I unfortunately didn't catch the inspector's name, but he was amazing and looked over my kitchen and bathroom where I've been dealing with persistent leaks from an upstairs neighbor and shoddily done repairs by my property manager's "mold guys". He identified areas of moisture that I wasn't aware of and took his time making sure everything was looked over. He also took samples I requested. I have worked with Big Apple twice now. The first time I experienced a minor flood in the home from my flat roof, I didn't see the damage right away. By the time I saw the actual impact on my ceiling and wall paint, and then my wallpaper, the cost of repair had grown quite expensive. I worked with Big Apple to identify and remove mold, then had to hire a contractor to repair the work. I think Big Apple offers remodeling services, but I wanted to work with my renovation team. During the vendor quoting process, I was advised to call right away in the future to ensure the best chance at help from my insurance as well as the ability to stop the water damage in its tracks with the greatest cost efficiency. For example, technicians can remove the baseboards/molding to put industrial dehumidifying tubes in the wall to prevent more damage. So, several months later, the upstairs apartment had a clogged toilet and flooded our bathroom ceiling. Even though it was 1-2am, I called Big Apple, and David took my call right away. I was so relieved to receive advice, and after evaluating the tradeoffs, we scheduled a team to come the next morning. Unfortunately, the technicians consistently fail to match arrival time expectations so be mindful that estimated arrival times may be off by a few hours. They were in and out in less than 2 hours, removed my ceiling and wet insulation, and set up industrial dehumidifiers. They also helped me check the upstairs apartment restroom for any further issues. I am grateful for the fair pricing and speedy help that Big Apple has been able to provide me. There is less communication/headsup on when they come back to pick up their equipment, but it's typically a couple or more days later depending on the extent of the water damage. If planning on utilizing insurance, definitely keep or ask for photos of the moisture readings. read more

I chose Big Apple after a lot of comparison shopping for a mold report. The technician was very nice and explained everything he was doing, and both he and the owner, David, gave us a lot of good information about how the mold process works. We had a slight hiccup with receiving the report when expected, it was delayed past the normal 1-2 day turn around, and it ended up not showing as much mold as was discovered in remediation, but David went above and beyond to make up for the issues and provided some discounted rebuilding work that more than made up for it. He really cares that every customer is satisfied with the service. He even replaced our rag towels that accidentally got thrown out during the rebuilding work (to be fair, they were in a dirty heap near the work area waiting to go in the wash), no questions asked. Its $650 "MoldReport" report (generated by EMLab P&K and approved by TestAmerica; you can see an example of such a report at http://moldreport.com/mold_services.html ) showed only 1 out of 20 mold indicators in our home, one room of which had a leak, as "moderate," and the 19 other indicators a "low." Yet Big Apple Mold Removal's additional, scaremongering, 22-page "report" of its own, crammed with descriptions of many molds and the worst illnesses they might induce, said that "elevated mold conditions exist"; that "professional mold remediation recommended" to be "be performed as soon as possible," with use of "polyethylene sheeting for sealing area, use of Negative Air Units, HEPA filters and air scrubbers" over "three extended-shift workdays performed by a licensed and certified crew." We retested with a firm that did ONLY testing, and NOT also offer abatement (Environmental ACS Services, its report generated by AmeriSci Bio-Chem). It detected no mold in our home, only "elevated moisture" around the leak area, whose discoloration was chemically stained from building materials, not from any fungus. Came away with a feeling that they are a highly trustworthy organization. Rare these days in the service industry. They were one of two companies in NYC metro with great reviews. I called both, and Big Apple has a policy where they do an inspection for no fee to start. (The other requires testing fee at a minimum in the onsite visit). Once BigApple does a visible inspection, if they believe there is an issue, you can order tests. Felt this gave a lot of peace of mind going in, that we could keep costs in line, and that we weren't going to get ripped off. I called in and requested a routine on site visit to my new condo apartment in Brooklyn. The owner and his team mate showed up with a variety of high tech moisture seeking and mold inspection equipment and gave a thorough examination of all areas of the apartment. We very luckily did not have any issues, and in this case were delighted that we spared any substantial expense, and also that the owner was so polite and professional despite the amount of time they spent. Excellent, responsive customer service, knowledgeable staff, and a job well done (shoutout to David and Brigador!). My neighbor's dishwasher hose cracked and flooded their apartment, which subsequently leaked into my wall and floor (the joys of Manhattan living). At the time, I only saw mold, had no idea that this happened. I called Big Apple and a few other companies to compare. Out of all the companies, Big Apple was the most flexible. They weren't pushy. They worked with me on my concerns, like "should I do an inspection?" "how will I pay for this?" and "will my floor look different after we open it up?" etc. Every step of the way, they guided and educated me. When the contractors (Patrick and team) came to do the mold remediation, they were all very responsive to my questions. They opened up the wall and floor in a day, and then spent 4-days rebuilding. For the rebuild, Big Apple used a subcontractor, Runie and Walter, who were both great! I enjoyed their work so much that I asked Runie to stay on to paint my entire apartment and bathroom. I'm glad I did because he also used the time to touch up his work from the rebuild. The paint dried funny in some parts and the wood floor needed a new polish. My roommate and I have been suffering from water damage and mold in our apartment. After a month of our landlord dodging repairs, the landlord did a patch paint job to try and hide the long term damage that makes our apartment unsustainable to live in. We were still experiencing health issues so we called around and Big Apple Mold was one of the only places that made time for us the next day. They didn't bullshit around with the process over the phone and tried to oversell me on their expertise. When David the technician saw the patch job that had been done, he expressed immediate concern for our living situation. His actual words were, "I don't like what I'm seeing." He put in a lot of extra effort to make sure that we had every form of documentation regarding the water damage in our apartment.  The inspection itself involved a lot of different equipment. He used both old school and electronic technology to show why the water damage was present. Once he found the large amounts of water levels hidden behind the paint job, he took tons of photos for evidence, videos of him recommending the best next steps for properly taking care of the water damage (such as actually using equipment to dry the area before painting), air quality tests, and samples. He explained why the patch job our landlord performed would not be a long-term solution, and tried to make sure we had as much on our side as possible in this difficult situation. He even checked the rest of our apartment outside of the two main water-damaged rooms just to make sure we were safe. David was extremely caring and cautious throughout the inspection with no stone unturned. He has a really good heart and is really looking out for his clients. These guys are the best! No really- Don't waste your time with another company. We called Big Apple prior to purchasing a new apartment because we found black mold and were very concerned. Annabel was very nice, knowledgeable, and very helpful over the phone. David & Kenny arrived prepared with their equipment to give us a free estimate. They were thorough and checked every part of the apartment. They assured us that it was not a big job and easy to take care of, and also gave us an estimate of how much the job would cost. After closing on our new place, I got an estimate from a local company just to compare. The guy way overestimated the type of work that needed to be done and wanted to charge for things he "thought" needed to be done. David is not like that at all. Nightmare scenario: Your guests flood your extra bedroom and bathroom in a preserved 1960's house in Bergen County NJ, as they forgot to shut off the spa handled shower head and forget to tell you about it!!! Saving grace: 24hours later I reach out to Big Apple Mold Removal on a late Saturday night and I actually get a human being on the phone who helps schedule an appointment by following Monday! They send two technicians who assessed the situation promptly and installed blowers and heaters to dry out the 8 x 15ft room to remain on for the next 72 hours.
