My family just recently used Allied Van Lines to move a dining room table (the only item) from Dothan, Alabama to Media, Pennsylvania. When a representative of Allied initially went to pick up the table up from my father, they advised him to have a crate built to be sure the table top was not damaged. He paid an additional $300 dollars to have a crate built to ensure that it would not be damaged during the move. The table made it to my new home. When the movers were putting the table back together, they drilled eight holes through the top of the table (see pictures). My parents kept this table in great condition so that it could be given to one of their daughters. It has been in the family for more than 80 years and meant a lot to us.
It will never be restored to its original state but could have been repaired. Seeing the damage to the table was hard enough but a close second came when I filed a claim and was met with a customer service representative who was unprofessional and dismissive. They received an estimate on the damage from a claims adjuster (who, by the way, laughed when he saw what the movers did) and offered only $500 even though I insured it for $16,000. There is no question as to whether or not they did the damage. They did it. For more than 80 years, the table top was in outstanding condition. They should take full responsibility for it. The company bills itself as "not just another moving company". This is true. They are a company that damages irreplaceable items and does not accept responsibility for it.
