Another plumber referred by a friend came and took a look after and safely assessed that the water heater was still working and safe to use and he re-lit the pilot light for me for $75. The other plumber actually laughed out loud when I told him the estimate that Adam gave me. He could not believe that I was given an estimate of $1900 for labor to install a 50 gallon water heater that cost about $750. Always comparison shop, ALWAYS. Also, when I go my estimate, I noted that the price for installing a "Galvanized Steel Nipple" was $774.25. The drain replacement was priced at $1623. Totalling $2,297. This seemed really high to me. I excused myself and looked on line for a price of the nipple. That nipple sold on line for $71. I mentioned that to the plumber and he said he was not installing a galvanized steel nipple but a brass one. I said but that is not what the invoice says...I never found out how much labor cost....In short, everything about this situation was suspect. I declined their services and contacted another company.
