At my last visit, I couldn't resist the lamb and mint patties which later proved to be a hit with the family. I also grabbed a bargain with the twin pack chicken retailed at $8.95, which was perfect for a roast. I love that they stock Beerenberg products here and if you're running out of time and want to avoid another pit stop, pick up some pasta, vegetables and sauces here. For the blokes who love their roasted pig, a spit and mobile coolroom is up for hire. Perfect for those summer barbies. Excellent customer service, clean and bright aisle and the website is a must to go, for weekly specials and recipes. Check out their daily specials on Facebook and Twitter.

But until that day it stands as a land mark for customers turning into the off street car park. It is a direct to the public wholesale butcher offering a fantastic range of meat products any carnivore dreams of and at reasonable prices too. Be sure to sign up for their rewards card and e-mail list to get the latest specials on offer or just look up their website. There are ready to go prepackaged meat packs in the supermarket style fridges or ask for it still mooing from the meat counter display. Want it minced, diced and sliced? No problem, done. A few centre shelves stocked with herbs and spices serve as a quick meal idea and in case a quality butchers knife is required, look no further, they use them why not us. Open 7 days a week so you're never stuck for something to bring to the BBQ.

I spoke to one of the staff (possibly the owner) who said he had a few f the small hams available but didn't want to short change me. When I saw the 3 kilo leg he called 'small', I was more than happy to just take that home and said as much. He thought for a second and then asked me if I liked fritz. I said yes (because, honestly, who doesn't love fritz?) so he said, 'Alright, I'll make up the difference for you.' and gave me 500g of free fritz sausage. Absolutely wonderful customer service and I know the butcher I'll be coming to next! PS, fritz tastes lovely, I'll let you know how we got with the ham. Update: ham was fantastic. It did two Christmas lunches plus leftovers for a week!

Cimarosti Bros smoke their own smallgoods and make their own sausages. Nothing is too much trouble for the team of friendly butchers, so what every joint of meat you need just ask and someone will prepare it for you no worries. They also stock local fish, squid and gluten free sausages in the fridge and freezer. Plus a range of local produce such as eggs, olive oil and honey.

Everybody needs a local late night supermarket and the Marion IGA Foodland is a good one. The thing…read moreabout many smaller, late night supermarkets is that things can often be overpriced so if you run out of something late at night you end up paying a fortune for it. Not so here. The majority of their product is reasonably priced. You can grab a litre of milk for $1.25. Other positives about Marion Foodland IGA include the fact they have lots of staff in the store at any given time which means not too much waiting at checkouts. You know that annoying wait at late night supermarkets where only one person is on the checkout and there are ten people line up - not so here. Parking is always easy here and they have a good selection of deli products. Their bakery section is quite small but adequate and the fruit and veg section is pretty good too. If you have a late night emergency and live in the Marion area, I recommend this supermarket.

IGA has a very community-oriented marketing slant, but I still prefer to shop at smaller, more specialised outlets like butchers and small greengrocers. That said, this place is very convenient if you're in the area, the prices of most of the stuff is pretty competitive and the staff seem a bit friendlier than other supermarkets.

Great thing is the spice bags are so big that it'll take a while to run out and far cheaper then what you'll pay for a quarter of the amount in a supermarket. If you want to create an authentic Indian meal, or pick up a hard to find treatment, this is the place to bhangra your butt in to. New India Market has an excellent range of products which are imported regularly and kept up to date. If you are longing for a particular ingredient that you just can't find elsewhere, it'll be here. The staff are friendly and helpful and can direct you to what you're after. The one drawback is that certain items the staff only know the sub-continental word for the item. I spent forever trying to explain frankincense before giving up, then again if I'd asked for something more common they'd probably know what I was on about, and when I asked for a certain kind of coconut milk they instantly directed me. This store capably accommodates a few other groups outside of Indian food enthusiasts--Pakistanis, Fijian Indians, Sri Lankan and Pacific Islanders as well as coeliacs. Being half-Samoan, my parents often head to New India Market for their Islander wares as palusami, taro, yams, cassava and the savoury banana chips. There are also a lot of beauty items direct from India which aren't easy to come by like real coconut oil (for body and hair) and neem (a natural Clearasil). As Indian food here is mainly based on non-gluten products, coeliacs have hit the jackpot with the New India Market and can stock up on many snacks and food items. Not only can you purchase ingredients but you can purchase the certain items and utensils for preparing those ingredients. Of all the many products, my favourite product from here are the cans of pink Tuna "Wahoo" which tastes phenomenal and quite different from Australian canned Tuna. Yum!
