No frills dive bar, I usually stick to bottled beer here, but their outdoor area is cool, weather permitting

If you know me, you know that I'm a huge fan of the dive bar, because really, what's not to like? This place is divey, but not TOO divey, so it's great. Not to mention, the rumors of this place's happy hour are actually true. Having said that, I came in here the other day for the first time, after the happy hour was over. Sad face right....? Well don't fret Yelpers, because even though the drinks are $3 you call its during happy hour, the price jumps up to an unreasonable $4 after the happy hour is over. What! Yea that's right...it jumps up only $1 per drink! Sweet right?! Not to mention, the bartender has a tendency to pour those drinks STRONG. They pour drinks like they hate the sight of alcohol and need to get rid of it because they don't want any in their bar. Come here...drink...be merry.... read more

Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name. And their always glad you came. Melting pot of everyone. Good prices, not the best in decor but you came to drink and get drunk right? Alibi sometimes smells like an old keg farted, but that's dive bars for you. This is the least pretentious place I've found to drink within a 10 minute walk of my apartment. Big Buck Hunter, pool, bar games, plus the deck make it fun for the whole family. read more

"THIS IS MY BAR SO YOU CAN SHUT THE F--K UP YOU STUPID F--KING B-TCH" This is the direct quote from the upstanding bartender with the (Irish?) accent, shouted at a woman seated at the bar a few nights ago. I heard the woman vaguely protest being cursed at so loud, and tell the bartender he was being unfair to her (you could say that again). I heard this while seated in the very back with a friend, and it was really jarring. I can't say I've ever seen or heard a bartender be that nasty to a person, especially a woman (you would hope people might jump to her honor and call him a sexist pig.. but alas I saw no such valor). I don't know what happened after that. I do know, however, there is really no excuse to warrant that type of behavior-- and with so many bars in the neighborhood there is no reason to ever go back. I wish I had gone up to her and ask her if she was ok and offer her my sympathy for such ugly mistreatment. I had already been yelled at earlier in the night by the angry bouncer that was closing the back patio when we weren't moving inside fast enough, so maybe this is the tradeoff for $5 well drinks? Daydrinking FTW. I almost don't want to write this because I so appreciate cheap drinks in a mostly empty bar on a sultry afternoon, but I know I would have appreciated the info, so I suppose I'll share the secret. Happy Hour drinks (I believe this is 3-7pm) are three dollars. Whatever you want. Three bucks. Swoon. In the awful heat of late, my cousin and I recently ambled up the hill to Dekalb to find some cheaply-priced 3pm beverages at the highly-recommended to us dive, Alibi. We were not disappointed. When we arrived the bartender was apparently MIA - or so we were informed by a gentleman sitting at the other end of the bar that said tender would BRB. Happy to cool off for a moment, we waited patiently and then ordered three dollar beverages (I got a Brooklyn summer ale and she got a whiskey drink) from the friendly and laissez-fair barman. While we were here, no one else really came in, cept a few old guys, and the atmosphere was perfect for a relaxing afternoon, killing time before we met a friend. I am trying to decide if the gentleman at the end of the bar was playing Nirvana on the jukebox to impress us (fail) or what... but either way, it was perfect for the divey, sleepy, hot afternoon drinking experience. I don't actually know that I'd want to come in here when it's insane at night - the capacity on the wall says 72 persons, so this place obviously gets smooshed up easily at night, considering it's excellent deals. However, for afternoon/evening drinking, Alibi is on the top of my list. read more

I've been coming to this bar off and on for the few years I've been in the neighborhood, and although it's no place to bring a first date, it's a good, no frills dive. The clientele is a good mix of locals and newcomers, and I have noticed less and less of the creepy dudes I used to see lurking when I went in. I go less often these days as they took away the best beer they had on tap over the summer and replaced it with something wussy like Shock Top. They also raised their prices within the past month, so you get 50 cents back when you order a beer. I love the stoic bartenders and the fact that they'll turn down the volume on the speaker system when somebody puts a crappy song on the jukebox. I've noticed a lot of out-of-towners complaining about the bartending, but for me it gives the place its hard-nosed charm. They can be coarse but they can also be playful and charming in their ways. They're locals, deal with it. Tough customers surround the pool table so don't expect to show up and play a casual game or two. Oh, also. Their well whiskey is Jack. Try finding another bar within 5 miles serving you such a generously-poured whiskey soda for $5. read more

i personally cannot speak to the crowd at this place on any other night but a monday. front room was crowded and the door to the patio was SLAMMED SO LOUD. SO OFTEN. and there was a pervasive sent of B.O. and weed that seemed to float over the whole place. "so, molly," you may ask, "why the 5 stars then?" well, humble reader, i'll tell you. the happy hour, which lasts until 8 p.m., provided me with $3 jameson and ginger ale. and that, my friends, is "as good as it gets." read more

