Being a Midwestern transplant, I was psyched to finally get an Aldi around here. This place slashes your grocery budget by at least 25%, but possibly up to 50% depending on what you buy. There are a lot of Aldi-brand items that are worth a try here, especially the dry goods. There are a few things people need to keep in mind, because Aldi is not like other groceries. They keep their costs very low by reducing their footprint and by cutting the number of employees. 1) Yes, you must bring a quarter to unlock the grocery cart. This is how they avoid paying someone to collect cart and keep costs low. You get your quarter back if you bring it back to the front of the store and lock it back in. Not a difficult concept. Everyone in the Midwest just keeps an "Aldi quarter" in the car or purse or hopes someone else was still somehow too lazy to return their cart. 2) Yes, you must bag your own stuff. This is how they save on paying a bagger. You can buy 10c paper bags or, for a few dollars, buy one of the oversized cloth-type that are resuable. Or, you can do what Hoosiers do and collect the boxes from the store as you shop. As you're checking out, the cashier will place everything back into your cart. After you pay, you bring your stuff to a shelf on the back wall to bag/box your stuff. Or you can just cart it all loose back to your car if you prefer to keep your bags there. 3) There is no butcher or bakery. This is how they save money. The fresh meat is very well-priced, though. The price I got on salmon today was phenomenal. I didn't find it this time, but we used to get bacon-wrapped filets for such a good price. There is also quite an array of artisinal cheeses. 4) This is a SMALL grocery. You are not going to have 10,000 flavors of things. You're not going to have oddball stuff or a lot of name-brand items. You get your staples, keep it simple, and save a bucket-load of money on groceries. Bonus: You don't have to walk a quarter-mile to the other side if you forget something like you do at Ralph's or Vons. read more

Aldi is like the Ikea of grocery stores. You know it's not Crate and Barrel, but you didn't expect it to be. Did you? That's the only reason that can explain the 3-star reviews. If you don't know, Aldi is a budget grocery chain. They make in-house brands so you don't pay a premium on products like cereal, milk, cheese, chocolate, bread, beer and wine, etc. They also carry an abundance of fresh meat (by fresh I mean vacuum sealed) and produce. 10 pound bag of potatoes for $1? You'll find it here. And the potatoes won't be all gross and weird like they can get at 99 Ranch or other ethnic grocers aka it doesn't have flies yet so I guess we'll sell it. Definitely check Aldi out. You may find some excellent deals. It won't be the only grocery store you'll shop at as the selection is limited, but it can definitely supplement. Bring a quarter so you get a cart. When you return the cart, you get your quarter back. If you're mad about a quarter, maybe you got bigger problems than complaining about the mustard selection at a budget grocery chain. read more

Reminded me very much of the Aldi stores in Germany. You pay 25cents to "rent" a shopping cart. The cashiers are seated and work out of a german style cash drawer. All the groceries are in their original boxes. I would say 99% of the items are off brand. Prices seemed remarkably lower. The test will be how their food tastes. We discovered ALDI about 6 months ago and have been doing most of our shopping here ever since! We now save around $200 a month on groceries since switching to ALDI. There's mostly unfamiliar house brands, but they are just as good of quality, if not, even better than regular brand names you see at other grocery stores. They have a fantastic alcohol selection for deals that start as little as a 2 buck chuck! They have a great knock of Baileys and they also have brand names like Chandon and Lamarca got reduced prices. The staff at this location are very friendly and helpful, if you forget a quarter for the shopping cart slot just go ask a cashier and they can provide you with one. read more

I have never written a negative review but my visit to this store was the worst interaction I ever had with a store employee. There are many reviews here that say the same thing so I guess I am not the only one. It was my first visit and I was just there to grab two things. My first impression: small but very organized and a little bit of a strange smell that I couldn't place. (Discount grocery store smell?) After I grabbed my items, I went towards the check out line. There was nobody at any of the registers but there was store employee (who I later found out was named Kelton) speaking with a customer off to the side. She asked a question about plants and he was very short and condescending in his answer, which was basically, "They're over there. You can go look at them yourself." I could see she was a little taken aback but thanked him and left. Then, he walked to his station and gestured to me to come forward. I guess I didn't react fast enough for him because when I put my things on the belt, he said, "When you come up here you need put your things on the belt. That's how it works. Crazy right?" Wtf??? I was pretty shocked. I hadn't even said one word to him and he was giving me so much attitude. Then, he asked me something but I didn't hear him so I said, " I'm sorry?" and he responds with, "you're really out of it, aren't you?" WTF again???? This guy was just angry at me or the world or all the above. I was shocked, again, so I just stayed quiet so I get could get out of there and never come back. He literally threw my things into a cart by the check out in a passive aggressive (maybe not so passive, actually) way. Literally right after I touched the receipt he was handing me, he turned around and started talking with another co-worker. No acknowledgement, no thank you, no goodbye, nothing. I left the store feeling confused, embarrassed and honestly, angry. I have never been treated like that by a store employee. I work in customer service/recruiting and if I witnessed any of my employees acting that way, there would be very serious consequences, if they even still had their job. My experience at this store was so poor that I will never come back and will urge everyone I know to do the same. So to Kelton: please quit your job as a cashier as you are not suited to deal with other people in any capacity. And to Aldi management: please be more careful in your hiring process as employing someone like this has a very negative impact on your image and reputation. read more

