner, there was never a supermarket close by to get a few grocery items. It's definitely more convenient now thanks to this Food World. (174)

Bloorcourt Village Market is an institution in this tiny West side neighborhood. A few months ago…read morethe bad news came down that the family who runs this market would have to vacate their old store location, which was on the next block over. There was such a huge outpouring of grief that the family pledged to remain in the neighborhood. Their new location took a couple of months to open, but I will never forget hearing the news that the new place had finally taken the brown paper out of the windows and opened it's doors. I won't forget it because it was my birthday and my drunken exuberance was unleashed upon the unprepared stranger who gave me the news at around 1am at Disgraceland. When I eagerly entered the new place I immediately told one of the owners that I'd nearly developed scurvy without them. She laughed and said it was great to have such community support. The new store is smaller, possibly by half, but it is now more of a specialty produce and grocery mart. The old location had a lot of room but their nonperishable aisles didn't seem to move a lot of stock. The new location still features some of their old specialties, including a wide range of latino and asian cooking supplies. The produce is always great, with a focus on organic when available. They also have a few cooler cases with drinks and some perishable goods. If you're in the neighborhood, skip the Dufferin Mall nightmare and head straight to this great little store, the jewel of the neighborhood.

However, it always appears that we are under over-zealous scrutiny from security and staff each time we visit. We have no idea why...we spend a lot of money each time we shop and certainly don't act in a suspicious manner. Perhaps it's because we are a mixed-race couple, maybe dress too casually or are considered scruffy, too fat, too old, or a combination of biases? I understand a rise in the cost of grocery items correlates to a rise in shoplifting, but seriously, enough is enough already. We have experienced a plethora of odd incidents relating to staff following us, scrutiny from till operatives as we walk down each aisle and staff has literally breathed down our necks at the self-checkout, even when putting on my gloves after paying. Although we have joked about this problem, the realization that this does not happen elsewhere has clinched the decision to call it quits and not visit the store again. I believe it's better to have some self-respect and not allow retail employees to treat you in this manner... so Metro at 221 Lloyd Manor Rd, Etobicoke can go and do one...maybe hassle someone else with their "isms" for a change.
