The facade of this grocery store is very inviting, then you go in and find everything wrong there. To begin with no shopping cart or basket for your goods. They charge .25 cents to loan you a shopping cart! This was really first for me. Nothing was priced where you could see, it was like a puzzle to figure out what price went with what item. The goods they had for sale was also very odd! Selling pet beds? Then came time to check out, the line was so long and there was only one register open. I asked the person by register if he could ask for back up? He made it sound as if I had just spoken to him in another language. Rolled his eyes at me and did nothing. After waiting 10 long minutes in line, and seeing that the line had a super slow move, I decided to walk away from what I was about to purchase. read more

Adi's stuff is cheaper than Stop and Shop for sure. You have to pay a big quarter to get a shopping cart which seems to bother a lot of people who are writing reviews for some reason. I remember BJ's used to do that and they finally quit. Shopping carts cost up to $200 each so when one gets lost it impacts the bottom line in retail establishments. the produce section sometimes has questionable produce so pick through it to find the good stuff! read more

Them knock off brands you've never heard of or that container of hummus you don't know how many times it's been frozen and thawed to finally make it onto that shelf. Hey, it could be rebranded Tyson chicken or Quacker's rice puffs, who knows. But if you're on a tight budget than this place is the store to hit if you don't have a wholesale club membership either. No plastic bags for free (pay 10 cents each) and you need to use a quarter (or your key) to get a grocery cart cuz there sure ain't no baskets either, Aldi is the epitome of a cost efficient grocery store. Besides snacks and cereals you can find fresh fruit and produce, a plethora of frozen foods, and surprisingly kitchen, home, and garden goods. There's plenty of parking available and it is located in one of those outside strip mall like area, so there's nothing glamorous like whole foods. read more

So I feel kind of bad writing this but Aldi just makes me feel really sad. It's just this quiet, cavernous, sad hall of off-brand food items and (on the day I visited) old people. I'm totally into the concept of getting more for your dollar- but this was not at all what I expected. I guess I thought it would be like some Swedish mecca of grocery items, neatly packaged and displayed at reasonable prices with happy svelte employees tending to my every shopping need. In reality, this was kind of like dollar store meets the last 15 minutes of Haymarket. Some of the goods are cheaper- some aren't. The dried foods were hit or miss- mostly memorable for the laughable knock off packaging designs (Crispie Rice Treats...I call shenanigans). The meat section was small and the produce was really spotty on our visit. Plus our fellow patrons seemed just as unhappy to be wandering these aisles as we were- making for an uncomfortable 25 minutes of shopping. And while I understand the idea behind urging shoppers to bring their own bags- it just felt kind of cheap when combined with the fact that you need to pay a quarter to use Aldi's shopping carts. The saving grace was our incredibly friendly cashier- but by that time it was too little too late for me. read more

