Aldi is pretty good. They have less of a selection, but great bargains. Here's where I go for coffee and yogurts. Can some complete their food shopping here? Yes. This is one Aldi's that takes their store seriously. I used to dread going to this location. It was before the renovation and slow a$$ check out. Now, a simple compliment on how fast the checkout was and that I wished everyone everywhere checked out as fast as he did, made a difference. Turns out that he was the manager and since then, it's almost like they have a timed training session to become a cashier because all of the ones I go to slam those items through the scanner like no body's business and they even properly reload the box you brought with you. They also will catch opened merchandise and let you run to get a new one after checking out. I hope that someone brings back the cashier Olympics someday, because I would enjoy attending them or watching them on TV just like the bartender contests. The store is kept nicely stocked and organized at all times. They have a nice variety of items and also bring in their brand of Specially Select items that are unique like the Mushroom Truffle ravioli or Pumpkin Butternut squash pasta sauce. After taking a couple of chances bringing these types of selections home to try without a risk of large expense, I was very pleased and feel that these types of items bring a nice gourmet touch to an otherwise bland dinner menu at home. I'm looking forward to looking for those particular items from now on. When it comes to the other international goods, they just don't taste as good to me for some reason. Like they are foods discovered in an century old European bomb shelter. I've tried the Belgium chocolate and banana chips or breads and just can't get over some reminder of moth balls they could have been stored in. I don't know, I can't force myself to continue to try to give those things another chance. The cheeses, produce, meats and frozen items are good. Canned goods are hit and miss. They have the housewares and kitchy things down the middle aisle that are neat and well priced. During the holidays, you can find nice gifts to have for unexpected occasions like fancy chocolates or hot cocoa. Keep in mind that the flavor does not really remind me of Belgium chocolate for some reason. Maybe it's just me that hasn't had what a true one is! Items I routinely buy were all atleast a dollar or more cheaper ! Delicious prosciutto 2.99 for the same pack I spend $7 on at the giant grocery ? Beautiful Produce ? A giant plastic container of mixed nuts 12.99 instead of $18 at giant ? Seriously ?! Plus they gave me 3 reusable shopping bags and were most cordial in the store . The German Shopping Experience! If you think this is going to be like a normal trip to Teeter or Giant---think again! You will be surprised on many levels, namely the super low prices, absences of name brands, paying to use a shopping cart, and having to provide your own bags. Of course, if you ever shopped at an Aldi in Germany, you are used to this. This is the perfect store for the super-bargain hunter. In this economy, you should give Aldi a try. Today I stocked up and bought a smaller cart load of groceries (including 2 gallons of milk, canned goods, produce, some meat, dry goods) for $50.00. I was shocked! If you are expecting this to be Wegman's or even Shopper's think again. You can't hold that against Aldi. For the most part, you can find pretty good quality food staples. Oh, word to the wise, the Aldi brand "Lofthouse" sugar cookies (AKA: frosted crack) are almost identical to their overpriced cousins. You may want to go just for those... I don't really agree with Duane S. This location is brand new and opened in mid December '08 so everything is very clean and new, not that other locations are old and dirty. Aldi and Giant were my two main grocery stores while on a tight budget while in college. While incredibly inexpensive, I always found their brands to be just as good if not better than some of the name brands offered at bigger grocery stores. I never had a problem with the eggs I bought and the milk is REALLY cheap there. The meats are high quality, but the produce isn't always the best. Aldi (not this particular location) carries Wernesgrüner, which is one of my favorite beers. Be sure to try out some of their incredibly cheap chocolate which is delicious! You have to remember at Aldi you aren't paying for a label and the people who manufacture their food for them usually a big name brand like Kraft or General Mills etc. Some things to remember: - This also isn't a one stop place, they carry about 80% of the items that you would need from a grocery store. - The lines are longer because they under staff to save money, so be prepared to wait a bit in line. It always moves pretty quickly so don't worry. - Bring your own bags or you will have to buy theirs which are about 5 cents a piece - Bring 25 cents to get a shopping cart which you will get back when you return it. - They do not accept credit cards but they do accept debit cards. If you don't have either or don't want to use your debit card, bring cash. Everything Aldi does is to save you money, and they do it very well. I approve. read more

