There is so much more than just tulip picking. My kids had such a blast enjoying the tulip-themed playground on site and the food trucks. There is also drink stands set up including non-alcoholic beverages along with beer and a cocktail tent. The service is efficient. They've clearly done this before and it's mostly staffed by friendly high school students. We were allowed to pick 5 tulips each, so for the four of us, we had 20 tulips. Upon leaving, staff will wrap up the tulips to ensure you picked the right amount. You can pick more but pay per stem. The young woman who helped wrap our flowers was very kind to our kids. She even helped them count all the flowers and papers, which was very sweet. It was a really fun day out. It sells out quickly, so advanced tickets are necessary.

Kids running everywhere, farm people doing what farm people do, and enough seasonal activities to keep families occupied until everyone forgets what time it is. It's the kind of place where parents sit down "for just a minute" and then suddenly it's an hour later and nobody is in a hurry to leave. If you're rolling in with a camper, it also works as a Harvest Hosts stop, which is a polite way of saying you can legally fall asleep there without anyone bothering you. Parking is easy in a grass-and-gravel area that's simple to level into, and once the day crowd clears out it gets quiet in that good country way. Verizon signal holds up well too, which is either a blessing or a curse depending on how hard you were trying to escape emails. What makes Messick's dangerous is that it's not trying to be anything other than what it is--but it ends up being more anyway. You go for a quick stop and leave feeling like you accidentally spent the afternoon at somebody's family reunion, except nobody made you help clean up afterward. Ted Russell, an Irishman transplanted to Reston some 10 years ago, watched the slow deterioration and vowed not let the Market slide into oblivion. And so was begun the restoration of this famous landmark. Being Irish he added a bit of the Gaelic. And being a garden guy, he put a bit more emphasis on the plants. And so what we've got now is Gaelic Gardens where the grass is just a tad greener, where the holiday celebrations have a Celtic twist, and where Irish events are showcased. For instance, every year the growing season opens on St. Patrick's day. The business emphasizes customer service, quality and unique products, an experienced team and an entertaining time for all who visit. Of course there is also the "rub of the shamrock"! You'll find Irish mugs, a few knick-knacks, and of course, some Mexican pottery -- but that's another story.

The whole interaction felt dismissive and disrespectful. It's really disappointing to see how the atmosphere has changed -- it no longer feels welcoming, especially toward Hispanic customers. I speak perfect English and was born here, but the attitude I experienced made me feel unwelcome. I won't be coming back.

The Gainesville Central Farm Market is located in the Virginia Gateway retail complex parking lot - next to the Virginia Gateway office building @ 7500 Iron Bar Lane. I visited for the first time the second Saturday of their run (May 9). I checked out all the vendors. There is a bit of everything: fresh produce (veggies, fruits, flowers, and plants), coffee, food vendors, meats, eggs, and a whole host of other stuff. I visited Bouvardia Coffee and ordered a small cold brew with Half n' Half. Pretty good cold brew! First time I've seen cold brew offered at a Farmers Market! I also visited Kingston Cafe and got some Jamaican food to go: a jerked pork and jerked chicken combo - which came with Plantains, dirty rice, and I believe they are curried vegetables. I followed them and enjoyed my beef, potatoe and rhubarb pie. Let's talk about parking! Deduct one star because parking is impossible if you don't get there early. There are 2 entrances and it's a war zone. Advice: have someone drop you off while you wait in line.