First off, I have to readily agree w/Sojouner's review in relation to reading the labels if you care about preservatives and good ingredients; you should do your homework and look at the labels. Two examples I can think of - those little canned roast beef's or those canned chicken dumplings they sell near the front of the checkout counter. I figured I'd give each of them a try for lunches at the office, but they were either bland, or worse, gave me the poops, and were loaded with sodium. For the most part, I don't mind knock-offs, but there are some examples as to where one must get top shelf - orange juice for example...nothing beats Tropicana. And I'm sure everyone has their own personal example. I found their honey nut cereal (their equivalent of Honey Bunches of Oats) horrible and stale tasting. However, their Lean/Kashi type cereal is very nice, with a tasty grape-nutty flavor. Another top pick - their Cattlemen's Ranch bacon wrapped filets for $1.89 each or $3.89 for a twin pack (currently). You just can't go wrong w/these tasty little 5 oz. morsels of meat - probably the best thing they have there. Look for them - you won't regret it - just 5-6 minutes or so for a nice medium steak on the George Foreman grill with some veggies, and you'll be surprised you spent so little on them. And if you're looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, try their Choceur Hazelnut Chocolate Bar. Very good - you may have eaten the whole candy bar before you've realized it. Other pluses: I like the fact you have to put a quarter in to use their shopping cart and return it to the carriage rack at the front of the store to get your quarter back - it gives one an incentive to not be a lazy, inconsiderate ass and leave the cart in the lot to either take up a parking space or let it bang into a car that is not one's own...a practice that irritates the SHITE out of me...whatever happened to doing the right thing? Anyways, it helps Aldi keep their cost down - it's all about working together people...that's to be applauded. I wish all grocery store chains did this. Aldi doesn't do credit cards, but will do debit. Another cost saving measure they employ to keep costs down for the consumer. Have to applaud them for that. Go here if you're in the mood for a fun and relaxing shopping experience (I did enjoy looking at the animated characters that were on their cereal box knock-offs to substitue for name brand animated characters...it's those little things, you know?). I pretty much buy the same stuff every time. Not only is it cheap but I can get a lot of basic staples for prices that are lower than any where else. I don't use the carts because I don't buy I huge amount. Instead I bring my own bag and carry my items in that. If you want to use a cart, you have to put a quarter in the slot and then you get it back when your done using the cart. Some of the household items are (under $2.00) super cheap, like paper products, baby wipes, paper cups. If you need it basic stuff, the prices are unbeatable for what you get. Definitely a fan so far. It is a great place to buy staples at a reasonable price. I've been buying things like crackers, chips and salsa (Their fresh salsa in refrigerator case is fantastic), granola, soy milk, etc. Like Trader Joe's, they have some exciting things in the freezer case. Most notable is the 8 dollar pack of 4 frozen *wild* salmon filets. Not bad at all. I'be also been buying lots of nuts there...almonds, mixed, glazed pecans, all at very very good prices. Good groceries for an exceptional price. This is THE place to go for discount groceries. They have a large selection and for a discount store I am truly impressed with the variety of products. You don't see stale items on the shelves. The store is clean and the cashiers are nice. If you want a shopping cart, you have to deposit a quarter into the box on the handle of the cart. You get the quarter back when you return the cart. Also, bring your reusable shopping bags! They charge a few cents for paper/plastic bags. Actually, the plastic bags are kind of worth buying if you're the kind of person who reuses them. They're a tier above other grocery store plastic bags. I'm an Aldi fanatic. You'll need a quarter to get a cart (you get it back when the cart is returned), you should bring your own bags (you can buy varying quality bags from 5 cents ~ $1), you will have to bag your own groceries. Prices are almost suspiciously low. The staff there will absolutely ignore you like it is in their job description. All of the "no name" Aldi-made products are DELICIOUS. Most are made with natural flavors, no high fructose corn syrup, "real" ingredients. Unfortunately they don't have everything I need, but it is my favorite place to buy snacks, cereal, nuts, sauces & salad dressing- most of my shelf stable foods. I went to the Medford store and couldn't find them so I asked for help from someone stocking the shelves and was told if you don't see them we must not have them. I asked if they could help me look or check out back and they said no. ALDI is ok. I'd only go there again if I were in the need for cheap fruits and veggies. Other than that, I would probably not step into ALDI's again. They are a simple grocery chain minimizing on costs that may not be needed so they can price their products competitively. -Bring a quarter. You need one to unlock the mechanism for the grocery cart. -Bring cash or your atm card. They take food stamps, cash, and ATM cards. No credit cards! -Bring bags. They do not provide bags for you. You can buy one of their cloth bags for $1.99. Place is new so it is clean. It is a bit small though. Selection is limited. I was in there on a Sunday around 2PM. They only had one cashier. I like this supermarket a lot. Their prices are low and the product quality is high. They do not have everything, it is somewhat smaller than the big supermarkets having less shelve space, but I like that as well as it is easier to navigate. So instead of having a choice of 5 different brands of toilet paper in 4 different package sizes each, you only have 2 type choices with 2 package sizes. Works for me. I understand from talking to somebody who knows them better that they have their own labs and constantly do quality control on the goods that they sell so that for example when there was the Spanish olive oil crisis their Spanish olive oil didn't seem top be affected (the producers are probably more careful if they know their products are constantly tested). I understand that is because even though their stores are small, they are actual giants, they have thousands over thousands of stores and I heard there are whole countries covered with them so that wherever you live in those countries there will be one of these in walking distance from you. Sounds all good to me - the store works for me even though I have to drive 2 miles. Staff is friendly as well and usually register service is very quick. And interesting system with their carts - you have to put a quarter in to release one but you get it back when you return it. This was the first time I saw that but now this same system is used by other supermarkets as well. read more

