The Bircher muesli and green juice from Maxwells Grocery- delicious!
    Jess Z.

Absolutely love Maxwells Grocery- it's a healthy foodies dream. It's a regular of mine and their beef burgers are to die for (they also do brekky and veggie burgers which are just as good). The coffee is great and locally sourced from the Fleurieu, as are most of the products sold in store. The cake cabinets are always filled with healthy, raw and not so healthy treats (think raw cheese cakes, bliss balls and brownies) as well as fresh salads and breakfast options like Bircher muesli (my ultimate favourite). Those with diet restrictions will be happy to see a variety of milks and gluten free options for the food/coffees, as well as plenty of gluten free products on the shelves- the willunga pasta is delicious. You can also do your weekly shop here to with plenty of locally sourced meat, organic veggies and Fleurieu cheeses ready to go. Without a doubt one of my favourite cafes/foodie haunts on the Fleurieu!

    Very nice scenery!

They've usually got better quality stuff than the Foodland or Woolies, and are also helpful and know a lot more about their produce. They were a lifesaver for me last Summer, when I'd pop in every week to grab some fresh figs for my cupcakes. From what I've found fresh figs aren't easy to come by in supermarkets down south, so without a tree to pick them from, TC's was a real life saver.

I grabbed a 3kg bag of oranges and lined up at TC's Fruit and Veg in Seaford Central, southern Adelaide. There was one person at each of the 2 cash registers, so I put my bag of oranges down on top of a table of non-orange vegetables for sale and walked between the 2 cash registers to select 3 mushrooms as I passed between the cash registers 2 young people came in the out lane past me. When I came back in the out lane (the same way) between the 2 cash registers, I waited behind the 2 young people, as a male with a trolley was now in the other lane. The 2 young people in front of me finished, to my surprise the mature aged (male) staff at my register said this to me, 'I'm going to serve that man because he was here first.' indicating to the male with the trolley who came along after me, who verbally thanked the male staff member. I stood for a moment not wanting to react in anger. I continued my momentum and placed my oranges and mushrooms on the edge of the counter as the trolley man moved in to be served. I reflected on the fact that the male staff member failed to apologise to me before he said he would serve the other person which was very rude in the first instance. I reflected on the fact the cash register staff member most probably saw me walk out and back in between the registers, if he didn't he was incompetent as a small retail store staff member. I reflected on the fact that when I came back in with my mushrooms, I stared momentarily at the trolley man customer and I know he saw me pick up the 3kg bag of oranges I left on top of the other non-orange vegetables before I walked outside for less than 20 seconds. I reflected on the fact that my 2 items cost more than the trolley man's one item and realised that I had just been a target of gender discrimination by two males about the same age who probably knew each other. They were almost finished with the transaction. No I said to myself as I turned silently walked out the shop towards Woolworths where I bought my required items. I left JCs oranges and mushrooms on his counter never to return. I've lived in Seaford southern Adelaide for 10 years.

Willunga Farmers Market is a one of the oldest - setting a hard to beat bench mark for many that have followed since including Wayville, Victor Harbor and the Market Shed and the new markets popping up everywhere in the 'burbs. Willunga has a bohemian, hippyish flavour however also caters for the wider community of non vegan or food intolerant! Case in point - Lina's sumptuously sweet and sticky Greek sweets. 55 producers share their wares every Saturday morning - bread sells out immediately - I don't think I've every gotten there early enough to take my pick! Last Saturday we sampled and bought 4 different types of recently dried sultana grapes and muscatels; bought some kale seedlings to grow at home; honeycomb (mangowood and blue gum) for a cheese plate; vanilla bean enhanced candied honey; lavender fudge and brownies; freshly picked, unwaxed and unsprayed Pink Lady apples; a punnet of luscious strawberries from Mt Compass; huge heads of new season broccoli; locally produced "fresh and grassy" olive oil and basil pesto. We finished our morning's forage with a Warrakilla Portuguese tart and a freshly made "cap" from the coffee stall. Willunga Farmers Market is an institution in the Fleurieu and showcases the areas plenitude of local producers. For us townies a trip down south is the ideal excuse to buy the week's seasonal supplies and then indulge in a very special gourmet breakfast, brunch, lunch or picnic!!

