A lot of people consider Alex and Ani products to be basic. But, I like a lot of what they carry. I have a product (red) bangle charm bracelet that I adore. Especially since a percentage of all product (red) goes to fight hiv/aids in Africa. I've been to a few of their locations but this one in Shadyside is by far my favorite. I'm able to walk from home, the associates are amazing and don't push anything on you. This really is a beautiful store. I didn't know much about it before they opened up shop here (they just opened a few months ago). As far as I know, they are the only Alex and Ani in Pa. There are some other places that sell their stuff, but this is the only actual full store in Pa. Their biggest seller is their bangles, although they do have rings, necklaces, and earrings I believe, as well as some leather bags, candles, and scarves. I like this place... I buy stuff here for my mom/sister/friends and they always love it. I'll usually end up wanting to buy like six or seven different things, so it will add up quickly, but for the most part, their stuff is pretty affordable, and I like that it is hand made in the US. Went here with a friend and played the role of Birthday Gift Consultant, and let me tell you it was tons of fun! As soon as we walked into the store, we were greeted by two of the friendliest associates who were eager to please and help (we were the only two people in the store at the time). All of the jewelry is organized by type and symbol. I have Alex & Ani jewelry but didn't know that it had deeper meanings. This is one of two locations of this jewelry store. The second location opened on April 28 th at Ross Park Mall. They specialize in bangle style bracelets made out of recycled materials and for the most part made of brass. Each charm represents a center set of moods or items that represent your psyche. They also sell various symbol bracelets and I was impressed with some of the religious enamels they had in their collection. In addition to bangle bracelets they carry necklaces and even have a copper collection taken from the Statue of Liberty. Some of the bracelets sold are used for charitable purposes. I found a few of them quiet pretty but hard to look at. They also feature a "limited edition" bracelet each month and of course they have some items themed for Mother's day as well. They also sell necklaces, adjustable rings, candles and even a fragrance scent. I worked with one of the bangles and was having a bit of a difficult time adjusting it to fit my wrist properly. Apparently you can adjust it to make it tighter but once you open it then it will spring back to its original form and you have to start the process over again. Since the charm and two small accessory pieces dangle from your wrist you know they will always be hanging down and I found the weight of the thin wire around the top a bit uncomfortable. I'm only saying that for me. People love to use these bracelets for stacking. Be aware of the fact that their jewelry requires maintenance and for that reason they selling a polishing cloth for $6.00. I have sterling silver jewelry and I have several polishing cloths. Believe me you have to work at that to even get it looking halfway decent from the tarnish. The staff is friendly and tell you how to store it but if you want it looking good then you must clean it weekly. Since the jewelry is adjustable it can be worn by all ages. There are also other stores around the city that carry their merchandise but if you wish to see the full line then you need to come to one of these stores or order online. Located in the Shadyside business district you usually have pay parking but sometimes you can grab a spot on Howe St nearby if you only plan to stay in this area a short time. read more

I visited Alex and Ani (AH-nee) on Walnut Street in Shadyside recently in search of gifts for my mom and sister. I was greeted warmly by a pretty bangle-clad girl that helped me through my shopping experience by explaining the different meanings of the charms adorning their different products (bangles, necklaces, rings, even candles). I eventually settled on a few different bangles and a candle. I enjoyed the positive energy of the store and will likely come back for gifts for my female friends and family, especially since my mom and sister are now hooked. It's always nice being able to get instant gratification and not have to wait for an online purchase to arrive, and that, coupled with the kind service here are the reasons why we come back. The staff has always been hospitable, helpful and knowledgeable. It's nice to be able to find what you are looking for with ease and someone who is a pleasure to deal with. I came into this store to exchange a bracelet that I received as a gift for Christmas. I did not have a receipt, but the price tag was still attached, and it was in the original Alex and Ani box. When I walked in, I stood in front of the sales counter for a good minute before the manager on duty bothered to ask me how she could help me. I told her that I needed to make an exchange and she took one look at the sticker from an independent jeweler that is licensed to sell Alex and Ani affixed to the box and said they couldn't accept the exchange. I politely asked the manager why that is, since the exact same bracelet was in the display case right in front of me. She said that Alex and Ani merchandise purchased at independent jewelers is different than that purchased at Alex and Ani stores. I asked her to prove that to me, and she stammered and hesitated at first, refusing to compare the bracelet that was purchased for me and the bracelet in their display case. She finally took the bracelet out of the display case and was caught in her lie as the bracelet I received was identical to the one they had in stock. She then said "whatever, I'll only exchange this bracelet for the other color of the same design". I told her that was completely ridiculous because the bracelet that I wanted to exchange it for was right next to the bracelet in the display case. She suggested that I exchange the bracelet that I received at the independent jeweler where it was purchased. I asked her if she was suggesting that I drive three hours to Ohio to make the exchange, and she laughed in my face. As a manager at a retail shop myself, I was so mad not only because this was the worst customer service experience of my life, but because I would never dare treat a customer this way. Thankfully, the Alex and Ani store at Ross Park Mall was happy to make the exchange with no questions asked. I reported the Walnut Street Alex and Ani store to Alex and Ani customer service and received a profuse apology from their home office. Hopefully the manager at this store will never speak to someone like that again. read more

