Toff, Cara and the staff at the Home Grain Bakery have perfected the art of the perfect pie! During my time in Adelaide I must have sampled nearly every "Pie of the Month" and my usual favourite "Beef and Green Peppercorn" which has won the best pie award on numerous occasions. This is my favourite as it is simply delicious. I have never had a chunkier pie! Please open a pie shop in Sydney - as I know you'd do well. I also frequented usually on Saturday mornings so that I could sample the breakfast pie range as well. If I wanted a the 'Bacon Brekky Pie', I needed to be down at the bakery early, because they usually sell out by mid morning. If this pie sells out don't fret because there is usually a Spinach and Mushroom Pie still available. Both breakfast pies are the best I have ever tasted and so much better than a quiche! In addition there are many Vegetarian pie/ pastie options. If you'd like to be temped with some sweet choices - there are lots of Jam Berliners, Finger Buns, Vanilla Slices (Yum), Beerenberg Kitchener Bun,Croissants and donuts. Freshly baked bread loaves are also displayed in the bakery window. Too much choice to choose from. I complement my meals with locally roasted Villere coffee made on the Ruggero Espresso machine. The best coffee 'Down South'! All coffees are served with a little moon shortbread made exclusively by Margaret -Toff's Nan- for the bakery. These should also be packaged for sale as they are delicious. Every time I visit Adelaide - I have to come back for one of Home Grain Bakery's Pies.

Although this isn't my local bakery, I often end up here to sample some of their delicious pastries. The pies, sausage rolls and pasties are so soft and delicate yet so tasty. Filled with fresh vegetables rather than frozen fillings, you can taste the difference. They have a variety of gourmet pies for just a whisker under $5. One of my favorites is the steak and Shiraz pie. The pastry they bake is flaky but at the same time is no too thin or thick. Unlike other bakeries, the pastries (in particular pies) do not fall apart from a heavy filling. This is good as it avoids ending up with an embarrassing mess. Definitely worth a try. Can certainly give most bakeries a run for its money.

It's just inside the shopping centre so there is nowhere to sit and eat but they have a great range of pies and lots of things which are a bit more adventurous than the standard meat pie. They used to have satay chicken which was amazing but it was taken off the menu. But they're always adding new things. The tuna and cheese pie is delicious too. My personal South Australian favourite has always been Pt Elliot bakery and I have never been swayed by minor deviations to Mylor or Echunga or Mt Barker. I still don't know how Willunga Bakery had slipped by my attention despite it being personally recommended by various market goers and bush walkers. Post Saturday morning Willunga Farmer's Market the joint was heaving, every nook and cranny stuffed with families relishing oozing pies and buttery pasties. The fresh baked smell wafted outside and lured us in. We succumbed to a vegetarian pasty to share - just for research purposes, nothing could ever compare or be as good as Pt Elliot...Well I stand corrected - in a scale of 1-10 - 10 being pasty perfection we scored it 9/10. Absolutely worth the deviation off the Victor Harbor Road if you're heading south however don't leave it too late in the day as the hungry hoards of market goers, Saturday sporting Mum and Dad chauffeurs and local footballers and netballers make short work of the steaming, fresh out the oven pastries.