The renovated store is deceivingly nice with its fake wooden floors and more ready-to-go meals, as well as more frozen food. This doesn't make up for the confusing layout, the lack of staff, and above all, the disgusting produce. Oranges seem a steal at $2 a bag, until you cut them open and find the rotten core. Salads are slimy, berries are moldy. I'd never buy milk or dairy here, I wouldn't want to get sick. I'll stick to Wegmans and market basket - similar prices but much, much better selection and quality. read more

I have been shopping at Aldi for over 20 years, it is my "go to" grocery store for everything. Easy and quick to shop because there is low decision making, as they usually only have their brands available which are fine. The selection of cheeses are awesome and they have great options for Friday night pizza @ 5.99 each. For those comparing it to Traders Joe's, they seem alike because they are. They originally started in Europe as ALDI and split when they came to the U.S. because of some type of family argument. So yes, you will see some similar items and probably cheaper than Trader Joe's. And for those who get all "huffy" when waiting in line, slow down and remember they have a great business model of having cashier/stockers and pay them nice wages and are able to keep cost down to the consumer while keeping things moving. If you're an Aldi regular you know the routine: quarter for a cart, bring your own bags, no name brands, warehouse shelving, but CHEAP prices. This location is the closest to me so it's my go to when I need to stock up in staples. They had staff out stocking the shelves while I was there but I was disappointed they didn't have their 'gourmet' refrigerated section stocked (their house brand specialty select is amazing when you need snacks for Home entertaining). I know they often get dinged for customer service but a manager came out to open a 2nd check out when the line got long and was very polite and apologetic for the long wait. I come here for basics. Milk, eggs veggies etc. Spending $20-$30. Not a lot of food. I bring my own bag. I don't use a carriage. I bag my things very fast so I don't hold up the line. But when the cashier scans my things and puts them in the bottom of the communal carriage before the previous customer is out of my way it's very frustrating. Can I just say that I adore this place? I accidentally found it last year, when I got lost trying to find another store. I almost passed out on the spot. I am a HUGE fan of Aldi; I have been going to the Aldi in CT when we visit my in-laws. The closest Aldi to me is in Salem, NH. :( Since my beloved Johnnie Foodmaster closed down, I have no choice but to head to Aldi (Market Basket parking lot in Burlington is a disaster!!!!). The parking here is not an issue whatsoever. A lot of the prices here are cheaper than MB and although you may not find everything you're looking for, you can find most of the things on your list. Their meat section is small, but has enough of a variety, and their dairy section has a lot of what most other stores have (the Aldi Greek yogurt is only .89 and I can't tell the difference compared to a brand name). Remember to bring reusable bags and .25 for a carriage (you get the .25 back when you return the cart). Also, bring cash or a debit card. They do not accept credit (that's why the prices are cheap!). I would give this place a shot. It's totally worth it! read more

I have found their store brands to be consistently excellent and the national brands to be cheeper than at the competitors. Price: Dirt. Cheep. Even bought a phalanopsis orchid for $4. Anyone who has been anywhere already knows the ALDI drill, a deposit of a quarter for a shopping cart, cash/ebt only for payment, and pay for bags or bring your own. Also no name brands, so if you're slavishly devoted to being manipulated by advertising this probably isn't the best place to go. We basically picked up about $200 worth of groceries for just $86 yesterday, so I was pretty pleased. The only real complaint which I'm surprised no one else has mentioned is how utterly dreadful the Medford location is. The Fellsway is a complete parking lot, jammed with traffic for hours on end and there is no public transportation option to get to this ALDI. No sidewalks. No crosswalks. We actually had to use our car for the first time in two weeks just to get our groceries, and it took about 90 minutes to drive the 4.7 miles into suburban Medford hell. read more