I don't go to Aldi as much as I should these days. I used to shop at Aldi all the time when my wife and I were saving to buy a home and on a tighter budget. But when the HT opened up, I shifted my shopping to there because if you shop for the sale items you can get comparable or better quality for the same or maybe even slightly less. But Aldi is a viable shopping option if you need something and don't want to wait for it to go on sale. And if you are on a budget, have to buy a set of specific items each week, and don't mind buying store brands over name brands, then Aldi is for you. Quick history lesson. Some reviews mention that Aldi is the parent company of Trader Joe's. That's somewhat true. Founded by the Brecht family in Germany, the two Brecht brothers split the business in 1960 over a dispute about selling cigarettes, and the two divisions are financially independent, while operating as the same brand. One brother runs Aldi Sud (South), which manages the Aldi stores in the south half of Germany, and retains the rights to use the Aldi name everywhere EXCEPT mainland western Europe. So the Aldi stores you see in the US are run by Aldi Sud. Aldi Nord (North), wanting to gain access to the US Market, bought Trader Joe's in 1979. Why the history lesson? Because comparisons between Aldi and Trader Joe's aren't really fair. They share some similarities - such as using primarily store brands - but Aldi doesn't try to be an organic, environmentally-friendly hippy dippy hipster store. Yet, many of their store brands are very good. The rule of thumb is that if it is a product that the Germans do well, it's good. And Aldi operates just like their German counterparts. You have to use a quarter as a deposit for your shopping cart, bags (if you want them) are extra, and you typically bag your items yourself after purchase. Credit cards are not accepted, but debit cards are. (And, of course, straight cash HOMEY) Every year I make a couple of meat/cheese/sweets holiday goody bags for family, and building them myself with product from Aldi is FAR cheaper than buying something out of the box, and with great quality. Lunch meats, sausages, cheeses, German pastries, all fantastic. Their dairy products are solid. Produce is a bit of a toss-up, but what I saw this week was an improvement over what they had a few years back. They have box/canned goods, frozen foods, cleaning supplies, etc. etc. Pretty much everything you need. My suggestion - try different things and see if you like them compared to your normal brand. No Frills This is a no frills low cost supermarket. But they have some good stuff. This place has non-budget imitation brands. Some of the stuff is like knock-off brands. Instead of Red Bull, they have Red Thunder. They also have a substitute brand fro Monster Energy Drink too. It's less than half the price, and it's just as good. I'm serious about that too. It's just as good. You can get just as much of a buzz off the knock-off brand Red Thunder as you can from Red Bull. When you wanted a McDonald's hamburger, and your mom took you home and cooked a hamburger, put it in between two slices of white Wonder Bread and put some ketchup on it. It wasn't anywhere near what you wanted. But not at this place. The cereals, the energy bars, etc. it's all just as good as name brands. I haven't tried to cola yet. Maybe I'll try that next week. Right when you walk in the door of most supermarkets is the fruits and vegetable section. For Aldi it's the junk food section: candy, chips, pop corn, nuts, etc. An entire isle of junk food. They also have eggs, milk, cheese, popsicles, frijoles, plantains, tomatoes, knock-off cereals, etc. They have a lot of different stuff for such a small store. One of the ways they save is with the shopping carts. Giant has a dude whose job is to retrieve the shopping carts. At Aldi you have to put in a quarter to get a shopping cart, and you get your quarter back when you return it. Even if someone is too lazy to return their shopping cart, there will sure enough come along someone who will return it to get that quarter. So the shopping carts are all well organized in place without having to hire someone to do it. The last time we went in there, only one employee was visible working one cash register. Long before this place opened we heard about it from a flight attendant who raved about the chocolate they sell in Germany. Precious agrees. Precious actually prefers Aldi's chocolate to Godiva. Do you have any idea how much money this is going to save me as time goes by? The chocolate alone makes it worth an extra trip to this place. Heads Up: The hours are not as convenient as other places. They open later and close earlier. Also, they only accept cash or debit card. They're not allowed to tell the customer, but the credit card companies screw the vendors. They charge 3% for every transaction. Some take up to 30 days to pay. And they manipulate the market to prevent other methods of payment (like paying with an iPhone). So by not taking credit cards it saves just a little bit more and at the same time giving the finger to the credit card companies. Anyway, unless you're a snob, you'll like this place. In some ways it's a little less convenient, but you can save a few bucks. It adds up. read more

I grew up with Aldi and even back then it always had that stigma that it was shopping for poor people. But I can assure you, this chain has come a long way. Aldi is the one-stop shop for the froogle shopper. They have everything that the competition carries, just not as much of it, meaning: one type of yellow mustard, one type of cheerios like cereal, one type of canned tuna, one type of gr beef etc. Aldi products are no more loaded with preservatives than any other brand. Don't let the simplicity of this concept fool you. Shop with an open mind, and you may just surprise yourself. Just remember... cash or debit only - no credit cards, bring a quarter for your shopping cart, bring bags or use the boxes they provide, and don't expect anybody to bag your stuff for you. Aldi is a German supermarket chain and the corporate parent of Trader Joe's (since the 1970s). If you think of Aldi as a budget Trader Joe's you will have a pretty good idea of what you are getting. The quality of products is similar to the mainstream supermarket version. I don't eat much packaged prepared foods period, so I don't buy many of them at Aldi, but I have tried the ramen noodles and the mac & cheese -- to me, both tasted the same as the brand name versions. I have also had good luck with frozen food, powdered drinks, coffee, pasta, and canned tomatoes. Milk, eggs, flour, sugar and similar staples -- can't beat the prices, BUT these things