But when you are a veg*an, or keen on local or organic produce, your night off options are usually non-existent or too expensive. What luck then to have a treasure like home based catering business Studio Voodoo so close to home in paradise at Port Willunga. Anna & Matt from Studio Voodoo have a weekly 'foodie Friday' club, with a new menu released early each week on Facebook & via SMS. Orders are then taken via Facebook or SMS, and you then pick up your goodies on a Friday evening between 4pm and 8pm from their gorgeous eco-friendly house. Meals are served on crockery and trays which you return (washed of course!) for re-use so that Studio Voodoo is no waste. The food is all made from local, organic produce and is 100% vegan. There is often a raw dish or two, and gluten free options are clearly marked. Sometimes there is a weekly theme, and other weeks it is a round up of past favourites or new creations. The menus are so tempting, making a choice can be really hard - so there is also a weekly "Share Plate" with small portions of most of the things on the weekly menu, plus extras, enough to feed two people for $30. The share plates always feature freshly home baked Turkish bread sprinkled with sesame, or garlic Turkish. The delicious beetroot hommus also makes regular appearances, perfect for dunking the Turkish bread into! All of the salads are fresh, crunchy and flavoursome. The signature salad has herb, spinach & rocket mix with roast pumpkin, pomegranate, pecans, dates and delicious savoury chickpeas, with dressing on the side for you to add. Studio Voodoo always keep experimenting and coming up with tempting new dishes, like too-cute vegan sliders that came with one of the share plates in January. Also popular are the home made pastas. Stuffed with an ever changing array of house made flavours, including vegan cheese and artichoke with rocket pesto, pistachio and olive tapenade. Now that Autumn is here, abundant root veggies and figs find their way into the menu. Last week the share plate featured a fresh fig & pistachio salad, mushroom pate (with agar jelly!), zuchinni fritters with saffron aoli, bejeweled Mexican rice, and a cheesy artichoke tart with artichoke & pumpkin, plus cute edible flower decoration. The chocolate & beetroot cake with choc-cardamon ganache was particularly delicious and a steal at $8 with plenty for two sweet tooths to enjoy. When they are offered, grab some of the choc-maple ice cream cookie sandwiches too! For more drool inducing pictures and menus check out their Facebook page. Studio Voodoo is an affordable and healthy weekly service with restaurant quality meals. See you there Friday!

I discovered the place when I worked in the area, and even though I don't anymore, I still buy my meat in bulk from them when I can. Very reasonable prices and great produce. We often buy their sausages which are gluten free. When we cook them there's hardly much grease that comes out and it doesn't taste too fatty or oily. A super plus point for me. We've tried all their chicken and pork sausages so far with our favourites being the chicken and cheese. They also sell ready to bake/cook chicken rolls which are actually really delicious. They have a huge range of stuffings, fillings and marinades with their chicken rolls which makes for an easy dinner. It's always fresh, we've never had a bad incident. They also sell schnitzel steaks, both chicken thigh and breast and these Kentucky style ones, do try the kentucky style ones if you can, the breaded crumb has some delicious seasoning. I think to me, they are a great example of a local business and it looks like they're getting fantastic support just by providing good service and great produce.

I was the first to arrive and was directed to an outdoor table by a friendly waitress and was given menus and upon request table water. The birthday girl and the rest of the group arrived and she wanted to sit inside with the aircon. This time an older, very grumpy looking waitress came out and didn't bother trying to hide her annoyance at us wanting to move tables. We went inside and she angrily dragged tables around as loudly as physically possible and threw the chairs in the general direction of the table and stormed off. We were shocked but just ignored it and sat down. We waited about 10 minutes but she didn't go and get our water and menus from outside so I had to do that. There isn't table service so you have to go to the counter and order. I ordered the big breakfast and a hot chocolate. I felt like a coffee but I've been her once before and the coffee was not good. Once again I had to deal with the terrible service from the waitress whilst ordering. She just seemed so angry to be there and made everyone feel very uncomfortable. We were in a large group so with all of us chatting we were being fairly loud. When the waitress came with my hot chocolate I mustn't have heard her the first time because I turned around to her yelling 'HELLOOOO ARE YOU LISTENING?! Here's your drink!' by this point I couldn't help laugh at how unbelievably bad this service was. I wasn't even offended anymore it was just comical. The hot chocolate was divine though. It's just pure melted chocolate, no syrups or powders and you can really taste the difference. I ordered just a basic milk hot chocolate which was quite pricey at $6 but worth it. They had chilli hot chocolate on the menu too and another exotic sounding one. I would have chosen one of those but had heartburn at the time but I'd like to come back and try them. When my breakfast came it was a very generous serving size. It was very average tasting though and far too salty. I was expecting something great for the price so I was disappointed. The homemade baked beans basically just tasted like canned tomatoes which was very disappointing because the Green Room in Willunga has the most amazing homemade ones ever at a cheaper price and I was expecting that sort of standard. Overall I would return for hot chocolate and maybe to try a desert but won't bother for a meal again. Just be prepared for terrible service and avoid the middle aged blonde woman if possible.