I tried it twice and was not at all impressed! Very disappointed in the quality of items especially produce Bad wayfinding-could not figure out where anything was. On the day they opened I went in looking of one of the items they advertised (a set of glass bowls). I was told that they sold out within a few hours. Finally! There is an Aldi in South OC. As a Chicago native, Aldi is a staple "stock-up" store for essential food items. The new location is modern, fresh and easy on the budget. This location is a welcome addition to the neighborhood since Fresh & Easy left about 2 years ago. It replaces the old Vons store. You do have to bag your own items, but that is actually not inconvenient at all in comparison to the savings you get. read more

I'm going to give it one star only because I feel the " ready made salads " should be refrigerated (behind a closed door) and are not. They come with the dressing, etc; I bought 3 of them. Something didn't taste right. I think it was the dressing may have been too warm and spoiled. I got very ill within an hour and was sick all night until morning. I have tried calling the store to warn them, but no one answers. They will not accept returns, so I am out money. I hope they remedy this situation. read more

I was so excited to hear they were opening an ALDI close to me. Finally I visited the store last week before the Holiday and here's my honest impression. The positives: the store is very clean and well organized. Parking is plentiful. The produce section is the best I think; very fresh fruits and vegetables at very low prices. You will love the selection of wines and beer--again low prices and good quality wines. I found the most delicious hummus in the deli area. Fairly decent selection of fresh bread, cookies and pies. Lastly, the meat and frozen foods are affordable and just as good as name brand items. Remember you have to bring a quarter for use of the shopping cart (you will get your .25 cents back when you return the cart to the store.) Don't forget to BRING YOUR OWN BAGS! Now the NOT SO positive things about this store. There is a very small selection of soft drinks and water. The cereal options are also very limited. Be prepared to work a little for these low prices; you have to bag your own groceries after you purchase them but there is a station before the exit that makes it easier. Now the BIG negative: the cashiers are JERKS!! They will scold you if you don't put the items on the conveyor belt "properly." Make sure you "lay down" any bottles of wine when you place it on the belt or you will be made an example of! I found that a little off-putting and put a damper on an otherwise stellar experience. Really the only reason they don't get 5 stars is that their customer service is lacking. read more

This is a discount grocery store. If you like shopping for the ambiance rather than the lower prices, this probably isn't the place for you. The draw is that they have good quality products at prices about half that of other stores. Obviously I haven't tried everything, but everything I have tried I've found to be very good. They don't bag the items. The cashier dropped the fish on the floor and didn't pick it up, and didn't apologies for it either. I found this disrespectful. They don't greet you unlike other shops at the cash register, not a very friendly place to shop. They also charge for using their shopping cart unless you are willing to bring the cart back to get your money back. read more

Greeted at the door by the cart "concierge" who explained the 25 cent cart deposit with a salty attitude, then was rung up by the rudest cashier in recent memory. Instead of a explaining the bag your own system (I usually do anyway)as if I was a new shopper, she mentioned it after the fact and as I went back to grab my bags she had rolled my cart over against the wall. No hello,no thank you, nothing. The prices are decent but I'd rather shop at a store with a nicer staff. Won't be back. read more

