The "place on the corner" that literally has everything. Cheap dinners (steak and cheese sub with fries for 5.99, etc.) that are fantastic. I love the buffalo mozzarella cheese sticks. The staff is friendly, and although not the fastest, for the price and quality and the proximity to my place, the tradeoff is unbeatable. I can get grocery items in a pinch, cheap food, ice cream and richies slush, everything else, always leave happy. Portions are huge. read more

I frequent Alexander's quite a bit. It's just one side street from my house so I find myself popping in there very often. PRO's: They make very good subs. Almost 'hidden jewel'-status subs especially in a college town brimming with pizza/sub shops. The food is inexpensive and you get a ton! The $5.99 Steak & Cheese Special (w/Fries) is crippling in the best way possible. As is the Meatball Special & Chicken Parm Special. Breakfast Bombs are also worth a kudo or two. As far as 'corner-stores' go, they seem to have just a bit more to offer. I'm convinced some of these Medfordites are full-on grocery shopping there. If you're a Medford "townie", they have a whole trashy KENO section (with seating). Full ice cream sundae counter(seasonal?) and a great year-round ice cream selection in their freezer as well. CON's: When I first started coming to Alexander's, I was convinced that the entire staff hated their lives. I wouldn't say they're unfriendly, but they just seemed like they're... from Medford. Too genuine to sugar-coat their misery. I rather enjoy their dismal candor. I can relate, because I too am dead inside. Mechanically-speaking, my only gripe is there seems to be zero organization when it comes to ordering/receiving/paying. I've stood in a huddle of several unattended people (there are no lines at Alexanders! Only madness.) while 6 employees are bustling behind the counter (serving food, cutting meat, selling lottery, serving ice-cream, phone, etc). Sometimes I feel like they have TOO MUCH to offer - so much that even they can't keep up with it all. read more

Alexander's is good for last minute grocery needs, but the best thing about it is their recent addition of ColdStone Creamery ice cream! They not only sell a small variety of ColdStone flavors (and several other brands) in their freezer, but they can also prepare most of the ColdStone "signature creations" at their ice cream counter. At just over $3 for the "regular" portion, which is quite large, their prices are better than the real ColdStone locations. I have a service permit for my dog I take her everywhere I walked in a 930 to buy cigarettes. I was allowed in for a moment to wait a long line then when it was my turn I was yelled at. A man before me in line showed me his police badge and I told him I had a permit for the dog I was only buying smokes and he rushed me out. All I wanted was a pack of cigarettes while I waked my dog. I used to live down the street from this place, but I stopped going here even before I moved out of Medford. Their staff were incredibly unfriendly every time I went in the store. Honestly I think it's because they must have thought I was a Tufts student (I'm in my 20s and often carry a backpack since I don't have a car); I get the impression that a lot of Medford residents resent Tufts students. They seemed pretty friendly with the locals, but anytime I would come to the counter they'd promptly adopt an icy cold demeanor. Anyhow, after dealing with this on a regular basis I quit going there. I don't mind if service staff are impersonal because I know working in the service industry isn't exactly the most fun thing to do. But these folks were just consistently downright rude. If their food was good I might have stuck it out, but their food isn't that special either. It's all just run of the mill sandwiches and snack food that you could get at comparable stores in the area (i.e. Bob's Italian, Tedeschi, any other gas station, etc). So if you're in your 20s and want to get treated awfully while ordering mediocre food, then by all means go to Alexander's. read more

I have given this place three shots and each time, I have regretted going there. The employees don't acknowledge you and when they do, they act like you're being a pest. I just ordered a side of chicken tenders and after 10 minutes, the girl who was "cooking" them, asks the other lady working behind the counter, "how do you know when these are cooked?" I MEAN REALLY?? Then they begin poking it with tongs. And yes, they did serve the nearly chopped in half chicken tenders to me. The tenders had no taste at all. What a waste of $5. to the teenagers who have no life other than hanging around a local convenience store----- you obviously have no life and you should respect your elders. if 10 people buy a cup of coffee and every one goes and refills, and refills, their coffee, then alexanders should just give free coffee to the entire city!! maybe the emloyee is doing her job and trying to make sure that the owner makes money instead of giving money away...also, im sure your few sandwiches you get isnt gunna break the bank, so if you dont like the service go somewhere else... at your age ...you should try hanging out at the mall, or a park!......good luck.. i have always been treated with respect by all the employees of alexanders in medford, and totally understand the employees concern of teenagers loitering and mooching off the stores coffee. read more