Went in before dinner to get my daughter a surprise birthday present. The young lady behind the counter was so nice and so helpful I am really sorry I didn't get her name. The place is right on walnut in shady side so it's easy to get to. The parking garage is right across the street on bellefonte. The selection is excellent and my little girl was very happy... Was so excited that an actual Alex and Ani store opened in Pittsburgh and couldn't wait to go! Finally made it a point to stop in and see what the store had to offer rather than just purchasing my bangles online.. What a bust. So much product was picked over, which I understand to a point because of the holidays, but then they didn't have any boxes or bags!! After spending at least $80 in product, don't tell me to go to the next store over to buy a box/bag. You purchase them and give me something to care my new jewelry in! I don't plan on wasting my time going back unless I need a quick gift. The three stars are for the products and store itself. Sorry Alex and Ani, but maybe I set my expectations too high. read more

I really like this Alex and Ani location. This was my first time going to the store. Everyone is very friendly and wants to help you. I think I got greeted by every worker and asked if I was doing okay/needed help by them throughout the whole time I was there. The girl who helped us was very nice and helpful. She wasn't pushy and gave honest opinions on items I was debating on. She was very patient as well, I looked for a little bit at different charms where she had to keep taking them out of the drawer and putting them back. I now have my first Alex and Ani bracelet that I received as a gift and I loved it! I definitely will be back to this location, I believe it might actually be the only Alex and Ani store in Pittsburgh. read more

Love it here! Staff is great. Store always clean and organized. They pair up with places/ organizations and donate some of their proceeds to the organization. From the time I walked in to this store on Tuesday evening around 7 pm, the two female clerks could not have been more cold, unfriendly and visibly bothered. And mind you, there was NOT A SOUL in the store. I was looking for a Birthday gift idea for my friend and I asked them if they had any bracelets with a golf theme. Again, they just looked at me like I had 2 heads and coldly said "no." Not, "why no we don't, but is there something else we could show you?" Perhaps suggest something else. Nope. And when I asked if they knew if Nordstrom might carry the golf theme, they responded with "does Nordstrom even CARRY A & A?? And from there insinuated that they were probably not real because many stores carry knock offs" I looked at both of them and told them flat out how rude I thought they were. From there, I went across the street to Williams and Sonoma to get a gift idea there. NIGHT AND DAY. First of all, W & S was packed and it didn't even matter. One of the Associates (Renee) went out of her way to help me with ideas. I ended up spending a lot of money. Not only on a gift, but something for myself. I wanted to go back to the Alex & Ani store and pull a Julia Roberts and tell them "BIG mistake. HUGE" I would steer clear of this store. Snobby and for no reason at all. I bet the people at Rolex don't even treat their customers like that. If you want A & A, I suggest you either go to Nordstrom or Allan Jewelers in Beaver, PA. The folks at both of those stores know how to treat customers. read more

Tonight I stopped in at the Alex and Ani store on Walnut Street. My intention was to exchange a bracelet given to me by a good friend who I was meeting for lunch in Shadyside to celebrate my birthday and her final chemo therapy treatment for breast cancer. It was a special day for us. My friend gave me a zodiac bracelet from Alex and Ani. I had never worn one and knew nothing about the products other than being familiar with it through some family members who were fans. I came in with the bracelet in the gift box, in the original bag, with the original tissue paper and a gift card inside the bag. The bracelet was for the wrong zodiac sign and I just wanted to exchange it for my zodiac sign. The sales clerk behind the counter looked at the bracelet and told me that since the little white tag was missing and since I had no gift receipt there was nothing she could do. At that point the manager cane over. This woman didn't say hello, didn't introduce herself at all and proceeded to treat me and my daughter extremely rudely. Stone-faced, not a greeting, just an absolute rude bitch. Once again she told me that since there was a tag missing there was nothing that she could do. She then went to the register to look up the name of my friend and my name and could find no record of the purchase. So, no exchange was possible. Clearly she could have made this simple exchange, and actually delighted in telling me that "no, I won't exchange this." Are you kidding me? She further went on to say that since I had no gift receipt and that some little tag was missing that she wouldn't even exchange the bracelet. She was unbelievably rude. Seriously the WORST customer experience of my life. It was actually embarrassing! This store manager, Ashley, is truly just the most rude person I've come across in Pittsburgh retail-EVER!! Even the sales person behind the counter was clearly embarrassed by how her manager, Ashley, treated me. Obviously I will NEVER set foot in that store again. I felt compelled to post this review because there are lots of gift options and stores out there. My advice to all who read this is to avoid this store and this company. Previous reviews have stated exactly the same experience I had with this vile woman. What a poor example she sets for her staff. She is pathetic and I can't believe that she has ANY job dealing with the public. read more
