It's been a year since All Environmental Design transformed our backyard and we're still EXTREMELY pleased with the work that they did! Nick and Andy were amazing every step of the way. It was a fairly large project, and we financed some of it through the HERO program. When we moved in 2 years ago, our backyard was mainly just a big, ugly rectangle of dirt. Our neighbors tell us that we now have the best backyard in the neighborhood! I did a great deal of research and looking at reviews before reaching out to Nick and Andy. I wanted a company that was local to us and could help us with a drought tolerant design. We weren't sure what we wanted our yard to look like, just that it be drought tolerant and low maintenance. They were open to opinions about plant choices and details along the way. They went shopping with us to order our BBQ island, and gave advice on fire pits. For years my husband and I struggled to keep the faulty and outdated galvanized irrigation system in our front yard alive. Half our sprinkler heads were fused and wouldn't pop-up, the ones that did would water the pavement instead of the grass, large swatches of the yard would go dead, and the whole thing seemed to suck our time, money and energy. With water being our highest utility bill we had thoroughly lost interest in maintaining the headache of our thirsty, weedy turfgrass. When the drought got really bad in 2012 we knew that a transition away from a traditional grass front lawn to the more California Friendly, low-water landscape was something that made sense for the geography of our area, our household budget, and our personal aesthetic. I shopped around for a couple of years to find the right company that I truly wanted to hire for my front yard makeover. I found All Environmental Design on Facebook and I admit I searched through all their photos, projects, descriptions and posts and was delighted to read all the excellent reviews from past clients, and now I know why! I called Nick to schedule a complimentary consultation and he showed up on time to tour my yard and discuss all my wants and needs. Nick was open and honest about the scope of work for our very large corner lot, and it took a bit of saving before I was ready to invest in the project. With that said, their prices were some of the most reasonable I had found, but this was still a large undertaking for a new home-owner like myself. Nick was incredibly helpful and an excellent communicator throughout the entire process! Nick and Andy formulated a detailed design for us in advance so we could feel at ease about exactly what plants would go where, and they integrated all my special requests into the design. Before I knew it my project was underway and Eddie, Cory, and Miguel worked thoroughly and efficiently as a team to demo all the existing plant material as planned. Nick and Andy would check in on their crew multiple times throughout the process and each day my home was left swept up and tidied before the next day's work. I enjoyed watching my team tend to each step with the care. Eddie always took the time to listen to my many questions and provide helpful information along the way. My customized drought-tolerant landscape was installed in a timely fashion and I am incredibly pleased with the results. Nick and Andy were very cognizant of my special request not to over-plant the area because I prefer a more low-maintenance, minimalist look. My yard now features a beautiful dry-laid flagstone courtyard, LED lights that illuminate the low-water trees, a new lamp post, stately boulders, crushed granite, rich mulch, ornamental grasses, succulents and a variety of other low-water plants. I couldn't be happier! I am so very excited to see how it will look in a few years. I've received kind remarks from my neighbors about the new look. Long time Yelp review reader, first time Yelp review writer. This is the first time I've felt compelled to leave a review, so that says something in itself. Nick, Andy, and the rest of the team did a great job on our backyard! My wife and I had a pretty plain and non-functional backyard. It would get insanely hot because there was no cover, terrible lighting, terrible grass (if you could call it that), sprinkler system was more set up to water the fence than the grass, etc. The only reason we went in the backyard was to make it less terrible by pulling weeds from the barren planter that surrounded the perimeter of our backyard and to water a few plants that we purchased ourselves (with the hopes of incorporating them into our backyard). We had a general idea of what we wanted our backyard to to look like, but we didn't know the details of what it should look like. So I looked around on Yelp and reached out to a handful of companies. Ultimately, we chose All Environmental Design because of Nick's responsiveness and professionalism leading up to and during the initial consultation meeting. We told Nick and Andy the general image we had in our head and they were able to fill in the details that we couldn't. They had great insight into what types of plants we should use for what we were trying to accomplish, so they definitely know their stuff (we googled what they told us...it was true). They were also able to incorporate the plants that we already had in pots, which they also knew a lot about. They quoted us 7 business days to complete the project and were able to get it done in 5 days, which was