A close friend of mine had recommended Dr Dare. I really wanted to like him, but I unfortunately had a really terrible experience, not for the dentistry itself but for how I was treated. I've never encountered anything like this before in my life. I'm transgender and female presenting. He deliberately misgendered me multiple times. I think he was quite shocked when I called him on it and his reaction was pretty terrible. Right after it happened he called my friend and said he called and left me a message (he hadn't) and that he would call me again the next day (he didn't.) I assume he was covering his ass with an existing patient (and his family), but clearly felt no contrition for what he'd done. This is a not a good guy -- this sort of thing is happening more lately. The fact that it's happening in Berkeley of all places is pretty worrying. If you are anything other than a Maga person, I would steer clear of him. read more

Very poor customer service! I made an appointment here as a new patient at the beginning of the year and was told the next available appointment that fit my schedule was in March. When my appointment date rolled around, I was told the dental hygienist called in sick and that they would have to reschedule. They never called me. I called them a week later and left a message to reschedule me. Still nothing. I figured they didn't want my business so I looked on the Delta Dental website for a new dentist and it showed that these guys are not taking new patients. I wasted 2 1/2 months waiting for an appointment when I could have just gone to someone else. read more

I had been going to Dr Hui since the mid-70s, so when he announced his retirement in something like 2018, I was apprehensive. I saw Dr Dare twice for cleanings when he first took over, then covid hit and I am ashamed to say I haven't been to a dentist since. That's, gulp... roughly 4 years? Fast forward to two days ago when I realized I hadn't actually inspected my teeth in all that time (tho I was flossing and brushing religiously), and to my chagrin I saw a dark spot way back on a molar, and after picking at it I was horrified to see a recess into the tooth. I called Dr Dare's office the next morning to schedule an appointment, and they called me back an hour later to say a cancellation opened up a spot that same day. They got me in for x-rays and an evaluation, then repaired the tooth on the spot. The whole process was smooth and it felt comfortable to be back in familiar hands. In less than 24 hours I went from being a tooth cleaning deadbeat with a scary black hole in my tooth to being all buttoned up and ready for the holidays. Thank you Dr Dare and team! My New Year's resolution will be to visit Dr Dare again in the very near future to get back on a regular cleaning schedule. read more

I have been coming to Dr. Hui for many years and am happy to continue now with Dr. Dare. He is equally kind, attentive, and trustworthy and has a conservative approach only doing fillings, etc. if necessary. I went to another dentist once because it was closer and was told I needed 6 fillings! I will not make this mistake again and will stay with Dr. Dare! read more

Dr Dare has to be the most gentlest dentist ever. He's very patient and thorough !! His quality of work goes beyond the regular typical dentists I've seen in over my 70 years of visiting dentist . The office is very friendly and knowledgeable... This a fact!!! read more

Dr Dare and his team are an absolutely wonderful group of people. I detest having to go to the dentist, but their welcoming demeanors always make the visits a little more pleasant. I honestly don't think I've had one negative interaction with them. When I told them about my wedding earlier this summer they were all so excited for me and asked to even see photos when I came back for a visit after the nuptials. It feels like family there. Dr Dare himself is so easy to talk to and always puts you at ease despite getting cavities filled and all the unpleasantries of metal prongs jabbing your gums and teeth. He does make a point to try not to be too rough during the procedures. There have been a couple of times where I wanted to get stains removed from my teeth (separate from my usual cleanings) and they were able to accommodate me. They also help me to clean the stains off of my nasty night guard. Such great service. The office itself is quite outdated, but it's not a big problem given how friendly they all are. read more

Great experience as a new patient. Office staff - friendly & courteous. Easy to make appt - got me in within 24 hours. Dr. Dare - professional yet warm, and he did a great job explaining what he was doing (set expectations) esp when checking teeth. Dental office - nothing fancy, yet easy access in Berkeley with parking on the premises. I parked on the street & was running out of town, and they even went out & added money in the meter for me. Been a patient of Dr. Hui for 20 plus years so I was sad to see him retire. Having said that, Dr. Dare is doing a great job and I'm happy to say I hope to have Dr. Dare taking care of my teeth from here onward I feel my teeth are in good hands. He does not push services and have a great staff. Getting your teeth cleaned is not always a joy, but I feel they really do a good job in seeing patient promptly, listening to them and allowing ample time for each patience's needs. After going to visit Dr Hui for several years I was a little bummed that he was retiring. Who genuinely likes change anyway? You get used to the office staff and dentist and you want it to stay that way. Dr Dare took on the practice and kept all of the employees. Dr Hui was even on staff for a while during the transition. While I had a small billing issue I think that the dentistry office is one of the better ones in the area still. Front desk is friendly and Allen seems pretty down to earth and knows what he is doing as a dentist. I can appreciate that transitional periods are difficult and I think under his leadership the practice has a bright future. Happy to report that I still enjoy going to the dentist at Allen Dare's practice. read more

