I am a Costco girly for bulk, and shop at another local grocery store for regular items - but I just happened to be passing by Smart & Final on the way back from the beach. I knew they carried Waterloo, so I popped in. Good selection of items - felt like more things were "normal" sized than bulk? When I'd visited another location not too long ago, it seemed to be reversed. Prices were comparable to an 'average' store these days. After having dinner at Baja Fish next door, we walked over to Smart & Final to pick up a few items. This store looks older than the one in Laguna Hills. Fruit and vegetables aren't as fresh but they are decent. There was only one cashier in the whole store. It's pretty much the same as the LH store. Seldomly they would have two cashier's at the same time at the front cash register. They are one of the few grocery stores left that carries Florida Natural OJ. Ralph's hasn't had it for several years now and my husband likes that brand. Low in inventory but certain items they sell there are in bulk as wholesale warehouse. read more

I like coming here for produce and for some meats. I cook DIY meals for my floof ( with the help of mom) and the produce here is both reasonable and fresh. My mom really loves the people who work here. Everyone knows her by name and she truly loves walking to the registers and having pleasant conversations and laughs with the checkers. I used to drive all the way to El Toro rd from my home right off crown valley pkwy. When the crown valley Smart & Final store opened, I was so happy. I've been shopping there ever since. Things were tough during Covid, but S&F was there, friendly as could be, followed guidelines without complaining and I was comfortable going in there. The store is kept in great shape, clean and staffed with friendly people. A short time ago, my husband picked up a few things for me. His produce picking gene is a little wonky so I'm never sure what he'll drag home. Eggplant. He knows nothing from eggplant. S&F helped the guy out by having the best eggplant in my 7 decade life. I was so happy cooking and serving it to my guests. Kayla Brady was so professional and relatable when I spoke with her. I shop at certain high end food market near and prices are $$$$. Fruits and produce look perfect shape and taste are good. One day I heard from my friends that this place has great prices, so I started to shop here since this year. I found that I save at least 25-30% here. For example; Envy apple is ONLY $1.99. I used to pay at least $2.99-$3.29 a pound. Not perfect shape but the taste is exactly the same!! Lettuce is sometimes 2 for $3!!! I recommend to shop here in the morning because some produces sell fast and they don't restock right away. I still shop at other stores because they have unique products, therefore I now shop at this store 90% of the time. I am very happy with their prices. read more

Mischarged me. I bought a Dole Greener Selection salad mix that is clearly marked as reduced price for $2.47, but they charged me full price. This isn't the first time this has happened, and I should've checked the receipt before leaving the store, but ideally I really shouldn't have to double check my receipt before I leave the store to ensure I wasn't overcharged. I realized when I got home and I know it's not even a dollar but it's the principle. I specifically bought that salad because it was reduced price, and I've been mischarged for items here before so it's frustrating to see that it continues to happen. read more

I went there to buy my groceries and the cashier already scanned all my groceries already only to find out that unfortunately I left my card at home. I was so embarrassed and felt bad yet she made me feel better and said to not worry although I felt so bad. I should have checked my wallet first..lesson learned.. Anyways I told her that I would go back to pay for it since i live close and she really kept it for me. If the MANAGER or ANGIE the cashier is reading this. Just your average grocery store. Has mostly everything you need. They do have some pretty good deals from time so I check out the ads frequently. During the summer the avocados can get pretty cheap. Overall, the grocery store is pretty standard. Nothing stands out about it. Staff is helpful, as there are always someone around to ask questions about. Of the times I went, lines get no longer than three or four people which is a huge plus, since other stores can get pretty long around 5 or 6 pm. read more

Worst S&F experience at the crown valley location in Laguna Niguel. I have been a long time S&F customer but after today they have list me. I was washing my hands in the restroom and saw an employee exit a stall and leave without washing her hands.. I assumed maybe she's off then I saw he collecting carts in the parking lot touching every cart no gloves and they don't sanitize their carts for the customers. Once checking out I was asked if I want bags, I said yes please, the bagger proceeded to lick her fingers to grab the bag by the handles (where I would touch ) she did it again on the second bag as well. I don't feel that this store or company has their customer best interest top of mind. Since I have a CHOICE where to shop I will remain shopping at WF, TJ and Staters on La Paz which all lead with health and safety for their customers and associates. read more