don't cost much anyway. Definitely buy them if you are in Aldi, but probably not worth the gas to make a special stop. Produce - cheap, but quality is a bit lower than Shoppers. I wouldn't make a special stop for the produce. HOWEVER anything that looks like they sell it in Germany - BUY IT. Chocolate, butter cookies, frozen strudel, pretzels, bratwurst,etc. are very, very nice. So oddly, I come to Aldi's if I am throwing a party. The seasonal housewares are also a lot of fun. I've heard not to expect much by way of service, but I really didn't find anything there I had to have. Yeah, their canned goods were extremely cheap. I dont tend to shop for processed foods, so I have no interest in their supply of snacks or frozen goods. When I found a cheese product and bananas to purchase, I waited in line for 9 minutes with a toddler. There was a single cashier and 4 people ahead of me. I finally got up there and was cheerful with the cashier. She wouldnt look up at me, and I had to ask her three times what she said while I was trying to pay. As it turns out, she was telling me they dont take charge cards. Since I didn't have my pin # memorized (new card) I couldn't purchase my 2 items. We love this place. Lots of organic food for reasonable prices. Orgsnic chips fir less than $1.50. Same brand of organic chips at Harris Teeter costs $7.99. I have been to other Aldi's and this one is by far the most organized and well stocked of the ones I have visited. My wife and I walked through to get a few things but typically avoid Aldi because we know we cannot get everything we need and I prefer to do one stop shopping. Aldi for us is a place to get a few specialty items that cannot be found elsewhere or a place to stock up on snack foods. It was a busy day while I shopped here. I go to the cashier so she could ring up my items. I swiped my debit card and I punched in my pin number on the keypad but I pressed the wrong number by mistake. As expected, the card declined so I swiped again. The cashier said "Your EBT card probably doesn't have any money." I hate being confrontational but I replied "It's a PNC debit card you fucking bitch!". I payed for my items and left. I tried Aldi since it was supposed to be cheaper than other supermarkets. It is, but at the cost of not being very healthy for you. Almost everything I saw there had high fructose corn syrup in it. I did a check of comparable things I buy at other supermarkets and verified that they didn't have HFCS. They didn't. The eggs had a weird texture to them when I fried them. NoVA has some of the highest priced groceries in the country! I've tried shopping at Hariris Teeter, Safeway, Food Lion, and Walmart. However, shopping at Aldi has literally halved my grocery bill. This store has a terrific selection, (including organic and gluten free) of food, plus a fun aisle, that reminds me of Tuesday Morning. It's filled with games, toys, kitchenware, rugs, etc, and changes weekly. The prices cannot be beat! They also recently started accepting credit cards, although I hope that doesn't drive up the prices. Bring a quarter for the cart - one of their cost cutting measures is not hiring personnel to manage the carts. They will not bag your groceries, so either bring your own bags/boxes, or purchase bags there. You will have to bag yourself after you pay. read more

Canned goods and non-perishables are unbeatable and almost everything is just as good as the store brand stuff. I would steer away from the produce, but everything else is game! She wouldn't give me my basket and claimed it was hers for the next costumer, who wasn't there. She saw I had my girls waiting to help load my bags I brought in, but claimed I had to bring it back to her. She did this rudely and took the basket from my hands. I walked away before she went crazy because I had small children helping. It's disconcerting to clearly see green mold on the packaged cheddar cheese in the cooler, as I did today. I have only been a couple times but won't go again. I can't trust any of the food, the sanitation, the respect for proper shelf life or proper refrigeration, etc. I did leave with my bag of sugar but wonder what I'll find in it when I get home -- bugs, dirt, who knows. The milk is very cheap, but after today I don't trust it not to be sour or worse. I certainly would buy any meat there due to an affection I have for my health. The other prices, such as for off-brand paper towels or off-brand spices don't seem noticeably better than, say, Food Lion (where I often shop and don't find mold on the cheese). I see no reason to go to Aldi; any possible savings aren't worth the concern about improperly stored food (and why didn't any of the workers notice or care?), meager selection, and only-average discount prices. read more

.I was the first person to shop at that store. Always found it clean, stocked well, easy to see and locate the products I purchase. Just recently renovated first time back. I am disappointed in that the store looks like a ghetto warehouse. Too many products in boxes, some one cannot see or reach. Floors dirty, need to be scrubbed. The set up is not so easy, now. Many shoppers were going back and forth to find items and caused congestion. Products to be shelved are left in aisle piled up, between that and shoppers going back and forth takes too much time. I grew up shopping at this store back home. I was delighted to see that they built two here in Manassas. That "delight" was short lived. Some items I see in here cost MORE than what you'll find at Walmart. Sure, this store started out as, "The Stock Up Store," back in the day. Now, they have become the "Payless Shoe Source" of groceries stores. Started out as groceries for low prices, simply because the items were generic. Now, they're selling quite a few name brand items for more than competitors. As for the service at this location...IT SUCKS! I was in there one morning where there was only one line opened. The only people in that line were me, two women (who were together) in front of me, and one lady behind me. No one was at the register to check us out. I looked back when I heard a woman yell, "I'll be there in a minute." This woman was sweeping the floor in one of the aisles! Really lady? Shouldn't you do that BEFORE, AFTER, and when the store is NOT BUSY??? Why hold us up? Other days, (especially during the hours of 4pm and beyond when people are getting off work) they have one, maybe two lines open, where people are backed up waaaaaay down the aisles. They almost, always NEVER have more than two lines opened, despite large crowds. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen ALL lines opened before. read more

