I've been using Z.E.N. Foods off and on for several years now. I just resumed their service after a…read morebreak and, reminded of what great food and service they provide, decided to finally write a long overdue review. I had tried 3 or 4 other food services several years ago and each had their issues/drawbacks (one in particular was very problematic). Once I tried Z.E.N., I've never looked back. The food is fresh, healthy, and for the most part truly delicious! (which was not the case with some of the other services I used). The other great thing is that the menu is entirely customizable: they have their specials of the day for each meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner -- plus snacks and dessert if you go with that particular plan). But if a daily special doesn't appeal to you when you check the weekly menu in your online portal, there is an array of other choices you can make to substitute -- usually several to a dozen or so. I'm kind of a picky eater so I typically wind up substituting 1/3rd to half of the selections, depending. You are also allowed 3 "dislikes" that they will automatically substitute if in their daily specials. Anyway, the customer service is great and the drivers discreet. It may depend on location, but I typically receive my daily delivery between 5pm-7pm every day (meals for the next day). The food is in a zip-tie sealed container for safety, and on several ice packs to stay fresh if you aren't home or otherwise unable to retrieve it immediately; they leave it in the safe spot on my porch where I've indicated. The other thing that's customizable is the delivery schedule: I'm in and out of town a bit, so I month's worth of food deliveries might last 2 or 3 months depending on how I need to space it out (e.g., I typically don't have food delivered on weekends, or if I'm away for a week or two I just put the service on pause for those days -- again, all super easy to adjust in the online portal). And yes, every time I use the service I do lose a few pounds. Highest marks from me, I can't recommend it more highly for anyone who either wants to lose weight, take a break from cooking, or simply want to reset and eat more healthy. The pricing seems fair to me, especially since I'm not spending nearly as much at the grocery store while I'm on the plan.

To whom it may concern,…read more On January 18th and 19th I placed orders in which I'd selected items from the deli that I paid for but didn't receive. I've also received botched orders. I've try to reach them by phone several times, to no avail. When I've called before 1pm, and asked for Tony, my call was put on hold briefly and then disconnected. I even sent an email to their corporate office, but have not heard back from them either. As a long time customer and someone who has benefited from them greatly over the years, I am really baffled at this version of customer service which seems to be only a disservice after all. I am so very sorry that it has come to this. Maybe somebody in a position of authority will see this lonely email and helped rectify the problem. I truly hope so!! Very truly yours, Lisa K

Their menu features 5 different sets options, which include nigiri, sashimi, rolls, and sides. I was SO impressed with the high quality and freshness of every cut of fish, as well as how generous the portions in each bento box was, especially for the price point! I expected so much more out of this spot since Chef Nakazawa is a michelin star sushi chef from New…read moreYork but sadly, it just didn't hit the mark. I ordered for pick-up at 11:30 and the initial notification from the restaurant stated my food would be ready by 11:45. I knew parking would be bad so I left a little early and at 11:24 I received a message saying my order was ready. If this was almost any other type of cold food, I think it would be fine to let the food sit and wait. But for hot foods or sushi like this, a 20 minute jump in time isn't great for someone expecting their order at least at 11:30 so although I appreciate my food being ready sooner, it's not always a good thing. The other issue is the kitchen or pick-up area. HiDozo Van Nuys is in a ghost kitchen set up with a tiny lobby and no signs or directions on whether you're even in the right space because you don't know which restaurants are here. I had to deal with 5-6 food delivery drivers that didn't know their heads from their asses and just hung out in the lobby. There is one girl working that is very sweet and trying to manage it all but this just isn't an ideal pick-up location. I ordered the Deep Dive box $54 along with an order of chu-toro $8 and unagi $8. There is no question that the food looks stunning and the presentation is exceptional. The bags and boxes are all high quality and better than what you typically find for takeout from Sugarfish. Sadly the actual sushi presented a mixed bag of feelings. I started with the tuna sashimi which was cut perfectly and tasted great, then moved onto some of the nigiri including the hotate, salmon, albacore, and hamachi. The fish is all absolutely delicious, buttery, rich, tender, and flavorful. The issue comes down to the rice. The rice is pretty dry and bland. It's also clear that nobody is hand forming this rice. It looks WAY too perfect and symmetrical, and every piece looks exactly the same. Even the most skilled sushi chef with decades of experience could not get sushi rice this exact every single time. So I did a little digging and videos on their Instagram don't show the rice ever being formed by the chefs. It's always ready and the chef simply takes it from one hand, adds the fish, and forms the fish over the rice, never once actually making the rice himself. Before I moved onto the tuna nigiri I had the unagi and although soft and buttery, it was ice cold and clearly not charred or grilled. For $8 (which mind you, is the same price as the chu-toro) I would've expected quality at the level of the chu-toro. As for the tuna nigiri they were all fantastic. At least, the fish was. The rice was still meh. The tuna, akami, toro, and chutoro were all buttery, soft, and you could definitely tell them apart. But sadly, once again, the rice was not great. Here's the kicker - the rice in the futomaki roll was actually good. I wouldn't doubt that the fresher rice is kept and used for the rolls because the texture and bite was so much better. The minced tuna was a delight and this was one of my favorites here. Overall, with the price of $70 before tax, it would be nice if HiDozo actually focused on the rice considering a chef of this stature wouldn't and shouldn't neglect the key component of sushi. Any person with a spec of food and cultural insight knows that "sushi" means vinegared rice so the toppings are a second to the rice and don't have to be fish or seafood related. But still, this isn't a place I would revisit or recommend.

Bloody hell -- Cajun Craving is the spot. I walked in expecting solid seafood. I walked out…read morewondering how the hell they haven't been handed a Michelin star already. Let's start with the Cajun shrimp: perfectly cooked, tender, and absolutely drenched in a sauce so flavorful it should come with a warning label. Not salty, not greasy -- just balanced, bold, and outrageously addictive. You taste it once and immediately know someone in that kitchen actually gives a damn. And the crab legs... my god. HUGE, sweet, and steamed to perfection. You crack into them and it's like opening a treasure chest -- except instead of gold, it's pure, buttery, Cajun-kissed heaven. Now the sausage -- whoever seasons that deserves a raise. It doesn't just sit in the bag like an afterthought. It has its own flavor, completely over the top in the best possible way. Smoky, spicy, rich... it punches through the boil like it's auditioning for its own dish. But the real sleeper hit? THE GREEN SAUCE. Off. The. Chain. A straight-up flavor knockout -- bright, herby, tangy, and absolutely lethal in the way good sauces should be. It elevates everything you dip it in. I could drink it. I won't -- but I could. The whole experience? Different -- but in that rare, memorable, "I need to come back tomorrow" kind of way. Cajun Craving is easily one of the best seafood boils in LA. No nonsense, no shortcuts, just pure, serious, crafted flavor. Five stars. Easy. Gordon Ramsay approved.