This is a no frills sort of place, along the same lines as Save-A-Lot which just shut down in Revere. I will be back to rate their food, but the prices are most often good, just don't take that on blind faith, some things are not that much less expensive than what you would find at a regular grocery. They do not cater to special diets in any way that I could see, but again, this is a very basic place. They sell some interesting things that I am excited to try though. They do run out of things. This week it was the boneless chicken breasts and chicken legs. They have a small produce section that is okay for the most part and do carry bags of salad and spinach and such in a cool unit. You MUST have a quarter if you want a grocery cart. Don't worry, you get it back when you return the cart. I have always thought that this was an excellent idea as many of the people who shop tend to be jerks and leave their carts behind your car or worse, just out in the middle of the parking areas. It is no big deal. Also, they will sell you bags, but it is better just to bring your own. They have a place set aside for you to bag your own groceries once you are through the line. This is actually faster and my things are bagged properly, so it is all good. I did not purchase any fresh meats since they didn't have what I want, so I won't be able to report on that, but there were some convenience foods that I will update on as soon as we eat it and I remember to update. We got five full cloth bags of food. I mean full. We spent 60 dollars. Not bad at all. I won't need non perishables for quite a while. The cashier was sweet, though not terribly friendly. Very business like, and fast. The store was clean, and I didn't feel the need to wash myself upon leaving, which is always a plus at these discount places. IMPORTANT! Cash or debit ONLY, no credit cards accepted. All of these little "inconveniences" help to keep the costs low, so I am good with that. read more

Liking the display shelves on wheels! * Cheap prices, though this ranges from mind-blowingly good deal (probably a loss leader) or slightly more expensive than someplace like Costco. Not that I like having to have a membership at Costco, but our family does. Cons: * I don't carry coins when I'm biking to the grocery store, or pretty much ever, so I couldn't get a shopping cart. I never get one anyway, since I have to put everything I buy in my backpack, so a basket is the right size and carts are annoying to push around. * They have no shopping baskets, so I just had to sort of awkwardly carry everything I wanted to buy around in my arms, and couldn't buy as much as I wanted to because I simply couldn't carry it without dropping it. * Some of their produce is not refrigerated, so I didn't feel comfortable buying it (like tomatoes). Some of their cucumbers were sitting out clearly rotten. * Small selection. * Relatively short hours. I would gladly pay higher prices Shaw's in Porter because it is 24-hour. Maybe people with cars generally carry quarters for parking meters, and I suppose it's a good idea so they don't have to pay someone to clear carts from the parking lot, but given the lack of hand baskets and dubious produce, if I want to save a few bucks it seems easier to walk to McKinnon's which is a lot closer and has similarly bad hours. Aldi's is cheap because the Medford store is seriously understaffed and poorly supplied. Their produce section always looked pawed through, messy and bare. What's left is rotten. They have lousy customer service. You cannot contact the store directly (company policy) and probably because they don't have enough staff to even carry a cell phone. Aldi's should concentrate on grocery and produce keeping their stores neat, clean and sufficiently supplied. Get rid of all the other junk; toys, clothing, furniture etc. Why doesn't Aldi just open up a department store - they don't do justice to anything. read more

