Food is mediocre and tastes like it's off of a hospital cafeteria line. The steak tasted frozen and came out gray. Cooked too low for too long, and it's a paper thin steak making it harder to get cooked right. The sauces all come from cans, most of the food though might not be GFS any longer (according to the new owner) but it definitely still comes out of a can. It's just the same mediocre food Midland is best known for. Generic everything, and nothing good. Prime and choice select meats are still trash if they've been frozen and cooked wrong, and that's what this place will get you. The service however was phenomenal. The food came out hot, but definitely not fresh, which isn't the staffs fault for employer choice of food. Overall this places gets a hell no from me. The average age of people who go here seems to be 70s and 80s, which is exactly what I'd expect from here. The 2 stars is simply for the 5/5 for the service. But 4 of us took no more than 3 bites of food and chose a different place to go. read more

This is a solid 3, the 4.5 stars is misleading. Waitress was friendly, but not super attentive. The food was ok. We had Philly cheesesteak, club sandwich and I ordered the cranberry almond salad with chicken. I substituted iceberg lettuce with spring mix. It was good. There is opportunity to elevate that salad. The sandwiches were ok. The bathrooms are clean, but had a smell as if sewer gas was present. My guys - husband and teenager - did not want to eat here again. read more

I like that this restaurant is not a chain. The building is in the mall but next to an entrance. The food has always been delicious! Thick bacon, real butter on my unique english muffin, fast and friendly service and the venue is nice and very clean. They also have an extensive salad bar which is always fresh! We have enjoyed this restaurant didn't days of the week. The food is always top shelf cooked a presented. Their baked potato took me by surprise. Lots of flavors. The Perch Dinner was good but how would anyone would come back to Alex's Railside restaurant if you have to smell and deal that awful sewage smell coming from the restrooms when you trying to eat and how and how come no one who works here hire someone to get rid of the smell, either take care of the sewage smell or go out business and lose your royal customers like me. read more

This is a fine example of a Michigan diner. I was on a 3 hour road trip and needed a bathroom break. Originally stopped at the Panera to relieve the pressure. Aha! It was time for breakfast so I took a chance on this place based on Yelp review. Great for breakfast today. Everything was well prepared and tasty for the wife and I. Service was impeccable. Coffee cups stayed filled although one was decaf and the other regular. My veggie omelet and American fries were done to perfection. Neither over nor under cooked that happens frequently with breakfast potatoes. You enter the restaurant through the mall entrance and it's immediately on your right. Had turkey melt, which was excellent but fries were even better. Sandwich had a smoky teaser which was pleasant. Bun is soft and fresh. Several pairsmeeting at lunchtime Thursday, plus one large party. Overall was calm with oldies not too loud on radio (covered several decades). There was soup and salad bar. Restroom was clean and well stocked. Quick friendly service when I was there. Only rails or trains in sight were in photos and on top of salad bar. read more

We enjoy Alex's, last evening we went to have dinner. I had the baked fish and my wife had the "seafood buffet". The fish was good however the buffet was disappointing. Not a lot of seafood for a buffet, and out of the four proteins offered, three were not very warm. read more

The food, portions and service were top-notch. Although the ambience was OK, it was certainly made up by the service I received. Great menu with, can you believe it, a real live salad bar.