Dive Bar par excellence...dirty and cheap...great tunes...full of locals and Pratt students soaking in cheap drinks...nice fireplace to wallow in your whiskey...though going upscale lately with a new bathroom...Doc or Wellies no longer required to pee...where is the neighborhood headed??? read more

This place is truly a shit hole. Another yelper summed it up best, it's like an old friend who's not very interesting but reliable. That said, not once but twice. Drinks are cheap, the jukebox generally holds good tunes. Usually full of Pratt students and assorted locals. It's generally filthy and if your with the right people it can be a good time. read more

Yeah, it was and apparently still is a hole. But I spent four years worth of stumbling home early Friday mornings after spending most of Thursday nights here while attending Pratt, so I have a soft spot in my heart for the place. It was a big part of my life at one time. Haven't been back in forever and probably never will, but it's good to hear the old dive is still in business. read more

Dive bar. Meaning smelly, clannish, poorly furnished, etc. Yeah, it's that. Manginas who travel long distances to bask in its dismal glory will be disappointed. It smells like mildew, ass, cigarettes and mung beer. I go because it's really close and I know my wife will not be there. I would never travel miles to go here or to go to some dive near you because it would smell funny and the bartender would be rude and- it's a dive bar, not freakin Versailles. But good afternoon drinking, get out of the house drinking, play pool and drink drinking, and so on. An earlier yelper was right: the younger guys are a bunch of tampons. Although if you are immunologically challenged, perhaps Monsieur would consider the bottled beer selection rather than the 4th generation lipsticked pint glasses. read more

Having decamped from the East Village for cheaper pastures, I've found this place to be a reasonable substitute for my favorite dive bar, The Grassroots Tavern. Dark, dirty, and suitably cave-like, this Ft. Greene institution often has a surprisingly mixed clientele, ranging from hipsters to old construction workers (especially the old guy who wears his toolbelt whilst perched on his bar stool - he gives me the evil eye every now and again), but all enjoy the English Premiership soccer on the one dusty 19" TV. The only thing keeping me from giving this great dive bar a 5 star rating is the unbelievably rude bar staff. The regulars, the pool games, the garden and the prices all make this the great bar that it is. However, I have never ever encountered such rude bar staff in all my years of moving around the country and visiting many many dive bars. I can appreciate the fact that you can't expect to walk in on your first visit and be treated like family. However after almost a dozen visits in two months I am shocked that the bar staff still fails to smile or even say hello when you walk in the door. And I'm not talking about a busy night, I'm talking about a slow Saturday afternoon. And it's not like I don't tip because I tend to over tip. Especially when the prices are so low. I just don't get it. And to be honest, I doubt I'll go back to a place that allows their bar staff to be so rude to the very people who pay the bills week after week. There are too many other places in Brooklyn to be going to a place that acts like they don't care if you come in at all. I will definitely miss all of the amazing regulars though! read more

For me this place sets a new standard in Brooklyn dive bars. Somewhere between Sunny's and Lucky 13 in my books--really genuine folks, real grime on that bar. None of the faux haute-beer trappings of a Boat or middle-road O'Connor's. read more

Not my favorite dive bar but its good. Stick to the bottled beer the tap beer is way off. Spent a few of my Thursday nights here while attending Pratt. Dealing with cheap college kids and some of the riff raff that stumbles in there bartenders might not be the friendliest but its part of the places charm. read more

A super-divey oasis from the rest of the bars on Dekalb. The people are friendly, the bartender is gruff and the drinks are STRONG. This place is such a breath of fresh air from the more pretentious bars surrounding it, but obviously not a literal breath of fresh air since it usually smells like cigarettes, stale beer and sweat as a dive bar should. It's just laid-back and fun. Tips: keep your orders basic (beer, shots, simple mixed drinks), unless you want to see what pure hatred looks like on the face of a bartender who just heard a group of girls order pomegranate martinis. Also, I was not exaggerating about the drinks- pace yourself if you order something mixed and you'll thank me in the morning. read more

