Called the original installer of my system. $220 to diagnose a coolant leak. Then they quoted me $2100-2500 to fix a flare fitting or $500 to just recharge the system. I decided to hold off. I started looking into doing it myself. I found a great youtube video on proper flare fitting installs from James at Allied Complete Furnace & AC Repair. Wait, he's local!?!? Anyone who potential sacrifices their own business by educating people to properly DIY is a hero. I called him, and explained the deal. One of the things that sold me about James was the fact he outright told me what his cost of r410a. It was exactly the best price I could find online. Obviously he has a markup but he was 100% transparent and honest about it. He gave me 3 tentative options over the phone: 1) Recharge the system, $200-250 2) Recharge + leak stop and 50/50 chance to fix, $300 3) evacuate the system, fix a flare fitting, and recharge, $600-800 Boom, done deal. But that is not all. It took James less than 10 minutes to determine I had 3 leaky fittings. leak stop wasn't an option. The previous tech didn't even look at the fitting. James popped the plastic right off. No BS, just right to the point. "Look here, you have coolant all over the flare fitting." He honored his previous quote but fixed all 3 flare fittings. James also did a solvent wash on the condenser at no extra charge. It turns out that ALL THREE fittings were torqued to about 15lbs instead of the factory recommended 40lbs. Basically, he is a straight up honest hard working American. That old school pride in quality and does the absolute best job one can do. I dig it. I wish there were more people out there like James. James was upfront over the phone about the cost of repair: $100 base, $70 if a replacement part (igniter) was required. Situation: Our furnace stopped working on a Friday afternoon or evening. My husband figured out that it was the igniter that broke. Appointment: We called and left a voicemail over the weekend. We called again on Monday morning to schedule an appointment. James said he had a couple appointments before us, that he'd keep us updated via phone call or text message. In the afternoon, he said his current job was taking longer than usual, and he might be able to get to us later in the evening or the next day. Around 10:00 pm the same day (Monday), he called and said he was ready to fix our furnace if we were still available. Our house was losing about 3 degrees per day, and it was about 52 degrees at the time, so we chose sooner rather than later. Repair time: 15 minutes from arrival to departure. Super fast! Cost: As promised over the phone earlier. Payment: Allied has/had a Yelp offer at the time of this review, $50 for $100. Credit cards are accepted. Above and beyond: James fixed our fireplace since the pilot light was out and he was already there. He also made our furnace more efficient by updating the settings to blow less air and more heat (vs the then-settings to blow more air and less heat), saving us about $50 per year on our heat bill! When your furnace dies on a weekday in December, you don't have a lot of time to think about what to do next. After doing some very quick troubleshooting and pricing research, we called James at Allied Complete Furnace & AC Repair, and we are very glad we did. James was prompt, professional, and thoughtful. He conducted business with transparency and made certain we had all of the documentation and information related to our replacement. James told us our furnace was 21 years old and while he didn't consider that to be ancient by furnace standards, this particular model had a defect that had been the subject of a class action law suit in 2008. Although replacement was necessary, he did a "band-aid" repair to keep us from freezing until he was able to return to replace the furnace. He also noted that our water heater was leaking into our sump pump in the basement. When it rains, it pours! He gave me a quote on the spot for the furnace, a new thermostat, and the water heater (a non-emergency repair we needed to push back until the new year). Based on my research, I found his pricing for labor and the furnace unit to be competitive. James ran my credit card for his cost to come out, and we scheduled the replacement time before he left. He followed up with an email that included attachments of the class action suit information and confirmation of his submission of the limited parts warranty. He also helpfully included a link to PSE so we could submit our invoice to qualify for a refund due to the installation of the new energy effiicient unit. On the day of the replacement, James confirmed his arrival time by text, and then arrived with a helper to do the work. According to my husband who was home at the time, they worked efficiently and within the time estimate he provided. He gave us his expectations for maintenance, which he said should be practically nonexistant. He even attached a pocket to the outside of the unit to hold the manual! The owner handled my call right away when my furnace went out on 10/10/12. Prior to arrival, he purchased the part I needed for what I thought was a malfunctioning gas valve. He kept me updated on his arrival time. He arrived and assessed my furnace to immediately notice that I had a simple lose wire and tightened it for me. I was not charged a fee for his service and he was honest enough to not install the part he ordered for me knowing that I didn't really need it after all. I've worked with lots of contractors and subs over the last couple years and James @ Allied was absolutely outstanding. Owner James is a true pro and an affable guy. We hired Allied to install an AC system for our house. When he came over to give us a quote he asked all the right questions to get us the right system for the house. In our case, we went with an efficient system that didn't break the bank, plus a nifty new thermostat and remote. He didn't screw around with the bid. Without knowing anything about the competing bids, he beat them both. No need to negotiate. After checking out some references, his license, and insurance we hired him. When he started installing the AC coil, he noticed a problem with the prior furnace installation. The issue was a sizable air gap AFTER the filter that basically sucked cold air in from our garage (where the cat box is). The furnace had to work harder to heat that extra cold air, plus ew, cat box air. It was a simple fix, so James fixed it for us at no charge. He also noticed our filter needed changing, so he installed a fresh one for us without a mark up on the filter. Nice! Also, he didn't charge extra for mechanical or electrical permits (which some outfits do, watch out.) He didn't skimp or cut corners anywhere that I could see. He even installed a documentation box near the furnace and AC coil. The electrical sub he used was great. (Marcel @ Omega) Both electrical and mechanical install looked clean and professional. James showed up when he said he would, or called in advance if he was running a little behind. He explained what he was doing. He explained how to operate the system. Disclaimer: This is the first Yelp review I have written. I read a LOT of reviews, but do not write them. That's how strongly I feel about this... James from Allied was able to schedule me right away and come by to check out my furnace. I had recently installed the Nest thermostat, and was having trouble with the furnace being inconsistent. He quickly diagnosed the problem and recommended that I return the Nest as it wasn't compatible with the board on my furnace. He proceeded to fix other issues, including the banging noises that frequently occurred when the furnace shut off, and also fixed a couple of leaks in the pipes. He then replaced the thermostat with my old one, and made recommendations as to which smart thermostat would work better with our furnace. After using the Yelp coupon and being charged for a couple of parts, I paid a grand total of $70 for great service, good advice, and peace of mind. Considering how much you seem to pay for a lot less when service people come to your house, needless to say, I was extremely happy.
