I try to support small business but I won't when the owners or staff treat select people with total disrespect as happened to me today.
I grabbed a 3kg bag of oranges and lined up at TC's Fruit and Veg in Seaford Central, southern Adelaide.
There was one person at each of the 2 cash registers, so I put my bag of oranges down on top of a table of non-orange vegetables for sale and walked between the 2 cash registers to select 3 mushrooms as I passed between the cash registers 2 young people came in the out lane past me. When I came back in the out lane (the same way) between the 2 cash registers, I waited behind the 2 young people, as a male with a trolley was now in the other lane.
The 2 young people in front of me finished, to my surprise the mature aged (male) staff at my register said this to me, 'I'm going to serve that man because he was here first.' indicating to the male with the trolley who came along after me, who verbally thanked the male staff member.
I stood for a moment not wanting to react in anger. I continued my momentum and placed my oranges and mushrooms on the edge of the counter as the trolley man moved in to be served.
I reflected on the fact that the male staff member failed to apologise to me before he said he would serve the other person which was very rude in the first instance.
I reflected on the fact the cash register staff member most probably saw me walk out and back in between the registers, if he didn't he was incompetent as a small retail store staff member.
I reflected on the fact that when I came back in with my mushrooms, I stared momentarily at the trolley man customer and I know he saw me pick up the 3kg bag of oranges I left on top of the other non-orange vegetables before I walked outside for less than 20 seconds.
I reflected on the fact that my 2 items cost more than the trolley man's one item and realised that I had just been a target of gender discrimination by two males about the same age who probably knew each other.
They were almost finished with the transaction. No I said to myself as I turned silently walked out the shop towards Woolworths where I bought my required items. I left JCs oranges and mushrooms on his counter never to return.
