Over the last 5 years or so MAX has certainly improved by adding more fixed bus routes and I thank them for that. My only gripe would be that a couple of times the drivers have seemed very insistent that nobody could be standing while the bus is moving. I understand they don't want anybody to get hurt during sudden stops, but come on in major cities all over the U.S. people do stand on moving busses every day and survive just fine. I'm not opposed to sitting on a bus, but if I (I'm not the smallest person around) have a choice or standing and having a bit of breathing room or sitting and being crammed in next to another person I'll choose standing everyday. TIP: If you have a red, white and blue medicare card showing you receive Medicare benefits you can ride the fixed route busses for free so that's a nice money saver. Just show the bus driver your red, white and blue medicare card and ride to your destination for free. I know this is the case on the fixed route busses, but I do not know if it's the same on the reserved MAX busses or not.

"Mandatory" 20% tip = Poor Service - We were a group of 9 ladies, ranging from 30-60 years of age,…read morevisiting the west side of Michigan for a wine tasting tour. We reserved a limo bus from Holland Limousines to take us on our wine tour. A few weeks prior to our arrival, the coordinator of our trip made a few calls to the limo co. to confirm our trip, the charges, etc & she was told that they were too busy and would need to call back. The day prior to our wine tour, she called again to confirm everything was a go, & this is when she was notified that there was a mandatory 20% tip that we would need to provide to our driver. While we were prepared to tip our driver & tip well (depending on our services and experience) we were kind of surprised that a set amount of tip was considered "mandatory". Our coordinator also let the limo co. know that we would be doing a wine tour & had 5 planned stops on our list. She asked if they would like us to share our list of stops & itinerary with them ahead of time so they could notify our driver. She was told to just give it to the driver the day of. The day of our wine tour, the driver arrived promptly at 12pm. Perfect! As our group loads the bus, all in a very good mood & excited to start our day, we are greeted with much less enthusiasm from the driver. Our coordinator hands the driver the list of wineries with addresses, times that we will be spending at each, drive time in between etc & our driver seemed bothered by this. She was not made aware that we were doing a wine tour with multiple stops & noted that she was not getting good cell service at the moment, so she would have to see if she could get the stops programmed into her phone. No biggie! We all had our phones & let her know if one of us needed to direct her to the first stop, we were happy to do so. We also asked if she had a trash can or bag on board. She looked around almost confused as to why would even ask such a question & told us no. There were no formalities shared with our group at all once we were all on board. We couldn't get our phones to sync with the stereo & there was no help with that. She didn't let us know if there were any glasses on board for us to use. We didn't find any. She didn't let us know where anything was, that there was ice available, nothing. She drops us at our first two stops, which happen to be right next to each other & in a downtown area, and lets us know that she will need to find a place to park the bus & tells our coordinator to give her a call when we are 5 minutes from being finished. We hit our first two stops & as we are finishing up our purchases at our second stop, we give our driver a call. We finish our purchases & stand outside for a minimum of 10 minutes waiting for her to arrive. Let's just say, it took her long enough to get back to us that a few ladies went down the street & purchased items from Alex & Ani. We were having a great time, so we decided not to let the tardiness get to us. We get to our third stop, which is a large winery with a very large driveway, so the driver has plenty of room to park the bus. We spend the 30 minutes, as noted on the itinerary that we gave her, in the winery & head back out with purchases & all. As we are walking out the door, we can clearly see her in the bus, but she appears to be busy on her phone & is not aware that we are walking out the door. So instead of her coming to us, we walk out to the bus, get loaded & head off to our next stop. To keep things short, the next two stops are just the same. There is no picking us up at the door of the winery, we have to walk to her. She is on her phone each time, not paying attention to the fact that her customers are walking out to her. As we get back to our rental house, I hand her a tip that our group felt was more than fair, & we get all of our stuff unloaded. The driver calls me back to the bus & asks me if I was aware that a 20% tip was mandatory. I let her know we were made aware of that, but our group feels that a tip is earned & not just given & I asked her if she felt she earned a 20% tip with the services she provided us that day. She put her hand up & said "OK" very hastily & turned away. I immediately called the limo co. once I got back in the house & let them know that the service we were provided that day was less than satisfactory & that we gave our driver a 15% tip, not the required 20% tip, even though we didn't feel she really even earned that amount. I was told if that is what we felt she deserved, then that is fine. We have used limo services in the past for wine tours & not & have never experienced such terrible customer service or a requirement to give a driver a certain amount of tip. Just be aware when using this co. that your driver is expecting you to give them a 20% tip & will provide less than mediocre service because they already know they are going to get paid.
