This lovely little cafe is practically a stone's throw from Hempstead Heath, one of London's most…read morebeautiful parks. It's located in a picturesque little street with a very village-like feel, next to a Tesco and near a few other shops and restaurants. The interior has been newly-painted, giving a slightly newer look than before, but the food and drinks are just as delicious, though the service hasn't gotten any friendlier. But hey, it can't all be perfect. The menu has a few constants on it, but they also offer seasonal items that vary from week to week, depending on what they have on hand. One week, it can be a heaping plate of wild boar and root vegetables; the next, it can be pumpkin ravioli and a perfectly-cooked chicken dish. Either way, you'll most likely not be disappointed. I can say that their Fried Chicken Kiev dish was absolutely splendid, but the ravioli was a bit on the dry and flavorless side. The menu is also bursting with drinks of all kinds, including milkshakes, fresh juices, and specialty teas. I can vouch for their milkshakes. I'm not sure if it's possible to get a bad milkshake when ice cream is involved, but let me tell you, that Peanut Butter and Banana milkshake with your choice of ice cream leaves nothing to be desired. I did have one problem with my last visit, as I got one of their pastries for the road, and when I got home, I realized it tasted like paint- probably due to the fact that they had just recently painted the place and the pastries had been soaking up the fumes. I highly doubt the paint will still be fresh for your visit, however, so you shouldn't have any problems with that.

Well, this is how I feel about the Kalendar Café: veni, vedi...mmh? Having passed by hundreds of times before when walking to the Heath, I felt it was about time to check it out...and so last night I came here for dinner with my partner. We sat outside, which is one of the two perks of this place. The second perk was the jerk chicken, which in fact was quite delicious. Overall though, I was not that happy: the service was slow, despite it not being that busy even. And while the staff was friendly, they were not engaging at all, which makes my perception of this place being forgettable even stronger. For example, when asking about recommendations from the menu, I got the impression that I was being a bother rather than a customer. Plus, I had placed an order from the daily menu and it wasn't until 15 minutes later that I was informed that this item was no longer available. Due to its excellent location, this place is really busy most of the time; they have lots of walk-in customers. This latter point, I believe, attributes to the fact that they don't really have to try hard and be convincingly good. They simply can exist...

Good, a bit sweet. Messy to eat. 3/5 Truffle fries - good but average 4/5 Polenta - very tasty, a must. 3/5 Duck and waffle - I expected this to be bigger but it was good. I normally prefer chicken but the duck wasn't bad. All the food was decent and the staff were all nice. It's unfortunate that the walk to the restaurant passes by the smelly toilets. Also there was only one lift working that day so it took a little time to get up/down.

I've been looking forward to visiting Duck & Waffle for quite some time. The views are incredible,…read morethe space itself is striking, and on paper it promises that perfect London mix of skyline, late-night energy, and elevated comfort food. Unfortunately, our experience was soured before it even had a chance to begin. My girlfriend and I walked in excited, completely amicable, simply hoping to head upstairs for a bite and drinks. We were greeted by the doorman with an immediate, dismissive "Are you good?" -- not in a welcoming or helpful tone, but in a way that felt skeptical and unnecessarily confrontational. There was no warmth, no "welcome in," no attempt at hospitality. It immediately set an uncomfortable tone. He then proceeded to call upstairs as though he were doing us some sort of favor just by allowing us to go up. The entire interaction felt transactional and judgmental rather than gracious. First impressions matter, especially at a place that positions itself as a premium dining destination. Hospitality begins at the door, not at the table. When we finally made it upstairs, the room was filled with visibly drunk, rowdy groups -- which only made the earlier attitude feel even more misplaced. If that environment is acceptable (and profitable), then two polite guests looking for drinks and food shouldn't be met with suspicion at the entrance. By that point, the damage was done. The initial interaction had already rubbed us the wrong way, and the energy upstairs didn't help. We ultimately decided to leave before even sitting at our table. That's how strongly the first impression impacted us. It's difficult to justify staying somewhere when you don't feel genuinely welcomed from the outset. Duck & Waffle has the potential to be memorable for all the right reasons. But someone representing the brand at the very front needs to understand that hospitality isn't optional -- it's foundational. A simple, respectful welcome would have changed everything. I hope management takes this seriously, because no guest should feel judged or dismissed before they even step inside.

His refined Continental European cuisine is reflected in his menu. The regular menu is supplemented by a prix fixe menu with some tasty choices. The individually crafted desserts are not to missed also. The service was impeccable by the suit & tie servers. With drinks came a board of house-made olive & raisin rolls. Our group of 5 started with a variety of appetizers and all were amazing. Highlights were the Grilled Cuttlefish, smoky in flavor over black wild rice and the twice-baked Cheese Soufflé. The soufflé had an amazing leek sauce. Our friend said her Roasted Jerusalem Artichokes was one of the best salads she's ever had. My son (restaurant namesake) went with a 3 appetizer array as his whole meal with Cheese Croquettes, Grilled Cuttlefish and the Devon Crab Tartare, which was a work of art and taste. The entrees were no less grand. My wife's Wild Sea Bass Fillet was perfect in every way. From the prix fixe menu, my Vienna Schnitzel was super crispy and accompanied by crispy roast potatoes & shredded cabbage. The schnitzel was topped by a rich heritage fried egg embedded with capers & anchovies with flavors that married well with breaded veal. Do not skip dessert! Though the BlackBerry Soufflé might take extra time, it is absolutely worth waiting for. The daily dessert was a Ginger Pudding, though in the UK, it's more a cake with vanilla ice cream and I loved it. For chocolate fiends, the Chocolate Pavé with Chocolate Crumble & Damson Sorbet is killer.