I have a soft spot in my heart for the Alibi, because it was the first time I patronized a bar (underage) and one of my early trips to New York when my sister was attending nearby Pratt. I remember being so surprised and disturbed because there was a suspicious cigarette-looking thing on the bathroom floor. Ahhh innocence. I drank screwdrivers in this dive and helped escort a drunk Pratt student home and felt horrible the next day. I will never forget it. read more

I like visiting New York, I love hanging out with my friends there, but in the past I have never had the thought pop into my head that I would want to live there. Until the crazy ass ice storm of October 29th, 2011. I was trying to walk to Dekalb Market, my shoes were soaked completely through, I had to jump over a tree that fell over on the sidewalk and almost hit a lady in front of me, and it was obvious that the day was over. I hopped into Alibi, watched the bartender carve a pumpkin while my coat was over the fireplace, had great drinks, played pool, shot the shit, and generally had an amazing time all with complete strangers. Also, my 5th star for bars is almost exclusively reserved for bathroom graffiti entertainment/cleverness. This place disappoints in not one area. read more

Alibi is a total shithole but oddly, I'm not mad at that, especially since they are one of the few bars around that is open late. The jukebox has some cool tunes, they have a pool table, the crowd is always lively and strangers engage with strangers left and right, and the bartenders are surly assholes but in a funny absurdist way that makes you laugh it off because I think they just like fucking with people. I've never had a boring time here. read more

This place comes to mind when ever some one says dive bar. Nothing at all special about this place. Raggitty taggity but in a nice kinda way. Its just super unpretentious and ultra welcoming. I'd drink there in my pajammies if I were a local. No special beers or anything just a home feeling. Brooklyn Public House is right across the street with all the beer selection you could want but that place's vibe could depress the Cool Aid man. Back to Alibi usually. Jukebox is great though. And people there have good music taste. That counts for something. Bartenders are a little rough looking an no nonsense but they're cool guys. Not the best crowd but everyone pretty much does their own thing. There's a few cool characters there from time to time. Drank there Christmas night and for some reason even though I never smoke, I wanted a cig (don't judge me) So I bummed a cig off a stranger and instead of passing me one from a pack he rolled one himself for me while telling me his life story. Thought that was cool for some reason. Also on Christmas a bunch of dudes came in dressed in Richard Simmons drag while doing the "homie" (Boondocks reference). That was not cool for some reason. All around just sweet place to lose a few hours and grab some cheap drinks. One of my tops. read more

The Alibi is a cool little dive bar that doesn't have much to offer, but the beer is cold, the drinks are cheap, and they have a pool table & juke box to pass the time. The beers that they have on tap are all $5 for the exception of Bud and Bud Light which are $3.50. During their happy hour..all the beers are $3 bucks each. I should also mention that it's a cash only establishment...so make sure you hit an ATM before heading over. read more

The bartender was pretty friendly (We were 2 girls late on a weeknight when it wasn't that busy), but this place is extremely dirty with falling apart chairs and crazy drunks. Take this place for what it is; a place to get your drink on! I've really enjoyed it the few times I've been. Most recently a friend and myself held down a couple barstools while we knocked back beers. Another time a group of us just about signed a lease on the dinky, tore-up corner table. That time was a mini reunion so we all got pretty sauced. When the metal started making it's way out of the juke we got good and loud; not a problem! I like dive bars and this one is your basic. Pool table. Buck hunter (safari). Bearded man with a book at the bar that buys my male friend a drink with no explanation. I can't swing this place when it's packed with Pratt students (avoid Thursdays), but it's a dependable neighborhood spot for a draft beer. I don't know what exactly makes me so indifferent to the place, maybe it's the college bar that is somehow mixed in. read more

This is my local joint and prevails as my favorite bar to hang in the Clinton Hill/Ft Greene. Drinks are super cheap, people are chill and reasonably reflect the neighborhood which is refreshing as the neighborhood continues to gentrify. If I stay in the hood to get a drink 9/10 I will head to alibi... thumbs up. For people outside of the neighborhood its really more of a local place than a destination bar. read more

If you're looking for a spot to be seen or have the chic atmosphere, this is not the place for you. If you want to drink around some honest (and very frank) people in an place that reminds you of what Brooklyn used to be, you might like this place. You do have to be willing to deal with artistic types from Pratt because they tend to frequent here. If you like a good game of pool, you better bring your A-game.