Claudia the office manager was not helpful! I explained I was a new patient and had delta dental! She said ok! I said I have a toothache! Can't get you in for a couple of weeks. Then we keep talking about dates and then she says and we don't take delta dental and I say why didn't you say that at first! She just stumbled around on her words and made excuses! I had been recommended for this dentist and was very disappointed with the office managers attitude! read more

1. Pain. After every procedure my and entire family has gotten with Dr Dare (normal fillings), teeth and mouth have hurt for days, which has never happened before. 2. Poor communication. Dr. Dare does not communicate which teeth he will be working on, where, and why. This leads to confusing scenarios where you don't know how many teeth need to be worked on the day of your appointment, or the teeth you should look out for yourself so they don't turn into cavities. 3. Needs to listen better to patients: Also post filling, I immediately communicated that the bite wasn't right, and his response was to come back later for a follow up appointment weeks later, at which point I had jaw and tooth pain radiating from that very tooth, and the filling was adjusted. One star was added because he was able to squeeze an appointment in for me that lasted quite awhile, and he is receptive to feedback. I do expect him to improve overtime, but unfortunately this is not enough to me warrant coming back. read more

I love Dr. Dare and his team. They are super nice, friendly and accommodating. Dr. Dare took over for Dr. Hui, who was my dentist for many years. It's still a great practice and a wonderful stuff. My teeth always feel great when I leave the office. Also -- they have a parking lot! Which makes visits super easy. :) read more

I was very unhappy with my visit for a couple reasons. I did go during Corona and it did seem like they were clean and following protocols. Jabbing When Measuring Gums I was extremely surprised by how much the dentist poked my gums. He was jabbing it in there to measure my gums, and I did say, can you do less and why are you doing this. This was extremely out of the ordinary and not related to my gum health. He checked and said my gums and teeth were fine. No Cleaning! I had made an appointment and talked about a regular check up and cleaning. They did not have me on the schedule for cleaning. The office books those separately and I didn't say the right thing when I made the appointment. I have never had to ask a dentist if "cleaning" is included in my six month checkup. read more

I've long been a patient of this practice and have always been impressed by the first-rate way all steps are handled -- from booking appointments to punctuality and thoroughness. Recently, I needed to have a dental procedure that involved several hours of time in the chair. Dr. Dare and his entire staff made this all go remarkably well -- smooth and swift. I wrote a rave review about ten years ago when it was Dr. Hui's office so thought I should write another one for Dr. Dare. He is a great dentist with a wonderful staff who are friendly, kind, and don't ever guilt me for some of my poor dental habits and sugar addiction. They are also so accommodating. I had to get a crown done but my dental insurance from work didn't kick in for a couple of months so they did the prep work first and waited until I had my insurance before doing the procedure to save me a lot of money. They don't have fancy furniture or offices which I actually appreciate, but give quality care. They even have Saturday hours once a month. I have terrible teeth so it says a lot that I'm even writing this review, but can't say enough good things about Dr. Dare and his staff: Claudia, Jodi, etc. They're the BEST! read more

I had very good experience with Dr Hui. Less so with Dr Dare. They suddenly changed the operating doctor without letting me know before my appointment. My fillings were not done well and they had to drill open the fillings again to refill. Even after that my current dentist had to redo it again because the fillings still had gaps. After I left the area for more than 2 years they suddenly texted saying I have unpaid balance, which looks super unprofessional and suspicious. read more

Unbelievable customer service! I have been Dr. Hui's loyal patient for 35 years, and like others, mourned his retirement and was cautious about the "new" Dr. Dare. Last weekend I cracked a tooth. I knew it needed to be evaluated. My work hours are 7a-8p and I knew scheduling would be difficult. I called and Jody, after multiple conversations with Dr. Dare, set up 1. xray of the affected tooth at 0700 the next day. Claudia, one of the assistants, just so happens to arrive ~0700 daily, was certified to perform xrays, and could accommodate me NEXT DAY (12 hours after my phone call). WOW - what service! 2. Jody and/or Claudia would then coordinate xray review by Dr. Dare, who could explain repair options in a voicemail. 3. I could then - depending on the options - schedule an appointment mutually agreeable to both Dr. Dare and me. Overall - unbelievably wonderful customer service. Fully accommodated my (impossible) work schedule and arranged for timely and seamless care. Any initial caution and trepidation about Dr. Dare being Dr. Hui's successor is now gone. I was a patient of Dr. Norman Hui for maybe 40 years and considered him a personal friend. My daughter and I sent many satisfied friends to Dr Hui over the years. Dr Hui did not automatically see every anomaly as a cavity that needed to be filled or made bigger. I did not care so much, but other people appreciated the fact that Dr. Hui's novocaine injections were essentially painless. We were very concerned when Dr. Hui recently retired and Dr. Allen Dare took over the practice in the same location. Dr. Dare has upgraded the X-ray equipment and computer system. Dr. Dare uses magnifying glasses all the time which I think also contributes Dr. Dare being even more conscientious. Most of the staff is still there, which is another good sign. I have no qualms in highly recommending Dr. Dare as a dentist. read more
