I rarely write reviews, and the ones I usually write are positive. I went to Virginia Family…read moreDentistry because of the glowing reviews, but my experience was quite different. I've lived in the Richmond area for over 40 years and found their business practices concerning. My 19-year-old son, 17-year-old daughter, and I had appointments last week. After being informed that our new patient visits would total $577 for the same services (since we are self-pay), I agreed to proceed. While I understand my son is an adult, I made it clear that I would be paying for everything. I grew concerned when my dentist suggested pulling a back tooth due to a gap that might cause bacteria issues, despite no current problems plus making recommendation to see their periodontist and pushing a possible the idea of an implant for the tooth; as well as, selling them on their orthodontist after I mentioned that I had seen the orthodontist the day before...which they said they never got x-rays for and it didn't matter because theirs would be different. Additionally, we were told afterward that my daughter's visit would cost $60 more due to extra X-rays, which we were not informed about in advance. It's comparable to a mechanic doing extra work without getting your approval first. I decided to go along with it, appreciating the new patient discount. They then informed us my son would need a deep cleaning instead of a regular one and scheduled it for this week, again without giving any pricing information. When he asked if there would be extra costs, they implied there shouldn't be. Later, we found out this service would cost over $200. This was surprising since we were told otherwise, and they knew I was responsible for the payments. When I asked why we didn't receive a discount for my son's previous visit since he didn't get a cleaning the first time, they said his services were different. How? When the whole purpose of the visit was for a check up and cleaning. After speaking with the office manager, Lauren, I felt unheard and unacknowledged as a customer. She did not apologize or address my concerns, only defending their position. As a business coach and consultant, I've rarely encountered such poor customer service communication outside of the restaurant industry. We ultimately decided not to proceed with the additional service. Virginia Family Dentistry's communication with patients is lacking at best and unethical at worst. They lost out on over $1,500 of upcoming services we would have needed and the lifetime value of a customer. Choose carefully! They will not be getting any recommendations from me. It's noteworthy that they've disabled reviews on Facebook, which might explain the abundance of positive reviews here. I prefer practices that prioritize people over profits and are not influenced by private equity.

It was at that time that I asked for a referral, and he recommended Virginia Family Dentistry Orthodontist. And I have to admit that was the BEST recommendation anyone could have EVER given me. From the very first moment I walked through their doors, I was greeted so warmly that I knew I was in the right place. Their receptionist and front office personnel are very warm, inviting, and professional. But it didn't stop there. The initial process was informative with the comfort and ease necessary to help me make a decision. After that first visit, I was sold! When the day came to receive my braces, I was so excited! Their caring service, is by far the BEST! And they worked within my budget and I couldn't be happier. My regular dentist, who I've been with for 15 years, really gave me an EXCELLENT referral when he recommended Virginia Family Dentistry. They are now my favorite place to visit. I'm so glad I listened to my dentist!

My mouth was so numb that if Dr Broas had told me all my teeth had magically disappeared I would have believed him. Brianna assisted him, and they worked together in what appeared to me (the uninitiated) as perfect coordination. So once again, thank you for a stress- and pain-free dental experience! ___________ Two days ago I had an appointment at a different office in the Mid-Peninsula Medical Center, and I noticed a sign for this new dental office, showing they were now open. I wandered into the cheerily lit waiting room and made an appointment for two days later. It was my lucky day. Dr. William Broas (pronounced "brahss") recently opened the practice and is seeking new patients. He is a quite friendly and brisk, has been around the DDS community for many a year. Jennifer, the dental hygienist, was quick and knowledgable in her skill and trade, and made me feel at ease during the whole cleaning process. This is very important to me as I have TMJ, and the cleaning can be painful--but it wasn't at all! Caitlyn, the receptionist, was also delightful and efficient. When I set up my follow up appointment for my fillings and fitting for a mouth guard, she had all of the costs printed out, waiting for me so that I'd know what to expect. If you need a dentist, definitely give these folks a call!

DO NOT GO TO DAVID E TOWNSEND IN MANQUIN, VA!!! I was going…read moreto a dentist which was an hour and a half away from me that x-rayed my teeth and told me I needed 12 root canals done and that the rest of my teeth in my mouth needed fillings and maybe 1 extraction. I literally had to have my whole mouth fixed. I decided to go to David Townsend because he was only about 30 minutes away from where I lived and I needed so much work done that I couldn't drive an hour and a half every single week. He did my whole mouth in TWO days. The 1st day, he did fillings (which were supposed to be root canals) and that day when the numbing wore off, a filling was sticking way out of my tooth between another tooth and it was cutting my tongue so my mom had to file it down with a nail file! The 2nd and final day, I had the rest of my fillings done and 2 teeth extracted. That day when the numbing wore off, I called the emergency line due to it being after hours and left a voicemail crying my eyes out because I was in so much pain. The next morning he called me back and agreed to meet me at his office to see what was going on and give me a prescription for pain medicine. My mouth was infected ALREADY so he also gave me an antibiotic. When I was putting my kids in the car to leave, he was sitting in his truck staring at me and he yelled HEY so I turned around. His exact words were "Girl those shorts look good on you!". I was shocked. I didn't know what to do so I just kinda laughed like are you serious?.. That day, I tried to fill my pain meds and because of a medicine I was on, it would have interfered with the pain meds so the pharmacy had to get his approval before filling it. When I heard from him almost 24 hours later, he informed me that the pharmacy told him that the meds would interfere with a medicine I was already on and that he couldn't give them permission to fill it which I had no control over so I just had to stay in pain. 3 weeks later, I call him still in pain and he tells me that there is nothing that he can do because they didn't reopen until Tuesday which was still like 4 or 5 days away and by then my insurance would be cut off. I had called the emergency line which is his house phone prior to talking to him and his wife picked up to tell me that he was at the office seeing a patient already and that he could just see me after her but when he called me back, he said no. I have still been in extreme pain so I went to the emergency room and of course they couldn't do anything because they don't have dental equipment/machines. The other day I went to another dentist and had xrays done, but because I don't have insurance that's all I could do. That dentist told me that I have three teeth with cavities that are all hitting nerves and fillings over top of those cavities and that I will have to have them pulled! They just looked at the right side of my face on the xray tho because that's all that has been hurting but now my left side is also hurting! it feels like needles are stabbing me everywhere in my face!!! I have been in pain now for almost 2 months and now I'm going to have a MINIMUM of three teeth pulled out of my mouth. Mind you, he already pulled 2 and now the left side of my face feels the same as my right. I'm 22 years old and I'm not gonna have any teeth because of this man!!! & I have to deal with the pain every day!

The staff at VFD has been so patient with me through the years and has partnered with me to achieve the smile of my dreams! They answer all my questions and help to provide an accurate quote for any out of pocket expenses I may have. So what's it like going to the dentist during a pandemic? Surprisingly it's pretty normal, going to the dentist during COVID was a major concern for me. I'm happy to report VFD is doing an amazing job keeping everyone healthy and safe. They have limited seating in the waiting area, mask are required. Both the dentist and hygienist wear both a mask and a face shield and there is hand sanitizer everywhere! Long story short if there was a cleanliness award during the pandemic VFD would easily win the award!