Went back in and was told I was charged the higher price since I bought more than 4 bottles??? Not even 4 bottles at $8.88 and the others at $11.29 but the higher price for all bottles. Crazy right? Here they have a good selection of name brand products and we have been lucky here several times with great clearance items, especially on alcohol, half off retail making it the best deal around. Went this afternoon to get chicken for my dogs all of the packages were well sealed. When I was ready to pay for it the cashier KELLY was angry at me because I didn't put the chicken inside bag (there was no bags on the deli sección) she started to throwing up the packages because according to her they were dripping (again all of the packages were WELL sealed) she had a very bad actitud. To the point I decided to bag everything And I said to her let me do it I don't want you to get duty and she replied to me, she didn't want to get Salmonella which I replied you are telling Smart & Final sells contaminated chicken I grab my receipt and left. KELLY let me remind you you can wash your hands your are an adult and you should know that. You're being paid to so a JOB and you need to learn how to treat customers. During this whole covid19 quarantine we had to hit up a few different stores for essentials. This smart and final is out of our way but now we go here weekly simply because of THE STAFF and SERVICE. This is the worst grocery store in the area. Not only is it dirty and disorganized some of the employees do not pay attention as they check you out. I have twice been overcharged $30 because the are not paying attention or it's done intentionally. There are so many choices when it comes to buying food and the margins are small for food stores. The cashiers at this store are consistently friendly and super helpful and we've found the manager to also be very accommodating if a minor problem (e.g. unavailable product) occurs. The staff here makes us feel like they are all owners as they are always ready with ideas and helpful information delivered with a smile. The sushi is excellent and Karen, the owner is always ready with a suggestion and delicious food. We literally go out of our way to go there for her spicy tuna salad. As much as I have tried to like this store for it's convenient location to me I can't. Out of my short list of 10 items I couldn't find 7. Staff was friendly and tried to assist but items were not on stock. It's basic items like lactose free milk, walnuts, and coco powder as an example. Additionally, I know they stock large / family size items but they are also supposed to stock regular / small packages too. It seems that the shift is most on the larger size packaging. I encounter these two issues frequently. Lastly The store always appears disorganized and not as clean as a grocery store should be. This location has the cleanest location I have been to. The staff are very accommodating, and when ai have been there they usually open numerous checkout stands so there is not a wait. They have great deals ! I like seeing employees n repeat visits , that says a lot for the company/ especially staff like Jason that worked that location for a former grocery. The hours are good, and I love the fresh roasted chickens! You can't beat that deal anywhere , not even Costco and they are delicious & juicy !! The only thing I wish they had , is a butcher counter that you interact with, otherwise I admit they do have a very decent meat selection. Went to check out with 2 items, so I went to the 10 items or less checkout. Their was someone checking out that looked like it was for the month, the checkout was loaded with items, many more than 10. The cashier said nothing or offered no apology. So, I moved to the other lane, the only other one opened. Their was a lady checking out with 20 items or so, what I did not know was she was paying with food stamps and trying to use coupons, I am not familiar with that process, however the cashier rang her up quickly but then it became a game of add and subtract for 15 minutes. Finally the cashier who's line I was in called for another cashier, she must have been the lead cashier as she first came to the line to use keys to do something. She then opened another checkout lane but instead of taking me, next in line she took from the back of the line! 25 minutes later I checked out with my 2 items. This is a pretty cool little store, well managed, and they've done a diligent job of trying to keep up with COVID-19 developments to keep their customers safe and their employees safe. I give the manager credit for really working at doing this right and maintaining a good shopping environment at the same time. It's a balancing act that they have handled very well. I see some others haven't had the same experience and I can't comment on those or dispute them, I just know my experience has been good every time. We've seen that Americans all over aren't doing this very well, and it has polarized and upset many people to see others too conservative or too loosey in their minds. The produce is consistently good quality unlike too many other places and prices for it are competitive and sometimes those prices rock. I wish they would turn down the water jets over the lettuce which is a disease all supermarkets seem to have. [Put your head of soaked lettuce, water all through its nooks and crannies, into a plastic bag and bring it home, and it will be going bad in a couple days!] Meats are good too, and prices vary, but there are sweet deals almost every time. Wish they'd get the turkey parts more often, cut up and packaged like chicken, those are awesome. They cram a decent amount of stuff into small spaces in their stores. Selection is still not going to be what you find in a supersized market so don't expect it. Supplement your grocery shopping here and find an easy experience with good quality fresh food. read more

Just left and am disgusted. All customers were wearing masks. The two ladies at check stand 2 had masks "on" but neither of them had noses covered and I could see both of their mouths. What's the point in that? I called to ask the manager about their policy. The manager didn't pick up but a supervisor offered to help. I shared my experience and she literally said "sweetheart, it's hard to wear masks for 8 hours. Really????
