We've rented from Hengehold twice for Burning Man, 2024 (15' box truck) and 2025 (24' box truck)…read more We've had bad experiences with other rental companies in the past (U-Haul, Enterprise, you name it) so we wanted to go with a local company that seemed to invest a lot in a great customer experience. The first time had no issues. The second time, the truck failed on us Friday night [more details are below], and we had to get a last-minute rental from Enterprise, while also locating a parking lot where we could leave the faulty truck. Hengehold was not reachable because they are not open on the weekends. Then, we had to spend time/energy unloading and reloading a new truck, and a friend had to stick around on Monday to eventually get that truck towed. Hengehold refunded us the full amount. Knowing the Burning Man general schedule (which is the same every year), and as a business that must draw in a ton of revenue from the event, I'm surprised that they are not open on that Saturday/Sunday to help with these issues and provide replacements. I'm leaving 2 stars here (instead of 1) because their customer service (when they're open) has been easy to talk to and work with (including the refund part), and because we still had a positive experience the first time. We will still consider renting with them in the future. ================== More details on the second time --- We drove the truck from Palo Alto to San Francisco on Friday, and spent the day loading in our supplies. We drove the truck out that night from SF headed towards Reno, and within 1 mile it started malfunctioning. The dash said there was an SCR malfunction (see picture) & the truck started beeping. We called a technician (not affiliated with Hengehold, since it was out of hours) who spent an hour with us running tests and said there was a clogged DEF catalytic converter. He hypothesized that possibly 1) just over time they wear down or 2) bad DEF in there that caused it to happen faster than normal timeline. He said there would be large overhaul of the system needed and that it was not fixable over night. "It's absolutely not getting to Reno". When we started driving again it wouldn't go more than 2 mph.

Upon arriving I was given a warm welcome and walked though the lot with Ray and inspected the vans I was interested in and took two of them out for a test drive. I finally decided on the one I wanted, made my purchase and was on my way. But here's the real story. Ray called me two weeks after the purchase to see how the things were. The fact is we were having a few issue. He told me to bring it back and he would take care of it. Ray and his staff are professional and service oriented. They stand behind what they sell and are extremely fare. It was a pleasure doing business with Royal Motors and they are the only place I will buy work vans.

I have had my previous Work Whip a Freight liner since it was new and it has served me well. My Freight liner was retired at the end of 2011. The Company I work for is replacing the old fleet of Freight liners with 3 different brands Freight liner, Volvo and Kenworth. The reason that the company didn't go all Freight liner is that they couldn't meet the deadline set . Of all 3 brands ordered 10 are Kenworth T660 . The Kenworth are the most expensive of the 3 ordered $10,000 more than the other 2. I was lucky to be assigned a Glacier White 2012 T660 Kenworth as my new Work Whip. Its like driving the Lexus of the Truck world. The T660 Features a Set Back Front Axle for an Excellent and Tighter turning radius, Huckbolted Cab for a super strong Cab , HID Headlights, 3 Hole Gusseted Cross members for added Frame Strength, Piano Hinged Cab doors. Aerodynamic Steel Fairings , AM/FM/CD/MP3 Stereo, 40 Channel CB, Anti Collision Sonar, Air Ride Seats,Electric 5th Wheel Lock and a Digital Dash. I received my new Work Whip with 99 Miles on it . It just turned 3000 Miles and I am quite happy with my new Whip.

The truck had some sensors for the engine come on and they sent us a bill for over 5 thousand dollars claiming it was our fault because there was water in the diesel fuel. They never actually provided any proof of that claim when requested. After we turned the truck in they charged us 4 thousand dollars for some cosmetic damage that occured over the life of the truck. I would definitely use anyone else besides Pape Kenworth because they will look for ways to get money out of you when it isn't justified. One of the worst if not the worst experience I've ever gone through.

I told him if it was in great shape I'd come in to get the truck but then he told me he had another buyer.