great! I thought their price was very reasonable especially for the quality of the service received. One last thing, while we hired them to redo our backyard they swept our front porch (it was covered in leaves and sticks because it was windy a couple days prior) and they spread the leftover mulch in our front yard planters. I did this in 2016 in October, then we had several rains week after week, This created some issues but Nick and Andy were great. I contracted with All Environmental Design because of their experience with both drought-tolerant landscaping and hardscapes. We have a large property and didn't have any idea how to approach all the work that was needed, including a new wider driveway, new front and back patios, drainage, and new landscaping and irrigation throughout. Nick and Andy broke the project down into understandable and affordable phases that resulted in a beautiful transformation of the entire front yard and a great head start in the backyard. Nick's communication throughout the project was superb, from his immediate response to my initial request through answering questions about the drip irrigation system after the project was completed. The work was done completely on time and within budget, even with several days of rain. He took care of all aspects of the job, including coordinating with the city and an insurance adjuster. Andy was on site to help plan the project and I'm sure he worked hard behind the scenes to make sure the project turned out perfectly. The project foreman, Cory, was on top of all of the work and was a pleasure to work with every day. The project required a lot of labor, and everyone on the job was professional and friendly throughout the project. My favorite part of the process was choosing the plants for the front yard. Our city has a requirement that at least 50% of the front yard must include living plants. Even though all of the plants selected for our yard are drought tolerant and our water usage is now very minimal, the yard is filled with flowering plants and interesting foliage. They even reused the stepping stones and rocks to create an extra pathway. They thought through every detail and made the whole process worry free for me. It was by chance that I came across All Environmental and I'm so glad I did! As I'm currently in the middle of a huge overhaul in my condo and windows won't be coming until later, I decided a quote wouldn't hurt. In Aug 2016 we sought drought resistant landscaping for our front lot and found All Environmental Design on Angie's list. We should have seen the early red flag when Andy, the contractor, said we were not eligible for the Angie's list discount. Although his cost was high, we were highly motivated and we hoped that the high cost would translate into high quality of the project. The project turned out boring and ordinary, so we had to add hardscaping to enhance the appearance, and of course, we paid them for the additional work. As the landscape design grew in and filled in, it became clear that some of the choices Andy made for plantings overgrew the space he placed them in, and some of the smaller plants he planted died because of lack of sunlight by the now excessively large plants around them. Attempts to trim the very large plants caused them to gradually die, even though we had the trimmings done professionally and carefully. Throughout this process, we made phone calls and sent emails to Andy, but these were met with barriers of all kinds. He finally set up an appointment, but he was a no-show; there was never a re-schedule, let alone an apology. In two very recent emails we sent, the response was that they would be happy to provide "maintenance" for a mere $700 every year! We explained this was not about maintenance, but rather we wanted to discuss a design flaw with respect to the design of plantings that were not appropriate for the size or spacing on our lot. We asked for a consultation, but they have summarily ignored our request. In summary, we did not get a high value for their high end cost of landscaping, and in fact, feel their design was flawed in terms of choice of plant size for our property. They tried to put the failure on our shoulders, as if we did not maintain the landscaping, and pushed us for an excessive amount of money for them to provide maintenance-- but again, this had nothing to do with lack of maintenance and everything to do with their failed design of plantings and spacing, so we declined. We have been left in the lurch. So, if you are reading this, we would urge you to get landscaping services elsewhere. Don't expect their high cost will deliver with high professionalism. I decided to replace the ugly red apple ground cover & a lot of thirsty plants across a large portion of my back yard..approx. 95x 20 foot across. I had the area cleared out & leveled & then had All Environmental Design come in & design a drip system & new drought resistant plants & fill the area in with bark. Nick also put in a beautiful riverbed that matched the garden wall that I had put in. I also had Nick & Andy change out a lot of sprinkler heads that were wasting water. The were able to complete the job in one full day! The area looks so much better & I have reduced my water usage by about 1/3. I also plan on having Nick come back in the fall & replenish the bark to add more moisture to the area. He worked with me & always answered my phone calls & e-mails!