This review is based on today's visit. I love shopping here. It's not crowded and the prices are great since I have to also shop for my mom since she's older, not allowed to drive, and it's stuff she likes. Today, they didn't have the bison advertised...not that they ran out, but it seemed like they just pulled the deal based on the sign posted. But the worst part was the line. I am fully aware that the checkers are remotely quick. They sit, they just put everything back in the cart and had you your receipt. But the line got long today the ONE checker said "someone was coming right out" and I was guided to the new line. I unloaded and stood there waiting. And waiting. And waiting. Another guy that got behind the 3 people already behind me was voicing his issue with this delay and all the other checker said was....she'll be right out. Nope. And when she did emerge, she left a pallet of food in the middle of the store. When asked how I was doing, I said I should have stayed in the other line (many others behind me were already out of the store) and her response was like a freaking robot....."that's disappointing". Canned response. Fix your service at the front Aldi. And while I know the drill with the carts and how they load, the cashiers are rude to those that don't know the way they load and use the cart that's already there. read more

Well, not the store for me. To have to pay a 25 cent deposit to use a grocery cart is not a concept I am use to, nor do I want to get use to it. On top of that, your bring your own bags, which I am getting use to...BUT You have to BAG YOUR OWN STUFF WITH YOUR OWN BAGS. So it works like this: Make sure you have your shopping bags AND a quarter to use a grocery cart. Then go into store. Shop and put items in your cart. Then go to check out. Unload your cart. Then cashier rings up your stuff and then puts your stuff into another cart. Then you walk over to a shelf area, and take your stuff out of the cart and PUT INTO THE Shopping Bags you brought with you. Then you put you bags back into the cart. Now Push your cart to your car, unload bags, and walk back to the front of store and put cart in rack to get your Quarter back. I did not see savings that account for this pretty much self serve approach. And for me, the food selection is not of my taste or brands. Limited selection and brands I am not aware of. Maybe good for some people, but I am not one of them. read more

Aldi is typical German with its hyper clean and efficient model. I actually go here not because I'm on a budget or because it's close by, but to find items you can't get elsewhere. Frozen pizza from Germany, hot dog buns from France, Italian sorbet from Italy, etc. The best time to come is during Christmas (I think it's referred to "the holidays" in California despite being declared a federal holiday) where they have tons of "holiday" food from Europe you can't get elsewhere. No, Aldi is not going to hold your hand and wipe your fanny, but in my experience neither will Whole Foods (the worst for service and inconsiderate customers), Vons or Trader Joe's will either. Are people really that sad that you are parting with their sentimental quarter for 30 minutes? You will get the same quarter back if you return the cart. The location in my experience is the cleanest, has the friendliest employees and least sleazy/ inconsiderate customers of any Aldi I've been to across the country. I work in the industrial machinery business, I can tell you for a fact with factory line pictures on my iPhone to prove it many generics are the exact same thing as brand names with the same nutrition facts and ingredients. Only difference is the printing on the carton which you will throw away. read more

I can find some great deals here. Typically in the fresh fruits/veggie sections and in the packaged areas. I like to come and check out what deals are going on. Usually some other grocery stores have better deals so I won't buy too many items here. Some times when checking out, there is a long line, but associates are usually mindful and will ask for back up. I like their shopping cart system where you put a quarter in to unlock it and have to walk it back to put it away. Allows for a cleaner parking lot and less possibility for my car to be dinged by them. Can't tell you how many times I've gotten small dents/scratches from shopping carts! The checkers at this store are consistently mean and rude. The first time, I gave them the benefit of the doubt - who doesn't ever have a bad day, right? But they're just mean every time. Everyone here is very nice. They asked if I needed any help and were vary helpful. If you're complaining about the .25 for the cart you're ridiculous cause you get it back! They have items in weekly ads which all too often are out of stock. Not the managers fault; the warehouse sends inadequate quantities. I feel the advertised items are to pull people in and once there they will do all their shopping buying more expensive alternatives. This seems dishonest. Aldi's needs to make sure their stores are adequately stocked, especially on sales items which will attract more sales (place purchase limits if necessary). read more

If you are open to new concepts, lower prices, a variety of cheeses and cold cuts, imported cookies and candies and inexpensive kids toys, this is the store for you. You have to bring your own bag (like in all other grocery stores) and bag your own groceries on a specially designed table which some people might find frustrating because we are not used to it. Aldi is definately worth a visit to see if this is your kind of store. If not, go next door to the Dollar store (where you also have to bring your own bag). Enjoy the experience. read more

I'm shocked at the reviews about paying for shopping bags or bringing your own. That's everywhere now - it's a law; where have they been? Anyway, best vegetables in town at an unbelievably low price. Excellent cheese selection. Pizzas are great. I personally like almost all of their generics. They have fresh flowers, too. The check-out people are always friendly and if you need something you don't see, their workers are glad to help.
