Originally planned to eat at Shalimar down the road, but the signage of food photos and meal combos put us off. IMO, this cheapens the restaurant and makes it feels a bit lower quality.
We actually happened to pass Ali Raj on the way and my boyfriend noticed that the decor looked very authentic old school English Indian (mirrored walls and ceilings!). Also a bit "seedy" (not in a bad way) as it is upstairs on the second floor of what appears to be an old house, above an English microbrewery. I must say we were pleasantly impressed and thrilled after eating here!
Hopefully more Yelpers will visit and leave many more reviews and photos giving Ali Raj the credit it deserves.
-Delicious Cobra beers on tap. Cheers mate!
-Excellent Poppadoms with chili sauce and mango chutney.
-Meat Samosa- good flavors. The meat was lamb. A bit spicy. Not in traditional pastry dough more like a thin phyllo dough.
-Onion Bahji- perfectly crispy with traditional mint sauce. Great flavor and texture in a ball.
-Chicken Tikka Madras- so spicy and perfect. Chicken tender.
-Special Chicken Jalfrezi- great tomato and onion flavors. The "special" here is the massive amount of fresh green chilis.
-Pilau Rice- soft and flavorful with spices. Perfect for serving with the curries we ordered.
-Naan- didn't seemed to be cooked in a tandoor. It seemed to be cooked in a dry pan and VERY flat. No air or fluff like it should be.
Overall great find. Definitely check This place out if you're in Harrogate!!! read more