WE LOVE ALDI! For anyone on a budget, this is the place to shop. While it is true there is nothing fancy about it, it is the cheapest place to shop I have ever found. I am the mother of five boys, and you can imagine how much food we need. You won't find a million choices or brands, but we don't miss it. I also agree that they have too many overprocessed foods, but they also have incredible yogurt, eggs, cheese, fresh meats, and great produce. (you just need to shop early!) I buy their frozen boneless chicken breasts, turkey medalions, gorgonzola cheese, feta cheese, etc and feed my family very healthy meals. Fruits and veggies are incredibly priced (strawberries $1.25 lb!) and although they don't stock a huge selection, I always find the basics. I do 95% of my shopping there. read more

I would give this store a zero but you can't. I am a 67 year old male who has been shopping for over half a century and this was simply the worst shopping experience of my life. I have not lost my temper in 20 or 30 years but I had to leave the store before I did something I would be sorry for. My story? I went into Aldi on Liberia on Friday, Aug 4th a little before one PM. I have been there many times so know how it works. You have to bring your own bags, pack for yourself, put a deposit on the cart, and often endure long lines. That's part of the experience if you want to 1/3 off savings from other stores and I have no problem with that. Since I know how long the lines can be I always look at the registers when I go in. This time there was only one register, number two, open and there were three to four people in line so I figured I would have a long checkout. I finished my shopping--about 50 items--and went to the front. To my surprise there was no one there--no customers and no cashier. I was quickly joined by a middle aged man, a woman with two children, and a man who appeared to be in his seventies. The man behind me asked if I had seen a cashier and I answered no. I then saw the green sign on the belt on register two. It said, "please put your purchases on the belt and a cashier will be with you soon." I pointed out the sign to the others and said I guess that's what I will do and they all nodded. I had almost finished putting all my groceries on the belt when a cashier came from around the corner and went to register three. She then turned to me and said, "I'm sorry, sir, that register is closed. You'll have to get in line over here." I looked at her in amazement and said, "You're kidding. The sign says its open." She then said, "It's not working so you will have to get in line over here." She then turned to the man behind me and said, "will the next customer come up please." To my surprise the man, and the other customers as well, refused to go up. The first man said that I was first and should be taken next, and the man at the end of the line actually yelled at the girl that the young man (me) was next and I should be taken first. I actually picked up the green sign and brought it to her to read. She again said that register was not working. I told her the register had been working just a few minutes before when I came in and if was not working now why did she put the sign on it saying it was open. She had no explanation but then told me to come on over. I picked up all my groceries from the belt and put them in the cart and moved to the other line while the customers waited. I began to put them on the belt on register two when, in fairness, the cashier did help me finish. I was so angry I asked if I could speak to a manager. She called a manager on her walkie talkie and told him they had an upset customer who needed to talk to him. I had just finished paying for my purchases when a young man came up and immediately went to register four to start checking people out. When he said nothing about an upset customer I went over to him and asked if he knew I wanted to talk to him. He said, "Oh, yeah. What do you need?" I tried to calmly explain what had happened and when I had finished he actually laughed and asked what did I want him to do. I told him I would like them to take responsibility and apologize for how the treated me. At that point he actually said, "I don't know what you want us to do. Customers like to play games and move the signs from one register to the next so it's not our fault. At that point the man at the end of the line actually yelled at the manager and told him that was not right. I was so angry I went and bagged my groceries and left the store. I then called Aldi HQ and talked to two ladies in customer care who promised they would escalate the problem and have someone call me. It's been almost a week and not one has called. So, in summary, they told me to get in the back of the line when I was first, they said the register was broken when it was not (if it had just broke why would you put a sign on it saying it was open?). They ignored me and told the next person to load their groceries. The manager first ignored me, then laughed, and then lied by saying a customer had put the sign there. Finally, their HQ promised they would have someone call me but didn't. If anyone sees this who happened to be in the store when this happened I would appreciate your comments. Larry B. read more