Sometimes understaffed but this store is neat and clean. Great deal on chucked this week 1.79/lb for boneless skinless. Aldi is so much cheaper for stop and shop and the produce is still half decent. Aldi is good for what it advertises to be. There are definitely items on my grocery list that are cheaper at Aldi than other stores, but are just as good in quality. A lot of their store brand items are on point. I follow a gluten free diet but will pay the extra money for those items at other stores because Aldi doesn't make the grade with their gluten free items. I also stay away from their produce (usually past ripe, not in coolers) with the exception of their apples, milk, and meat. They usually have the lowest eggs prices around. Yes, you have to hand over a quarter to use a cart but you get it back. Make sure you bring bags otherwise you'll use their empty product boxes or pay $0.10 for one of their plastic bags. Employees have always been kind and helpful. They also sell seasonal and household items. I've found the best time to go is an hour to two before they close. read more

My 12 year old son calls this market "Un-official" because he's not familiar with the brands. We laugh about it constantly. When I first wandered into this market and asked the workers questions, one of them said that if the label looks like something your familar with, it will be like that product. I'm EXTREMELY picky about what I eat. He mentioned that they will give your money back if not 100% satisfied, no questions asked. So, I brought a couple of things. I got Burman's mayonaise (which is supposed to be like Helman's), Yogurt @ .39 cents each!!!, cookies, crackers, etc. I was SHOCKED!!! It was great!! I'm very sensitive to the taste of mayo and yogurt and I'm in love with both! I'm a bit of a health nut lately and make smoothies daily so, I get the strawberries which are the same size in the supermarkets for what? $3.49 at the least! they cost like $1.39 each bunch, bananas for $.44 cents a pound!! This store is awesome! I have saved about $50 per week on groceries since this place arrived. It's a little different, but in this case, different is good! As mentioned, it operates a little unlike what most people are used to. When you come, you can either shop by filling your own bags as a stand-in for a shopping basket, or you can get a shopping cart. They do not have hand baskets, but that's fine in my book. You don't have to PAY for a cart like some other people say. You put a quarter into the little black box thing on the handle of the cart, and it releases the lock. When you're all done, you lock the cart back up and you get your quarter back as it pops out of the box for you to grab. This is AWESOME in my opinion!! The parking lot is FREE of carts! There are no ALDI carts abandoned in the neighborhood! No carts blocking parking spaces or striking your car while you're shopping. People are lazy and usually just push a shopping cart and let it crash into whatever.. this makes people actually tidy up after themselves. I think it's GREAT. The prices are stellar! There are a few products here and there that are the same price as other stores, but 90% of what the average person would want to buy on a regular basis is way less. Some stuff I would buy at Stop & Shop is honestly HALF the price here. No, they are not name brands. It's sort of like going to Stop & Shop or Market Basket and buying the store generic brands. If you're a brand snob, go spend twice the price somewhere else. I can get healthy foods and snacks here and save a ton. And everything I've tried so far is delicious and just as good as name brands. The cereal is great and tastes just like the name brands...for about a buck fifty a box, the same size as the $4 boxes at S&S. Have I mentioned I love this store? As for the bagging, they want you to bring your own bag. It's environmentally conscious, and encourages you to reuse and recycle. How can anyone turn their nose up at that? They DO have backup bags though. They said they're 11 cents for a really big plastic bag or 6 cents for a typical size paper bag. They keep the line moving really quickly at the register with efficiency the European way. You empty your cart onto the belt just like any other store. But the cashier rings it up and outs the stuff into another cart. You pay, give them the empty cart, and then bag the groceries yourself at the bagging counter just across from the registers. Bag yourself?! Really!? Yes! It takes two minutes, and remember how much money you just saved. Their whole business plan is designed to save money...for themselves and for the customers. If they had to pay someone to bag the groceries, you would be paying that salary with the price of the bill. It makes sense to me. I have seen people complain about it, but I think they're being lazy. All in all, it's a unique experience, but it's my new favorite store. I tell everyone about it. Honestly...everything else is so expensive. Why not save yourself some money on groceries? Oh, and I forgot to mention: I hear people all the time complain about how to pay. They take debit and atm cards, and also EBT/food stamps. Cash of course too. They just don't take credit cards and checks. So basically, you have to have the money to spend it. I don't blame them.
